The funny thing is that it's name in Japanese does mean frog. カエル is the normal noun form of the word for frog, while ガエル is the adjective form to describe which kind of frog someone is referring to. Toad is ヒキガエル. The only reason why they changed the other form for the word is like the "Vampiric Koala" example, they just wanted to separate cards even though the words are talking about the same animal. If they made an actual toad archetype, it was be really awkward for the TCG, since we've already made lots of cards with the word "toad" in them that wouldn't exist in the OCG.

French translation fact: In french its like "except Frog the jam and include treeborn frog", because frog in french is "grenouille", and the treeborn frog name is "rainette". So after a long time it was renamed "grenouille d'arbre" We have the same problem with traptrix cards and the cards with "trap" in their name

The main thing I think letting Frog the Jam be a Frog monster is opening up some Normal Monster support for the deck. Unexpected Dai to summon a free Frog from the deck turn 1 can get some fun plays going, and there's two or three different spells that Monster Reborn specifically Normal Monsters. They can be a great reusable material for extra deck summons if you have the space, and I wonder if Frogs having access to _a certain Rank 2 Extra Deck monster_ made looping Frog the Jam actually kind of a threat.

There's a similar case with this obscure guardian support card that went to the trouble to exclude a bunch of cards but didn't exclude all the guardian cards outside the guardian archetype. You can search out guardian sphinx with it.

You could, since its Japanese name contained Guardian (ガーディアン) Excluded cards in the English TCG were (iirc): --Celtic Guardian-- _Elf Swordsman_ --Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress #1-- _Fortress-Protecting Winged Dragon_ --Winged Dragon... #2-- _Wyvern_ --Guardian of the Labyrinth-- _Watchman of the Underworld_ --The Reliable Guardian-- _Tanomoshiki Shugosha_ Notably, "Guardian" has not seen support since Arsenal Summoner.

The whole "Frog the Jam" thing is pretty illogical. If they had just not included the "except 'Frog the Jam'" text in the english translation of the frogs, it would have made no difference, there's no crazy combos this normal monster enables. But they added that text in the translations *specifically* to keep the cards the same between the English and Japanese translations... Meanwhile, they were perpetuating much larger differences such as the separate OCG and TCG banlists, release delays in the west, and TCG-exclusive archetypes. It's clear that these much larger differences don't matter to them, so why not just let Frog the Jam be a frog?

While TCG and OCG have different na lists I think letting Frog the Jam be a Frog in the TCG is still a bit much because it creates plays that would be Illegal in the OCG. It’s the little bit of consistency between the two that’s allowed to exist 🤷‍♂️

This reminds me of how originally in the TCG nothing on the cards or in the rulebooks told you that ritual monsters couldn't be special summoned from the graveyard unless successfully ritual summoned first. You had to know japanese or get irate when someone called a judge over about it and you were told that yes, that is the rule, despite the only way to know that beforehand being to read either obscure early-internet sites or to know Japanese.

Frog the jam was actually devastating because it was a normal monster, not only was it easy to pull out with frogs in theory. Then it would turn around and synergize with cards that require a normal monster, cards that on the surface are you know kind of a mute point, to fasting bargain and other things coming to mind. However other cards that required normal monsters in the Decker other things could also pull out frog the jam frog the jam was kind of easy to pull out. The main advantage of course was the cards that required you diffusion Simon normal monsters cards that necessarily didn't specifically help frogs but in reality they help the archetype greatly. This would also continue into synchros and XYZ where there are certain normal monsters or anything. Remember that there were other cards that were normal monsters easy to pull out that really did just become a high demand card Gene warped war wolf is a great example of this It's a level 4 monster with 2000 attack that was slightly easy to pull out and had just enough tack to be threatening however the main thing was that it was easy to pull out and it was the right attribute as well as being a normal monster. frog the jam being a water type is even easier to pull out, being a normal type is super easy to pull out, and being level two is easier to pull out than a level 4 because there's more support for low-level cards not only that but then there's also support for low level normal cards then you factor in the frog name. So Konami actually had to make sure that frog the jam wasn't used, because the towed frog archetype becomes a lot more consistent with frog the jam . If you don't believe me, That's fine, however you could just go on to dualist Network and give it a shot. You might be surprised if you do your research on looking into things that require normal cards things that require water types and everything and things that require low levels that there is a great overlap of cards that can use frogs a jam that would have synergized with all the frog cards had it not been for konami's intervention.

Why didn't they just let Frog the Jam be part of the Frog Archetype? Dark Magician is not part of the "Magician" Archetype in the OCG, but Konami's NA division in charge of the TCG not only said that TCG tournament organizers can do it, they said that in Konami events in NA it does apply. I mean not that it matters since current Magician support is for Pendulum Monsters and Dark Magician clearly is not a Magician Pendulum monster. I get they don't want the TCG to be different than the original, but no one is going to use Frog the Jam.

Another "Frog the Jam" moment that irritates me to no end is how Red Eyes B. Chick was always given the same exclusion clause from future Red Eyes support until it's name was changed to Black Dragon's Chick in the same OTS pack. While Frog the Jam's archetype name was just a funny coincidence that was never meant to be, Red Eyes B. Chick's exclusion never made any sense because, for all intents and purposes, it was supposed to be a member of the Red Eyes family from the get-go. It's effect is to literally tribute itself so you can special summon a big Red Eyes from your hand. Furthermore, like Frog the Jam, it could never break the archetype if it was allowed to be an official member by name. So why, Konami? Why did you banish this poor baby into the Shadow Realm? Why can't you let Red Eyes have custody over his oldest son? What do you gain from this?
