IDK why people expected the re-unification of Germany to not still have issues only 30 years afterwards. The US civil war still had significant impact after 100 years and the south was only seperated for around 4 years, even if the feeling of seperation was felt long before that. Edit: I’m also aware that the reconstruction was incredibly awful in the US which probably helped the divide stay much stronger for much longer

Neither Germany nor Italy are real countries. Not trying to be a dick but unlike the US who has had a quarter of a millennium to grow and a relatively homogeneous culture during our colonization of the continent both Germany and Italy are frankensteins stitched together by political idealists from peoples who vaguely identify with labels like "Italian" or "German" but would've more likely identified as Neapolitans or Bavarians. So you have these idealized nation-states, that in some cases don't even share the same dialect or political consensus,. being held together by inertia and the geopolitical interests of other nations and not because they would be together organically.

@@aname6794 No because we were all cast in the same mold that is the New World, we're not clones but we're a lot closer together than say a Venetian and a Sicilian; unless you have a handle on history it's hard to really even digest the staggering levels of cultural divide present just one backyard away in Europe. I don't doubt that say a thousand or two thousand years from now, assuming the internet were to go down, that significant cultural divides would present themselves in a continent as vast as ours, but as of now we just haven't had the time to diverge. It really was a magic moment of several flavors of Euros coming together and more or less ceding their previous identities to assimilate into an entirely new civilization, we probably won't see anything like it again until we colonize space.

@@theeccentrictripper3863 firtsly we didn't ask, secondly more than 150 years passed from the unification of Italy(and there were a lot of unification movements long before), it's more than enough to obtain a national identity, also if you were to ask to enyone herenin italy what their nationality is they would all say that they are italian(without counting south tirol maybe). There are diffrences between North and South Italy thats for sure but that means nothing, it's like saying therenare big diffrences between Florida' and Los Angeles' people. Also, wtf does it mean that Italy and Germany(or every other country) isn't a country? A country is real if it has a population, a territory, a government and it's recognized by other states, all things that Italy has.

Sounded like East Germany needed protectionist policy to keep their businesses safe. One of the best things for a new or weak country to do, is to implement protectionist policy to build up their native and local industries, so that they can punch above their weight level when they participate in foreign markets. This is what both the US and China did.

I think Tommy is oversimplified the political aspects of West Germany not investing enough in East Germany, West Germany was having a economic boom before reunification and that went away after unification, this made West Germans as far as I understand, view East Germany as a liability and a waste of resources. If you were a politician from West Germany that wanted to invest in East Germany, you might run the risk of being put out of office if you were too agressive, and could be replaced by someone who doesn't want to invest in East Germany at all. Sure most politicians are lazy at best but public opinion has a significant impact on what politicians try to do. Immigration is a good example.

This. It was a dire situation. Any alternative would also have immense consequences on the people in East Germany. Extremely difficult for politicians to handle such situation. Of course it will take more decades to further close the gap to west Germany.

This is very true. Unfortunately, many people in Germany don't believe in it and irrationally think of a "Nazi" resurgence when one makes an attempt in that direction. It left the whole country in a state where politicians could sell out the country for short gains and maintain power in the long run. A feeling of patriotism is needed as basis off which every political decision can be derived. It unites people in the country and foreigners who want to live in that country. If this basis is not built the country remains to be just a weak shell.
