Why God Of War Beat Out Red Dead Redemption 2 for Game Of The Year | Red Dead Redemption 2 Review

The game awards just recently happened and the winner of Game of the year is God Of War, Sony's big PS4 Exclusive title that released earlier this year. Many believed that Red Dead Redemption 2 either was for sure going to win or should have won. In todays video I want to discuss why I believe Red Dead Redemption 2 didn't win and why God Of War did. Whether you agree or disagree I hope at the very least you enjoyed the video. I was very happy to see God Of War win Game of the year and do believe it is completely deserving of it. I feel I could make this video since I have spent a ton of time playing both games and have beaten both games. Red Dead Redemption 2 is still an amazing game that does so much right and better than 99% of games but for me it was missing something crucial. For those wondering I do still plan on doing game reviews ( yes including PS4 game reviews as well) but it does take me some time to finish games these days. I prefer to really play as much of a game as I can and do almost everything there is to do before giving a review on it. In a wayh both deserved it and both were tied in the competition God of war won because it has a pace and a story easier to follow. While RDR2 takes you to the reality of 1899, the end of the cowboy ers. It takes you to a time, where people lived at much lower paced. Where the small things mattered even more. Where a day would consist of hunting and campingx to t he n go the next day and sale the pelt and meat of the animal and keep some. When farmers spend the day foung homest work. And where outlaws were a rare breed and some where trying to change. You need to allow yourself to get swept by its pace and enjoy all the simple things that made that era so great. Just camping, riding your horse, hunting and meeting folk in the wirlderness, visiting different towns. Its a world that breaths. God of war lacks all of that, but thats the thing GOD of war is a more intimate story about a father and his son, taking the ashes of their love on to that final resting place. Thin is is easier to sympathize with such a intimate story about family over a story over the changing times of the west. Thst is why GOW won. because its easier to get into. But in terms of sheer world complexity, lore and depth, rdr2 wins. Its just not a game for people who want instant gratification.

RDR 2 is just a slow game where you are pulled incredibly slow into the story , god of war as far as I can understand it is opposed of RDR 2 . both games are amazing still the gameplay in RDR 2 is frustrating sometimes . God of war is a game that only has action as far as I could follow , fast action it is a drug trip the opposed of RDR 2 that is more a relax game with less fast action just relax , slow game to have a relax time no sick actions , action and action , RDR is pure relax , slow tempo story , you come into the story very, very slowly sometimes some action and a bigger world .

Red Dead Redemption 2's greatest strengths are its world, story, and characters, and its sackful of rewards reflects that well. @@dakotalucas5279 story , graphics , details, characters( atreus is anoying but still a great character) kratos voice acting and details on face, movment of characters, fight scenes, boss fights , secrets, level design( my eng is bad so im sorry for mistakes), Emotion this game shows, father-son story and my f god baldur final boss is one of the best in the series, its game of the year. My f god the music is breathtaking, uprgrades, abilities, weapons, armor ubgrades, side misions , side bosses, the ps4 trophy sistem is amazing in this game. Mechanic of moving and fighting are 11/10 the camera angle is always perfect, it newer cuts and the game fells like a long cutscene. Did i menton the story and characters, I did and I will mention it again. A fucking masterpiece 11/10.

Gear story and characters, voice acting and Combat feels weighty Gow is under R2 in terms of looks, the Mythologi is wrong, the Combat is hack and slash, the gods are wrong. R2 made as good Combat as they ever could. Gow Combat could have been far more complex, fast and hard. It was just hack and slash. Just look at Kingdom come and Mordhau, far better weapons but its the same stuff. Swords, shields, axes and such.

God of War was a HUGE risk compared to Red Dead. Cory mentioned that Resident Evil 4 was his BIG motivation for this change seeing how RE4 saved the series or downfall but the success of RE4 saved RE franchise financially. Dad of Boi did it like how RE4 and it paid off BIG time. Dad of Boi is a true gamble compare to Red Dead 2 which was already a success even before release (They didn't even need to advertise the game much.) Not to mention despite having more games, GoW is more niche compare to Red Dead Redemption.

You see, Code Veronica, REmake and Zero did not do well financially thanks to Capcom's "brilliant" console exclusive deal and the oversaturated of their old style at the time (these are not bad games, they are damn good) that cost them a lot of money w/o getting anything good in return. RE4's sale. however, exceeded expectation that helped save the series financially and it was very different compare to older RE game.

Production and story is HUGE! Both games are awesome in this way. It's just a matter of what kind of game you like. God of War is a great game... but it got boring to me because it wasn't open world. There's nothing wrong with that. When I put in Red Dead 2... I was just amazed by all the things I could do and explore, and I spent hours upon hours JUST MESSING AROUND before I ever started wanting to progress in the story. I just loved how it immersed me into its beautiful world. To me, it blows God of War away. As someone who played dozens of hours of RDR2, who is in absolute love with this game, I totally understand you. The average game of this genre as way better controls than this one, I am talking specifically on the aim controls, there is a slight delay on the movement control, but generally it was ok by me tbh. I play on free aim, and god, it just doesn't feel good, I mean, for a game on this caliber to be doing a huge mistake like this, it's just frustrating and disappointing as hell, even with looking on setting guides it still feels completely unnatural, I couldn't entirely get used to it, even on the very last mission I felt it, and it felt like that sequence could not be experienced to its fullest potentiall. In spite of this rant, rdr2 is still a masterpiece in my book, it does so many things right, things that I just didn't see before in a video game, that it simply makes you wonder, how the hell did r* came up with that control scheme, goddamn...

@@juliusaguirre1398 Don't trick me as if I've never played soulsborne games :P No there's nothing alike, you don't have that much combo attacks or adventurous puzzle solving in soulsborne games, for combat aspect the monster hunter games will be more alike to soulsborne, the combat pace is much faster in GoW compared to soulsborne games. "old hunters" know that soulsborne games can be played like turn-based rpg if you timing it right, in GOW depends on difficulties you can play like an invincible god spaming your R1 R2 around or play like a god damn ninja dodging/blocking every attack or you die. Neither of these are like soulsborne games.

I noticed the sluggish controls instantly, and wen i mentioned it on other videos i got blasted for it!! The controls are bad for me, everytime i play iam constantly fighting with the controller! BUUUUUT, since i bought the forest and subnautica for ps4, ive not touched red dead 2, so that sez something about the game for me. As for god of war winning goty, it was hugely deserved! I cant recall any bugs or issues, it is a perfect game!

God of war had a way better story, graphics, music, combat characters imo. When I played red dead, it got boring and was slow asf, the horse riding is annoying ngl. God of war won for a reason. Kratos is a great character, one of the best in video game history, but Arthur Morgan IS the best video game character. I never felt burnt out with GOW I wanted to do everything I could possibly do and learn every little thing, however with rdr2 at some points I just didnt feel like doing the uninteresting side quest, they mostly felt like a chore and I found myself quickly trying to complete everything to get to the main missions

While I agree that GoW deserved the award, the video just seemed to overly trash RDR2. I feel a better approach would be to compare and contrast what both games did well and highlight where GoW outshined RDR2. 20 minutes focusing on all the stuff you don’t like about Red Dead seemed excessive and I found myself struggling to keep watching. But, I suppose it is the internet and everything is supposed be negative.

I couldn't agree more! I was so excited when I started playing the game. The world and setting just felt so "1899". Then I quickly realized the controls also feel like they were made in 1899. I love RDR2 for the story, setting, characters and actors. The world is breathtaking! But getting around the world is a chore. I like the controls for GTA5 better than the controls for RDR2 and there's no good excuse for that. I didn't expect to like God Of War that much, but I really did! I still like RDR2 better and if it's not my favorite game of all time it's at least my favorite game right now. But that is after I made peace with all the bad that comes with this game. Maybe the story would've been better presented as a a TV show or something. To be honest, the controls feel broken and gameplay get pretty repetitive, even though there's lots of things to do. Everything apart from gameplay is perfect. It's the worst perfect game I've ever played. I love it so much, but how you spend around 8 years on a game just to get everything to perfection except for the actual gameplay, is beyond me. That being said, I fucking love RDR2. It is amazing. Outlaws for life!

It set out to achieve more than GoW did, and it's the bigger game with more content, so of course it's going to be easy to critique. What matters is that it succeeded, both story-wise and open-world wise. But if there's ever been a pattern, it's that Triple-A PS Exclusives (for some reason) are always more likely to win the award.

In RDR2 i just felt like they put a whole lot of stuff in just for the sake of making it bigger, not necessarily better. I mean, doing the 'chores' in God of War had a purpose. You grow stronger and fight stronger enemies. In RDR2, all your progress goes to waste after the main story. The camp, all of Arthur's stats which you spend the whole game leveling up, everything.

Naman Agarwal Red dead Redemption 2 is a game very much based on the story. You may feel like everything feels like a chore because do the slow pacing but for me the slow pacing is good because during those slower moments you get to talk to the other characters and learn more about them. Also I don’t believe that there were filler stuff as you were talking about, every mission has its purpose and it’s usually to advance the story unless it is one of the optional missions in which case is always optional and not necessary. For me I can relate to the guy you replied to because God of war felt like a bunch of chords to me, fighting the same characters with no personality and just spamming rb, and not to mention the very annoying puzzles that took place throughout the game. Also what is the point of growing stronger once you have beat the game, personally I just finished the main story and I don’t feel inclined to play anymore of the game due to how boring the gameplay is, it’s usually just block, dodge spamming square or rb. And although the gameplay is good it’s very simple and boring and doesn’t make up for it by exceeding in any other departments. I believe RDR2 is centrally based around the dynamic world and story. So the gameplay isn’t top priority but even then the gameplay is decent enough and the story very much makes up for it. And if you don’t want to lose all your Arthur progress just save right before you beat the game so you can continue to play as him.

The side missions and random events and animals you can hunt could take you weeks or a month to accomplish all of them. And the honor system is always optional. If you want the good ending you be a good person. But it’s not necessary. You can spend the money on guns, clothing horses, food, haircuts and tons of other stuff.

RDR1’s shooting mechanics were so smooth. The movement was a bit wonky in that game but the cover aspect and aiming aspects were better than they were in RDR2. It annoys me how you stay ADS for a little even after you let go of the left trigger.

1. Rdr2 gave you a mechanic to go into scenematics while riding a horse, so you have time to digest the story, think, and even rest a little. It even adds a bit of excitement when there's an enemy encounter and you'll have to react. And if you are not for it, unlock fast travel, go set up camp and skip most of it. 2. Rdr2 controls make sense because they shoot for realism, and that's as real as we gonna get if we are controlling a real person with a controller. Aiming and movement takes time, and Rockstar knew some player prefers stuff to be less realistic or just don't want to develop the skills, that's why deadeye was implemented. 3. The epilogue is relatively short since it basically covers ALL the informations, maybe unnecessary but you still might want to know, for the transition from rdr2 to rdr1. You could totally skip the epilogue if you want. Rockstar purposely made it so that their world doesn't allow the player to explore further unless you let the story(history) continues, so it really feels like you are playing as a person in history from a different reality, which also means Arthur' destiny does not exist beyond West Elizabeth in their worlds timeline. Moreover, Arthur's story happened and ended just the way it would if one's an outlaw, REALISTIC. 4. Rdr2 online was a different format than story mode, so comparing that to GOW was just unfair

Finally someone understands! I’ve only played through a few hours of RDR2 through a rental, but in general I tend to stay away from Rockstar games because they all feel so sluggish and clunky. Every time I’ve brought this up to my friends they look at me with faces of disapproval. I think to date I haven’t completed a game from them for this sole reason, and it’s a shame since they’re fantastic storytellers and world builders. Anyways fantastic video as usual, and keep up the great work.

There are dozens of games like this that I massively appreciate, but do not play because of too much grinding. This is why I play modes such as Titanfall Frontier modes and Gears of War Horde matches almost exclusively with friends...I hate slow grinding. I have a student who spends hours grinding away to build or increase something I rather grind in a stimulating way such as destroying enemies, but this is just me today. I think the last two games I would spend literally 100s of hours grinding on is Oblivion and Skyrim and this is a long time ago. I have fond memories of these experiences, but will not do them again.

I agree with you 100%. I didn't even finish RDR2. The game was beautiful and for me the story was ok, but I never felt like I couldn't wait to get to the next part. With GOW I had way too many late nights because I didn't want to put down the controller. The game drew you in way more than RDR2. At least for me it did. But that's the great thing about video games. You get to play what you like and don't have to play the ones you don't.

👍 I love Red Dead 2 and I thought it should have been game of the year, but your right. Early on in the game I thought to my self the shooting kinda sucks. Both games are great and now I see God of War deserved Game of the Year. Great video.

I totally know what you mean. I bought the game and played the first chapter only and felt I didn't like the way the game felt as well (I'm stopping the video and responding to commentary only up to about 6:00). It took me going back in August of 2021 and replaying it from the beginning. I do understand what you are saying. You need to open up fast travel and have some money-- you have to enjoy the hunting aspect since that is the engine that stocks supplies and pocket change. Once you have built in some of the quality of life aspects of the game and leveled up the dead eye, it can be great.
