I am currently in Nice which I adore. A beautiful city and with the most polite and helpful people anywhere. At a restaurant today a very loud American shouted 'Garçon'. Every customer's head looked up in disgust as did mine. If only that person watched your very informative videos on language and culture. Merci à vous.

I think I will start using 'rapid restoration' in English - it's something I need quite often!

Merci beaucoup. We use the word "ambiance" in English, so I think most people (at least the native English speakers) got this with no problem.

5:10 We say "ambiance" in English. It's the same word with the same meaning.

Very good video! Although.. what do I do when I try to practice my beginner French and they refuse then tell me to just speak in English?

7:00 I've never seen ankle-length aprons before. When I did a web search on "French waiter," I saw that it must be fairly common. Are all French waiters so dapper and well-groomed?

atypical - can happen in some more formal places.

There needs to be a happy medium between the service in France, where the waiters ignore you for long periods and the US, where the wait staff constantly hover and ask if you need anything mid-bite.

The comment that you can get tap water for free surprises me. I was told by the waiter that it was illegal to have tap water, and I'd had to pay for mineral water. It was in St Malo.

Asking for tap water is seen as being cheap or mean especially in a chic place and they know you are a foreigner. Asking for a glass of tap water so as to take your prescribed pill(s) is never refused.

Yes but tourist place should be a bit different. It is like saying. We don't want money. Go to supermarket and buy there. Also on that note. The very late hours of eating are deleterious for health. Hence many Chemist shops around. .... This summer visited France. Was surprised by size of some few French ladies. The obicity tide is getting even to France. I was disappointed with many far too sweet cakes.

Ahhhh! Je suis vraiment dècu que les serveurs ne sont pas mes amis! Ma seule raison de voyager en france est de me faire des amis avec les serveurs. Je vais annuler mon voyage maintenant. (Yet another really stupid comment from her.)
