Popular games like Hollow Knight and Death's Door just didn't do it for me. We Happy Few and Scarlet Nexus looked good, but quickly put me off. With so many games to choose from on subscription services like Xbox GamePass and PlayStation Plus, how long do you give a game to impress you before you move on to something else?
Since You Asked is a new series where I answer all kinds of gaming questions asked by the community. These videos are edited by Isla (Ghost McGonads), my self-appointed publicist who has also somehow gained access to my KZbin channel.

Game pass is a bit of a conundrum in that respect. I know I try some games and ditch them too quickly. But on the other hand I have paid for games and been very disappointed or been unable to progress far enough in to them! So it is all a bit of a lottery and I prefer the chance to play before / without parting with lots of money! I will stick with Game Pass for sure.

Had a similar experience with Aragami 2, co-op games are always something I'm willing to give a chance. When I started playing though it had rough controls & instant fail stealth which is a big no for me. If I'd bought the game I would've pumped a few extra hours from trying with friends now that I had a general idea of gameplay, but since I didn't buy it I just uninstalled & moved on to more enjoyable games.

It's going to be interesting how games are structured in the first few hrs going forward. Gamepass acts almost like a demo machine for me and if I'm not invested in the first hour or two, it's uninstalled. This isn't the case when I buy a game, it gets a good few more hours on top of that to hook me.

Raji is a decent example of a game I probably would have bought, but I tried on game pass instead and uninstalled as soon as I lost interest. Really interesting setting, but I couldn't get on with.... I can't even remember what about it I didn't like!

Have you ever played anything you thought was going to be really popular but then no one else seemed to know or be fussed about it? I know you've had the opposite where you thought it was meh but loads of people loved it.

When you play a game with a character creator, what's your logic / inspiration when you're making a character? Do they ever look like you, are they supposed to be super cool looking, or are they goofy joke characters?

I really like roguelikes, so for me it takes usually the very first run/death to know if I like the game. Roguelikes are special though, because you purposefully are very underpowered your first time, and never deep into the progression. I didn't like Hades' art style at first, but the combat was good and *eventually* that's what made me stay. I think the most common thread with games I try is my first death; playing games for so long I can feel out an 'enjoyable death' and if doesn't feel good to lose, it wont feel good to win.

I'm not such a big fan of roguelikes in general, but your philosophy makes sense. I guess I tend to give them 2 or 3 runs to see how the core mechanics look like they're going to expand, which is also plenty of time to get a feel for how fun it is.

I kinda thought you were a bit quick to give up on something, but then I realised if I can't see myself finishing a game, I don't usually even start it. Lmao
