A side note about the density of schools. There are so many päiväkotis in every neighborhood that your kid's best friends probably only live a couple hundred meters from you. So it's really easy for your kid and their friends to form strong friendships outside of school.

When I gave birth in Denmark 7 months ago I didn’t have to pay anything! All goes through taxes. I get about 600 bucks every three months for clothes for the baby too. 😄

In Finland you get 94,88/month for one child and if you have 2nd kids, they pay 104,84/month more etc.. Every month until the childs turn 18. So it`s like 20.000€ for one child in 17 years and 45.000€ for two kids.

Here in Italy giving birth, as every other health service, is free (there are some things that needs to be paid but totally affordable and it's in rare cases) for the one who uses the public services. Most of the times, the service is pretty good, my mom is an infant nurse and her department is good, but not Every time. There are also the private services but I don't really know how it works. Also, when you come home, you don't have any box or payment and also the maternity at home is most of the time unpaid and is so much shorter. This is a huge problem for my country because if you want a baby, 80% of the time you can loose your job or maintaining it but not being paid

Hello, great video! as a parent of 2 kids born in Finland I must agree that it is most likely the best place to have a kids worldwide and it is the main reason why we decided to settle here after my work assignment ends. I can share our experience - giving birth in Finland is absolutely fantastic, the attitude of the staff is amazing and very pro-mother oriented. We enjoyed 5 days in family room with our first born and it was amazing (costs 500 euro but it was like hotel, with bed and food for both of us). Neuvula services are great, but they are mainly for healthy children, they will not attend the kids which are sick. If you are living in smaller city, chances are that the medical center does not have a specific child doctor and it is completely overbooked. So I would highly recommend to get private medical insurance which costs around 400 euros a year per child (if you can afford it) it will pay off after 2-3 visits at private clinic and it such a relieving thing. In hospital you either get doctor appointment in few days or you can go to wait many hours in emergency room, which nobody wants with sick child and many times they would look on you like why did you even bother to come there, which I would agree, but many times you don't have much options if you don't have money for private clinic. Also in public medical centers they tend to avoid doing any checks whatsoever, usually recommending to wait and eat Burana. Private clinic will run happily blood test, urine test and etc.

Many have been wondering why there is a distinction between a birthing parent and a non-birthing parent and pointing out that isn't it always a woman. The thing is that there can be two parents where neither will give birth, such as adopting parents. The birthing parent obviously has a more challenging time and is given the pregnancy leave.

I don't know is the rule the same everywhere and anymore, but when my kids were in elementary school in 00's, they were not allowed to use a bike until they were third graders. This was a school rule. We live in Espoo where the traffic can be dangerous for a 7-8 year old, their observation abilities are not yet so good, they don't know the traffic rules and they are so small that drivers might not see them, especially if they move fast with their bikes. But yes, we let them walk to school on their own.

With my first child it was a little more complicated, because he was born a month early, and his lungs were not quite ready for the job. So he was kept in an oxygen-rich box for a week. But the bill was only a couple hundred marks. One Finnish mark was about 20-25 cents US at the time. So not an expensive thing.

My husband have recently been accepted into a Master's program at LUT University, and will have a type A resident permit but here's the issue: I am currently 18 weeks pregnant with TWIN baby. We are planning to move first week of July 2024 my due date in September. We're wondering if Kela will provide any support given this situation. We've heard from someone that Kela might not support her because she'll only arrive in Finland halfway through her pregnancy and might have to cover all expenses herself also wanted to know is there any insurance we can take that will cover the pregnancy cost.. Could you please advise us on what to do? Is there incentive care for pre mature baby in nue vola ? I'd greatly appreciate any assistance or information you can offer. Thank you.

Thank you for this video Aleksi, you provided some great info! I would like to add my little experience and that is that it works really well, IF everything is well with the pregnancy. I just don't understand why does one need to call neuvola in order to book a call with a nurse who then books an appointment with you/the couple. At the said appointment you are asked some basic questions and get told about the upcoming tests you need to do which is again, scheduled much much later than the time you first called. That is the only flaw in the system, all these calls and schedules take too much time and the pregnancy is only 9 months. Mind that the beginning might be hard and that is exactly when one needs the things to go a bit quicker. And getting to an actual doctor is very hard, a lot of work is done by the nurses. Other than that, I do find the system to be really good, taking as well that everything is free, the hospitals are really clean and so far, my local nurse is very kind. In Serbia it is as well free, if done at the state hospital. Private insurance and private clinics are a different story. The state also pays a huge amount of money for the baby and nowadays there are some baby boxes gifted as well, depending on the city/municipality. But there is a lot of place for an improvement! p.s. sorry for the long comment, this is a hot topic for me now 🙈

It costs 0 to give birth in Poland and to stay at the hospital but the quality of (health) care in Poland is very very low. I would never decide to give birth there. I'm very happy I managed to move to Finland, I'd rather have paid health care with good quality rather than have it for free and be treated like an animal...

Could you possibly do a video about foreign, single mothers/parents coming to Finland? For study or work, dating or not? Is the stereotypical introvert culture, plus fully learning Finnish (like spoken vs written), potentially too difficult for children trying to make new friends and adapt? Is there a cultural perception of single mothers which could make basic integration too high a mountain to socially climb?

Our bill in the end was around 250 euros because we had to stay in hospital for a few days. I think it is around 50e per day like you said. The care during the pregnancy was very good because my wife had pregnancy diabetes and all the relevant information and medications was provided to us free of any fees including insulin and sugar measuring equipment. Overall the whole process in very well taken care of. This makes you wonder why Finland has a birth rate problem.

The reality of the neuvola is quite different to what you describe here. During my pregnancy, I was sent to different neuvolas all over the city for every appointment due to lack of availability, and the appointments were often cancelled last-minute (when I was already on my way), resulting in a lot of stress and inconsistent care. This was really difficult for me due to having a disability, which was not taken into account at any point. Things did not go much better during the birth of my baby and I ended up with a separated pelvis and PTSD. I was unable to walk unassisted and had to beg for walking aids from the hospital because they didn't believe I cannot walk. After the baby is born, the neuvola stops caring about your wellbeing and you get only one postpartum appointment. It took 12 weeks to get a postpartum follow-up appointment, and they do not care if you are having difficulties. The only purpose is for them to fill out the Kela form, which is necessary to get the extended parental leave (no such requirement for fathers though... seems sexist if you ask me. Unless you mask the sexism by referring to mothers as "birthing parents"). When it comes to the baby's health, much of the advice is outdated or wrong. They have very limited knowledge of breastfeeding, for example. In my circle of mum friends, I would say about half only attend neuvola appointments because they are afraid of being reported to social services if they don't. I don't believe anymore that the neuvola is really about the wellbeing of mothers or baby, but a means of surveillance and control by the state. Just my observation.

We have 2020 and 2022 born kids and this doesn't sound correct. Except the appointments being with different nurse every and few last minute cancellations but this was due the exceptional time due to covid. But for last 12 months all our appointments have been with our regular nurse for both kids. We live in Helsinki. At least here with first baby breastfeeding expert came to our home and spent few hours helping with breastfeeding.

It is true that the Neuvula assistance is quite limited and it is mainly for regular checks, but we have quite good experience with them and they always tried to help us. For sure it is also tool for surveillance of child abuse or neglect. Main problem as with whole Finnish health care system is lack of resources.

Do not move to Finland. If you are a foreigner you will be taken advantage of. Or if you do move to Finland then don't ever work at public healthcare, the work culture is toxic and you will be paid low salary for it.
