Because if you watch them in order then in number 3 you already know anakin is Luke's father, so when the I am your father part comes later the audience already knows.

I believe that's the order to watch them. And I'm a 44 year old who grew up with the originals. I used to argue with a work colleague who used to say you have to watch 4 5 6 first otherwise Vader's reveal in empire is meaningless but I disagree. We as the audience already know but we also know that Luke doesn't know so when he reveals it it's like watching a soap opera where some guy is cheating on his wife, we know, but she doesn't and when it's revealed to her by some guy we are like "oh no he didn't!!!". It still works.

Alright, I'll explain the *best* order to watch 1-6 in: First, you start with episode 1. Episode 1 helps set up the universe Star Wars takes place in and introduces us to characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. (If you really want to, you could skip this movie as it doesn't really "set up" any of the other movies.) Then, you move on to episode 4. Now you are somewhat familiar with the world and some of the characters. You notice things like Skywalker being mentioned over and over and you hear Obi-Wan say that Vader killed him. After that, you go to episode 2. You see the Jedi in their prime. Anakin and Obi-Wan are fighting together in the Clone Wars just like Obi-Wan said in episode 4. In this movie, you also get to see Count Dooku. To make the hint that Anakin becomes Vader a little more surprising, episode 2 can serve to mislead the viewer into thinking Dooku is the one who becomes Vader. At this point, all we know about Vader is that he killed Anakin Skywalker, and in the movie he does defeat him pretty easily. Both Vader and Dooku are tall, have british accents and dress all in black. This is, of course, only for someone who hasn't already seen episode 5 before, or heard anything about Star Wars. You then move on to episode 5. The reveal that Vader is actually Anakin is much better with the support of episode 2. Partly because it gives more of a setup with Anakin slaughtering the sand-people, giving the twist more ground and making it more believeable, and partly because the viewer has been mislead into thinking Dooku is the one who becomes Vader. Next is episode 3. Now that you know Anakin is Vader, you get to see how he ended up that way. But mostly, episode 3 is just a great way to set up episode 6. Episode 3 also "reveals" (although it's obvious) that Palpatine is actually the Emperor. Finally, you watch episode 6. After seeing the tragic fall of Anakin Skywalker, you sympathise a lot more with him and you're now as convinced as Luke that he can be saved. The reveal that Luke and Leia are siblings doesn't really come as a twist, but it was never a strong point in the movie in the first place, so it doesn't suffer much. The reason you jump back and forth between the trilogies is because it fits with Lucas' idea of the trilogies "rhyming" with each other. Even though they have (mostly) different characters and is set in a different time period, they tell basically the same story of an orphan boy on a desert planet learning to become a Jedi. The biggest difference is the ending where Anakin chooses the dark side and Luke chooses the light side. Both of them had a choice to make, and each picked different options. A similar thing happens with Palpatine. In episode 3, the Jedi come in and try to arrest/kill him, but he manages to beat them, partly because of the help from Anakin/Vader. In episode 6, another Jedi, Luke, comes in and tries to kill him, but now Anakin/Vader is on the Jedi's side and helps Luke kill Palpatine. The trilogy-"hopping" also gives a really nice juxtaposition. There is already a juxtaposition in both the prequels and the original trilogy with episode 4-6 being set in a much darker time in the galaxy, while generally being more lighthearted in its tone. 1-3 isn't set in such a dark time (except for the end of episode 3) but its tone is generally a lot darker and a lot of the themes are much grittier. Going back and forth between these two juxtapositions gives another layer of it that makes the movies a lot more enjoyable.

He actually had good reason for selling it and he's explained them in many interviews. But if you don't want to look it up the main 2 reasons are 1. for the fans. Lucasfilm wasn't making much money under him and he had like 2000 employees to think about so selling the company was the best way to let all the employees keep their jobs. On the audio commentary George Lucas said he was forced by the studio to deleted Episode 4 A New Hope from the original 1977 release. Not that anyone, but me, watched the audio commentary Now I like the prequels, even when it seems Padme falls for her stalker way too fast. Funny thing, George had a cowriter for the weakest prequel: Episode 2 Attack of the Clones. Maybe we should blame Jonathan Hales for the rushed romance 🤣 Watch order? The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, The Clone Wars, Revenge of the Sith, Solo, Rebels, Rogue One, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens & then The Last Jedi (my least favorite, but I still like it). If you only got a day or two, reluctantly cut out The Clone Wars & Rebels (or watch a few selected arcs).

Even though episode 1 gets overly sidetracked with the lengthy race, it completely explains why Darth Vader became the man he did. He had a traumatic childhood, followed by a traumatic teenage-hood, that would probably make anyone predisposed to frustration and violence. He turned out like Jesse James. In that sense, Episode 1 is critical to the entire chain of movies.

Harbinger 7 I will admit played it VERY safe. But it was the start of a new trilogy, freshly owned by Disney and the first movie since the prequels. There was a lot of eye rolls for similarities to the OT, but it was a starting point for character development for the new group of heroes. There was literally no development in any of the characters in Last Jedi. Not including positions of power, each character mentally is still where they were when they started 8.

Jakub Grzybek Only on the list for the Jango/Clone scenes and the Geonosis fight. Sucks we couldn't get more live action time in that period of Star Wars. The TV series never did it for me...the Clone Wars was a FUCKED UP time in the galaxy. If Disney actually gets their shit together and is smarter with their movies, it would be sweet if they did a Republic Commando type film. Newbie here ! Just watched all of the movies last week and loved them. I watched them in traditional order from 4-6 1-3 7-8 rogue one, solo. Personally, I feel the chronological order is the best order for the Star Wars movies to be in. Watching the OT gives you that wanting more to know what could’ve possibly happened all those years ago that made obi- wan and Vader the way they were. I feel that this desire to know more caused by the OT is part of the reason the prequels are great. The OT seems to me at least, more story driven while the prequels are good at world building and giving backgrounds, which is my favorite thing from a series. They both have their strengths but I feel the best way to watch is in chronological order

Real explanation is very simple: he didn't know it was episode four. It's so obvious there was no continuation plan for the series - the ending made it seem like all of the bad guys could have easily just been declared dead, there was definitely no concept of Luke being Vader's son, the Emperor wasn't seen until The Empire Strikes Back. It probably wasn't until years if not a decade after Return Of The Jedi that they came up with the prequel idea.

When my daughter is old enough to watch with me, we will be watching in release order. Otherwise it kills the huge Vader reveal
@ShamanMcLamie4 жыл бұрын
I managed to surprise my niece with Anakin becoming Vader in Episode 3. She didn't really notice Palpatine calling Anakin Vader(probably didn't help I talked during that moment). Then when that mask comes on her reaction was priceless. I have video of it on my channel. Another reason to show her Episode Order first is it makes Vader's turn around at the end of Return of the Jedi way more impactful. I remember hearing a story from a guy whose younger sister saw the Prequels and The Clone Wars first and Anakin was her hero. So seeing Anakin turn back to the light meant a lot to her. Not only that she got really excited when Hayden Christensens force ghost appeared at the end. Episode Order also deals with certain issues a lot of older fans had watching it in release order. For example it seems really weird that Darth Vader built C-3PO. These characters are arbitrarily brought together, but in Episode Order Anakin just happen to be a kid who built C-3PO. He later becomes Vader and the maker is separated from his creation. You have a similar siuation with Yoda. A lot of fans think fighting Yoda is inconsistent with his character in Episode V, but this is a younger and earlier Yoda who isn't as experienced. When Yoda says "Wars not make one great." He says that because he fought in a War and he sure as hell didn't feel great when it was over. Yoda's whole speech on relying on the force is so important because in Episode II the Jedi fear they are losing their strength in the force and adopt the Clone Army to help them win. The scene where Obi wan goes to Kamino is actually meant to mirror Luke going to Dagobah. Suffice to say the Jedi lost faith in the force and the Clone Army meant to replace it destroyed them. It's why Yoda stresses the force being the Jedi's ultimate ally to Luke.
@bigdoubleu1173 жыл бұрын
@@ShamanMcLamie Legend. I hate when Prequel haters say Yoda in the Prequels is character assassination, "cause Yoda is wise and doesn't need a lightsaber." Meanwhile, it's because of his experience from the warring Prequels to why he's so wise and reliant on the Force. Also as explained in the OT, Lightsabers are the weapons of a Jedi, Ben Kenobi tells Luke to find the Jedi Yoda. Yoda + Jedi = Lightsaber. Plus these people seem to forget the film story telling of Character Development.

You really can't watch it 1-6 unless you want the whole "I am your father" part ruined. I was hoping, back when they were making ROTS, that they would find a way to "kill off" Anakin and introduce Vader without showing that they were the same person. That would have at least somewhat preserved the "WOW" factor of "I am your father!"
@greedokenobi38555 жыл бұрын
prvtcaboose And that’s why I always suggest the order they were made. Just start with 4,5,6, then 1,2,3, etc etc. That’s the way to get the expercience most Star Wars fans had that were there since the 70’s. I love that the prequals went back into time and showed the backstory. Same principle has been done (somewhat) in the Godfathere triology where we get flashbackss of Vito’s life. That’s different since it’s just scenes instead of a movie but sort of simular still. I pretty much feel that ‘77 Star Wars (A New Hope as it’s called now) is the perfect introduction to it all.

So I've been trying to find out as much about the George Lucas outlines as I could and it seems like the grumpy Luke Skywalker in self imposed exile was part of his original outlines. Although not all his students were killed. Another important difference is that Luke was suppose to be introduced early in Episode 7. The first part of the movie was the proto-Rey named Kira searching for Luke and finding him. Then the rest of the movie would be her convincing him to return to the fight and help save the galaxy. Basically he'd start being his old self again by the end of the movie and going on adventures with Kira for the rest of the Trilogy which he would die at the end of Episode 9. This actually falls somewhat in line with what Gary Kurtz describes as the original plan for Star Wars. Originally Episode 6 was suppose to be a much darker movie with Luke turning to the dark side and the rebels losing at Endor. Leia wasn't Luke's sister. Luke's friends would seek out Luke's sister who would then bring him back to the light and then Luke would train her to be a Jedi with a final battle against the Emperor at the end. This obviously changed as George Lucas got burnt out on Star Wars, wasn't sure he'd make more movies and wanted it to end on a high note. When I think of the Lucas outlines in comparison to the actually Sequel Trilogy a lot of it made it's way into the Sequel Trilogy. The issue is non of it is properly set up. These moments are ad hocked in with non of the context to make them work properly. The search for Luke Skywalker in TFA is basically the first act of GL's Episode 7 stretched over a movie so Luke doesn't steal the limelight from the new characters and gives Abrams time to rehash the Original Trilogy. Episode 8 not having a time skip makes way more sense. Rian Johnson is attempting to continue the story of the Lucas outlines. The big issue is he doesn't spend nearly enough time developing Luke as a character and the movie gets way too sidetracked by a useless B plot and frustrating C plot and then they decide to kill Luke Skywalker off dashing hopes of seeing further adventures with him. Now compare how the audience reaction of what could have been and what was. In George Lucas's Sequel Trilogy fans see dour old man Luke. It is probably jarring as hell at first, but because Episode 7 establishes it early there is time to develop it. Not only that , but devote time to him having a turn around. Luke is alive at the end of 7 with two movies to see more adventures with him and to see him form a relationship with and train Kira fulfilling his promise to Yoda to pass on what he has learned. Finally ending his journey with his death at the end of Episode 9. That send off possibly being way more impactful. The Rey Skywalker moment might be a relic of the Lucas outlines and it would make way more sense when Kira and Luke spend the whole trilogy together for her to take up the Skywalker name. With The Force Awakens we spend the whole movie looking for Luke Skywalker while also getting side tracked by Starkiller. We finally get to Luke, but it's a cocktease the movie is over. We spend two years fantasizing about what Luke would do and speculating why he is on that island. Then Episode 8 comes out and drops it on us after all this hype has built up that Luke is just there to die. He stays that way the whole movie, has a heel turn at the end to only end up dying never to be used again. Yeah I can understand why fans were pissed. They lengthened the least important part which was finding Luke, made us wait 2 years for Luke and then give us the most jarring part of this story at the get go. Then they condensed what is probably one of the most crucial and important parts of this story. So Luke's turnaround at the end doesn't feel genuine and Rey's force abilities continue to feel unearned. What's worse is we can't see Luke develop more because he's been killed off. The Sequel Trilogy manages to drag things out and rush things at the same time.

I saw the OT/Luke Skywalker Trilogy on VHS as both original and updated special editions. I purchased both trilogies on Blu-ray/DVD special sets. I watch them in chronological order (1 to 6). I do the same with the Underworld saga when I watch them (Lycans first and than first Underworld).

Yeah right, Disney said they would honor him and they lied to him!
