1:54 well Mr Driver instructor can't think any reason to do that hard breaking for recording purposes when you are tailgating and clearly everyone else behind you tailgating. Simply let the vehicle in front go as far as possible by smooth acceleration (rolling) up to the line rather you hard accelerate and braking nearly to a stop without stop sign for checking. Keeping proper safe distance from the onward vehicle apart all other benefits gives you perfect view in front of it especially on bends like that point you've make that huge error.
@Being_Jeff15 күн бұрын
Yes I thought that as well, that's the only way you can know for sure before you enter the box is that you have the distance of the box plus your vehicle length away from the vehicle you are following before you even reach the box. But people seem to love to drive to close to the vehicle in front 4 metres or even less.
@ConquerDriving15 күн бұрын
First: I wasn't tailgating Second: I didn't brake harshly. Third: you can see I held back on the shorter box junction before as an example. Fourth: this box junction is very long and you need to get to it to see where the end is, therefore you don't know how much to hold back until you're there. Fifth: holding back on long box junctions for the car in front to clear in flowing traffic will mean only one vehicle can pass the junction at a time causing significantly worse traffic. But more traffic is actually what many councils want to try and discourage car use and promote walking/cycling, but that's a video for another time.

I would handle it cautiously. Also if I'm taking a driving test in that area, I would do two things: - I will keep small commentaries between me and the driving examiner to let them know it's not hesitation. - I'll not accelerate and brake the last moment, but do a steady lookout. Doing this will keep the driver at your end trust you and your examiner will understand your decision, rather than assuming you made a grave mistake. On hindsight, who made that shit of a yellow box? They should be charged and bound to pay to the public who were fined earlier.

@@ConquerDriving It's all about anticipation mate. You not only need to be looking at the car in front, but also 2 or 3 cars in front of the car in front, see what they're doing. Just looking at the car in front leads to unexpected driving styles and habits such as what you demonstrated there, the white car in front of you was accelerating and didn't show signs of stopping (it would have been evident if its brake lights were showing), there's a high probability that you could have kept pace with the white car without violating the yellow box junction rules.

Another prime example is exiting Shepherds Bush Green to enter Holland Park Roundabout. In trying to do the right thing there recently I got stuck overhanging the box and received a fine. It's just too stressful!!
@diddydonk52554 күн бұрын
My defense for this is, in doing the right thing, Ur actually catching out the 95% of drivers who break even the most basic road laws and don't bother to read up on them. I mean come on let's be fair here, most drivers can't act innocent when most of u will break at least 1 law, regardless of it's severity, per day. Most people have become accustomed to breaking road laws that are imposed to stop people from breaking them for that exact reason. The lines arnt there for nothing and I'm not going against the fact that some lines on the road and even road signs are sometimes misinformative but drivers are rarely ever innocent. About 4 years back, I used to ride my bike to and from work each day. Due to the recent change of road laws allowing for cyclists to ride on roads via bike lanes via having the right equipment 1st to do so, I followed these road laws after getting annoyed at ignorant pedestrians who refused to budge even when I've done nothing to give them this attitude to me for simply cycling a bike. Within those 8 months, I got clipped on the road from a driver on a congested road who thought he'd get impatient and neglegant that I was there and nearly took me off balance, I then just 2 days later, got hit on the path with an even worse injury by a driver who bombed it out his driveway and didn't even bother to react or respond or even say sorry or any of that, so I rode to work in immense pain, I narrowly avoided a car collision the week after by half a second due to a morning drunk driver speeding down a down turning hill which crashed into an oncoming car and nearly hit me and slid into me when the collision happened. I only avoided that because I turned into the road to my work and I've seen near endless instances with my own eyes or just reading local news threads where people keep either dying or going to hospital from crashes or other related instances, while driving a car. I've even had people bomb it round sharp corners at 120mph, skidding their tires, speeding just because they want to or have sports/ race cars or high end vehicles. Some of those same people have died, most were under the influence of drugs, usually weed, or alcohol. The only 8 months I spent cycling, about 5 instances within a singluar month were close calls of me being involved in an accident and close to losing my life from people who don't follow simple road laws.

@diddydonk5255 In manchester, it is a bloody nightmare. I cycle everywhere, and I have near misses i'd say once a week. Only by being SUPER cautious and aware myself, do I avoid accidents with moronic drivers. 70% of drivers are not intelligent enough to drive. The police do fuck all about all the idiots in their golfs, behaving like wannabe f1 racers, bombing it down 20 roads at 60 just to stop at a red light. It's absolutely moronic and more often than not, these people cause 3-4 near misses with other traffic in the 30 seconds I see them, before they're gone. I agree. As long as we're not counting roundabouts. At 8:30am, if you don't go for it and block the roundabout for others (which we shouldn't do), then your road will be disconnected from the roundabout for 30mins+. This would essentially disable most of the main roads roads in a small town, as thousands of cars will que from many roads behind you because you will never get the option to go (there will always be a car to your right and none of them would que and travel all the way on that road, just to use that roundabout for a u-turn. This is the case for a roundabout on my road. From 7:30am to 9am, its obvious that our behaviour has to be adapted for the heavy traffic. In some places in london, you have to kind of force the person in the other lane to let you in (by making him/her change their speed), otherwise you won't be able to take your exit (which will come a mile later). You have to be ready to bail ofc and not be one of those pricks that force themselves in to merge. But if you behave according to the guidelines, you're not getting to work on time for the foreseeable future. This is the same idea of this video essentially.
@CharlesStawell14 күн бұрын
only exception i would make to this is level crossing across a train line or some similar safety orientated spot like roads going across airport runways etc.... (although these have barriers and red flashing lights anyway)- i don't personally have a problem with the yellow box as an escalated suggestion that i really should try to avoid causing congestion at this particular point. I just have issue with the camera enforcement on some junctions and not others - sort of catches people out. As you say, I treat every junction, every exit and entrance onto a roundabout etc... as a critical cross-roads where i should not fruitlessly stop in cross traffic's or potential cross traffic's way.

What concerns me as an ex-pat is when I come to visit my family, I pick up a rental car from the airport, to get around. If I incur a PCN of any sort (yes, even the private, 'unenforceable' parking charges), the rental company will pay it right away (so yay, discounted rate) and then deduct that amount from my credit card on file without any right of reply, and not without slapping on another £35 administration fee; a junk fee that the rental company just gets to keep and I am now out of pocket. By the time International visitors return home, there's not likely to be any chance at a sort of appeal, and the local council just get to extort locals and visitors, alike.

@billnye142 of course, but it puts visitors at a disadvantage. When Sainsbury's car park decides you overstayed your visit by 1 minute after spending £££a in their store, as a resident you have the option to not pay, appeal, and ring the local paper to resolve it. Visitors just get charged automatically as the rental companies admit fault on your behalf whether you like it or not. A scheme like automated fine cameras that don't consider the details is just going to take advantage of that. I prepaid for the Dartford Crossing and they screwed it up. 'Lost' my payment. I was charged a penalty plus currency conversion fees by Enterprise. I had to argue with the Dartford people and then the rental company to get reimbursed, and I only just had the mental bandwidth to do that.

In our crazy city, the situations mentioned in the video happen a lot. Well done for highlighting it. The biggest issue I can see is that the box junctions aren't able to manage the volume of traffic that we have today. There is a very notorious one in Hammersmith & Fulham (New Kings Road / Bagleys Lane) that generates over £1.8m a year for the council. Contrary to regulations it is full-width across a T-junction, plus the lights have clearly been phased so as to entrap drivers, plus the signage and layout mean that non-local drivers often find themselves in the wrong lane, so use the box junction to change lanes and steal your place.

Of course, because your vehicle is far too long to ever be confident that you will fully clear. It must also be hard to judge when you will fully clear because the back of the vehicle is way too far behind the cab. But only on one side of the road (the side you'd enter when turning right) and traffic is regularly blocked up turning right. Thanks for highlighting this. I always thought these box junctions are very counter productive and just hinder the flow of traffic and cause awkward scenarios. I used to work in for the local council dealing with parking offences and after I had swapped into a different role they merged with moving traffic offences and also started enforcing yellow box junctions and I asked one of the staff members still in that team at the time and he actually gave some very interesting advice. Apparently you can only be given a fine if you are STOPPED within the yellow box. So as long as you're still moving, even if you are crawling at less than 1mph, the fine would technically not be valid, as the fine (contravention code 31) is for 'Entering and STOPPING in a box junction when prohibited'. Not sure how well that actually holds up, but I feel if I ever find myself in that scenario in future and I get caught out not being able to leave the box because something in front of me changed, I will do exactly this and just slow down and crawl along super slowly closer and closer to the car that's blocking the exit until hopefully the traffic clears up and lets me leave. Ideally though, the enforcement of these box junctions needs to be abolished as it causes more harm than good. Most sensible drivers when they see a yellow box will know to try and keep it clear and will try to do so as reasonable as possible without causing issues for other road users. As you said it's unethical to punish drivers for a slight error in judgement or for not being able to predict how traffic in front of them will change while they are crossing the yellow box, as that can very easily happen.
@Nitrxgen14 күн бұрын
A family member of mine received a yellow box fine some years ago and was given a photograph of the vehicle. It was easily appealed on the basis that for some reason no video was provided to prove the vehicle was definitely stationary. Video proof to show the vehicle was stationary is a MUST. That being said, I 100% agree with you, if you enter a box junction and you very quickly learn you're stuck in there, you must crawl as slow as you can in hopes the vehicle in front will eventually move before you get to it. I drive for a living and ended up doing this a number of times and I've never received anything. In fact, I've never had a yellow box junction fine in my life so I must be doing something right for once.

I believe that qualified, but, apparently not! Which I am still mad about it. This box junction issue I feel is the same problem, the cameras are designed purposely not to give context or the extra footage as per why. Just, "You broke the regulations. Pay this fine. You can dispute this to us but we'll reject it, take it to the official board and we're not giving that discount." So dystopian, unfair and stupid regulations. It's disgusting. I think it's one of those the letter of the law versus the spirit of the law issues. If such an infraction were brought before a judge and the driver could demonstrate (through, say, dashcam footage) that they made all efforts to avoid blocking a junction (the idea of which is to deconflict crossing traffic), yet despite their best efforts, was prevented from doing so by external influences, then the judge would probably rule in favour of the driver. Although most drivers would just pay the fine, encouraging authorities to install more of these bloody cameras. Clearly if the authorities were that concerned about people blocking junctions, they would install traffic lights designed to prevent this from happening in the first place.

You also don't get much time to consider whether the green's been on for a while or not because the traffic light is very close to the exit of the test centre car park. Instructors in the local cafes tell horror stories of ill-fated students failing their test within 30 seconds.

Ones in London are insane. Most of them act as "keep clear" boxes that you're suppose to stop in if you're coming out from the junction, otherwise you literally cant move. I've also seen one 1 car length after a train crossing, and seeing as the crossing itself doesn't have a yellow box painted on it, I assume they want you to get hit by a train. And then places like Purley half are "keep clears" and the other half have cameras, it just makes it so dangerous as people that don't know aren't predictable or do something crazy to get out of the box.

"I've also seen one 1 car length after a train crossing, and seeing as the crossing itself doesn't have a yellow box painted on it" There's another example where there is exactly one car length and the crossing itself is boxed (Acton Central), and, worse, one where a junction and crossing are both boxed and the crossing stop line is _in_ the box, with no space between them.

Another case where it's safer to "bend" the rules is at some mini-roundabouts. We have one at a T junction where 99.9% of traffic going straight across, literally does go straight across, ignoring the mini roundabout. If there's a car waiting to join from the left, it can be really misleading if a car going straight through begins turning left in order to negotiate the mini rioundabout. Even though the car isn't signalling left, the waiting car could easily begin to pull out because its driver is so used to seeing 99% of through cars going straight through. (if that makes sense !)

I would probably argue that most mini roundabouts come under this, and I've been put at more risk while riding by going around the roundabouts than the rare times I've gone over them. I have 4 points to make here: 1) Years ago I read about research where (before enforcement cameras were ubiquitous) they enforced 11 box junctions with cameras and large signs. With 7 of them, it improved the traffic flow, but with 4, it decreased it so much that it had a negative effect on the experiment overall. 2) I watch a news article where a woman said that what she had to do was turn left, find somewhere to turn round, and then come back from that direction, rather than turn right. She showed what happened when she tried to turn right, ie, that when she had a green light, the exit was never clear, and when it turned back to red, more cars would always bock her exit again. Whilst demonstrating this, 2 girls in the car behind got so angry that they attacked the camera. 3) Once I was waiting to turn right in a box junction with a clear exit, but so many cars came up and turned to their left, then got stuck at temporary traffic lights round the corner, that my exit was no longer clear, but luckily, this was before all the cameras, and one can't turn right there, anymore, anyway. 4) Local instructors have told me that with one box junction, they've had examiners tell their pupils to enter the box junction when the exit isn't clear, and stop in it if necessary, otherwise they would be stuck for nearly an hour.

7:07 The legislation says the assessment point for stationary vehicles is before you enter. It makes no mention of accounting for moving vehicles that are ahead of you stopping after you've entered. 5:45 My understanding is that the legislation demands that the box covers the entire junction.

If I remember correctly, a local council in London was fined heavily for setting up a yellow box junction, just to trap drivers for the revenue. A roads engineer advised this to management and was told on an email to shut up or he would be in bother. The council needed money.

I have been fined for yellow box junction very recently. I had clear but got blocked after I entered. I appealed to the council, which they denied! I had to go to tribunal and the adjudicator agreed with me and cancelled the fine! My case was exactly the oversized one that was mentioned at 5:50!

with the traffic light control on roundabout that got longer/large yellow box, if you can see the 2nd lights ahead starts to change before you go through the 1st lights I would slow down and make sure if there is space or not to go through and stop on other side of yellow box. Yet from understanding the roundabout traffic light control, usually the entering roundabout lights will go red first then the lights on the roundabout go red after to let the next roundabout entering (on your left side where you passed the 1st exit) goes through. at 5:10 true you can't see the yellow box markings due to the blind crest or bridge bump what ever you called it, however there is the yellow and black stand with white dot signs that indicate where the end of the yellow box mark is which helps to show where the end of yellow box is just before you passed it on 5:19

Completely agree and long yellow box junctions have caught me out before now, though luckily with no fines arriving. Sometimes it feels like there is a good flow and of course you'll make the other side, only for a sudden slow and stop before getting there. Don't know how I've avoided these as a Londoner to date, but what has caught me out 3 times is the terribly sign posted school streets.

Yeah it's problematic. Recently I judged that the car in front would move beyond the edge of the box based on the movement on the cars ahead of it, but then as I moved to follow through, another car came out from the side taking the spot instead leaving me stranded in the box. Completely unavoidable.

Well they were all obviously too close together if they all had to pull up sharply 😂

Horns should be as loud inside the car as they are outside.
