I've had to live off dollar tree foods before. With only $25ish to my name every week for a few months, I had to choose between gas to get to work or eating. As I was just considering offing myself and saying fk it, I discovered dollar tree sold groceries. I'd go buy cans of soups, bread, lunch meat, potted meat, Vienna's and crackers and ration myself for the week ahead and put the rest in gas. It sucked, but I made do. Sometimes it's the little stuff that helps a person get through. Glad those days are gone.

I understand with you living in the desert and yes I realize poor people exist. At least around my area, the dollar stores are no cheaper and in some cases more expensive than Krogers.
The dollar store was a godsend during the panic buying of 2020. Most people went straight to the grocery store and didn't even know we had a dollar store around the corner from it. Never any lines to get in. And when there was a meat supply issue and prices rose, I decided to downgrade to sausages instead of beef/pork. The dollar store always had the cheaper price and better quality. The grocery store tried to compete by going ten cents lower than them, but I regretted that purchase. Didn't even taste like meat. All filler. Went back to buying the dollar store sausages which taste delicious & satisfying. Eventually the grocery store gave up competing and raised their prices 40%.

An ongoing issue I find as a merchandiser who works 2 DGs is that too often bc of lack of payroll there is more freight to be pushed than they can handle, esp if the store is small. Tho I agree with Tony, one thing the $1 aisle needs looked at closely. For example a $1 item at 15 oz. may be $1 but if you go look at the same item elsewhere in the store you are going to be paying 65 cents for that same item or it could be a couple cents higher but you are getting more say 17 oz.. It's the idea to the shopper of oh I'm only paying $1 dollar for this item when truly you are paying more because your not taking time to check it out. Old retail strategy. And that would go for everywhere. Just check before getting that gleam in your eye.

You have to figure in pay to factory workers, truck drivers to deliver, stockers to fill shelves and checkers to check you out into the cost of what you pay. It’s more complicated than you think. It all depends on what you get at the Dollar Tree and whether it's a better price or not. I got a box of cereal and priced it online at Target it would cost 4.49 (same size and brand) I occasionally find the Snyders over Hanover pretzels (unsalted because my husband has high blood pressure) at Dollar Tree elsewhere the same bag 3 dollars. Occasionally I find Nature Own or other name brand bread at Dollar Tree. When every store was depleted of a lot of canned goods and other non-perishable items such as flour, rice, beans, and even some perishable items like eggs, my local Dollar Tree had that. When most stores were depleted of toilet paper, paper towels, 8 oz of Germ X hand sanitizer, bleach (large gal of generic, or half gal of Clorox) as well as disinfectant, the local Dollar Trees down here in Orlando had it. I went to several Publix, Walmart, Target, Walgreens, and CVS and it was almost a month before they start getting supplies, but Dollar Tree had those items. They did limit the amount of course, but I was very surprised.

The real smart move they made was going small town. Lots of small communities are without a lot of "mom and pop" stores thanks to Walmart driving them out of business. But now dollar stores are moving into those small towns and filling a void that was left in walmarts wake. Its a win win as the local towns practically give the land or taxes away to get them to come to the area. @JimForeman4 жыл бұрын
I'm going to give you a lesson in basic economics. The whole system is based on inventory turnover. Most stores consider anything under five turns a year to be too low. I was an inventory management consultant for years and it's hard for most people to understand how a store can sell something at a loss and still make money on it. Most places which produce items make more than what the stores can sell rather than risk the loss if they run out before the season ends so they sell the surplus at a small loss to the dollar stores where people will buy it because of the low selling price. Take a loaf of bread that costs the store $1.00 and they sell it for $1.50, they have made 50 cents on their dollar. Do that every week for year, that dollar has made them $25 and they still have the original dollar. Spend a dollar on a can of beans which is priced at $2.00 and it sets on the shelf for eleven months before it sells and that dollar has made them only $1.00 in profit. However had they sold that can of beans after a month for $1.00 and they have the dollar which can be used to buy something that will sell.

Gary Palmer Dollar Tree has started selling more expensive items, such as name-brand cereals and hair sprays, some for up to $5 each. I think they know that their product lines will shrink with inflation and tariffs so they are adding other products in an attempt to fill up shelf space and also to make a profit. Those items really aren’t any cheaper than other stores.

I used to be a dollar store snob. But, I had to get party supplies for work at dollar tree. Then I noticed what they sold. I now shop at dollar stores over Walmart as much as I can. Not all items are cheaper. True. If you compare a bag of groceries between them, overall prices are cheaper. And many areas are grocery deserts. These stores are sometimes the only grocery stores they have access to.

This video claims that food at dollar stores isn't any worse than food at traditional grocery stores. However, they didn't mention that this is because the "food" coming from those "national brands" are riddled with carcinogenic preservatives, traces of glyphosphate, petroleum based dyes, Monsanto-engineered corn syrup and other refined sugars, and excessive sodium. The fact that the Dollar Store sells food you can get in regular grocery stores is less of a positive comment on the Dollar Store's merchandising and more of a face-consuming blemish on other grocery store brands that stock their shelves with this garbage that amounts to a eugenics campaign waged against the poor.

People are having smaller families these days so more are looking for products that won't spoil as well as smaller packaging that won't take up half of the space in cabinets. Vitamin pills are the most aggravating waste of space and garbage of all withm one inch of pills being packaged in four inch bottles!

Even the coffee filters arent good-too thick, a portion of water won’t strain thru and I repeatedly ended up with coffee trapped in filter. I saw on the news that at some dollar stores, there’s something wrong with the otc meds. I recommend looking into it b4 u purchase. The frozen fruit bars are $4. I was at grocer tonight, they were $4.65. (Only 60calories). 😃. Sliced Italian bread $2 loaf, always fresh. Ive never seen expired food. Most stuff in DG seasonal pure junk. Most of this stuff is produced at high volume factories by machines, when these machines reach the end of the batch than the quality won't be the same. Think of this as a McDonalds fry bin. If they scrape the last of the old fries out of the bin to fill your bag than those fries wont have the same quality as the new batch they dump in. Factories that proccess food go through the same proccess. The bottom bin scrapings also get canned and sold, those cans or bags which are lower quality are sold to discount stores.
