It make totally sense because in the 1960s French President Charles de Gaulle proposed a similar concept of a "third way or third path" : an alternative international alliance, relation or group of interest different from the USSR or the US. In terms of this outreach from France I think the Minister of International Affairs of South Africa has made a very important point. BRICS is in the process of formulating its own admission policies and goal documents. This is an important point as it will mean that BRICS can address issues of a multilateral nature such as rules for Observers , non members and so forth. They will address issues of expansion and whether the formation will remain in the form of developing country membership or also embrace others as Observers like the OECD has done while retaining control. I think these are important issues to keep in mind as once again it seems the request from France is already generating unnecessary speculation as France has not declared its intent. This is unfortunate as it already is intentionally or not sowing seeds of distrust and potential division amongst us from the developing world particularly from Africa. We are reacting prematurely. Whatever decision the leaders take will be viewed with suspicion as conclusions will have already been drawn either way. Sometimes we need to have confidence in our leaders and respect the fact that they also need the space to consult and arrive at conclusions without being confronted with unfounded conclusions based on our, yes admittedly painful, experiences.

My opinion on the issue of France joining BRICS is a "NO!" Any organisation must have a criteria for qualification; and I believe France need to be disqualified. BRICS is dedicated to the upliftment of 3rd world countries because the rise of Russia and China has presented an opportunity to better advance our poor & coloured brothers; if China has not progressed as greatly as she did, our 3rd world brothers will have to remain poor. The well known writer, Albato Moravia one said, "TO BE RICH YOU MUST HAVE MANY POOR!" If everybody had a million dollars equally each then "who can be called "rich?" France and all the members of the G7 have to be disqualified. How can we admit USA if they had applied to join BRICS? The fact that France is trying to go through South Afrika to get into Bricks makes it seem like it's a desperate bid to continue their grasp on colonial designs.
