A wave of upcoming hypercars claim to accelerate 0 to 60 mph in as little as 1.7 seconds. However, nothing has been verified. The reality is that no production car has ever managed an official 0 to 60 time of under 2 seconds. There's a reason for that. We break down how current technology has created that limit, and what could be done to break it.

The thing that annoyed me most is that he said there's a supercomputer in EVs. There isn't, it's just a normal computer, not much more powerful than your smartphone, if at all. A supercomputer is one designed around getting the absolute most processing power, regardless of space or cooling requirements, and often take up entire rooms and many many server racks. They are designed to run simulations and crunch numbers a human could never dream of calculating. There have been computers in cars for decades.
@xboxGTbenton1234
@xboxGTbenton1234 2 жыл бұрын
Look up the hardware that powers the self driving (Which is what was referred to in this video) in a Tesla. It's definitely more powerful than a smartphone. Supercomputer is technically an improper term as it is generally used to describe main frames but for a car, I'd say that any self driving computer is impressively powerful for the amount of power it consumes.
@Mr.Patchy
@Mr.Patchy 2 жыл бұрын
@@xboxGTbenton1234 It's still just a mobile CPU with a mobile GPU, effectively a laptop. Yes, stronger than your smartphone, but by far not a supercomputer. You could go to your local computer store and pick up the same hardware for like 900-1100 bucks, probably stronger. You pointed out a super computer is a mainframe, yes. Mainframes are still computers on Steroids designed to compute much larger projects than a tesla could ever dream of, my point still stands.

There is a flaw in the original formula calculation IMO. The front tires on almost all product tires are smaller than the rear tires. While breaking the majority of the weight is shifted to the front tires. During acceleration it fades to the rear, larger tires where the majority of the powered is consumed (even in AWD cars).
@nateflatt7418
@nateflatt7418 2 жыл бұрын
They referred to a C7 for the brake distance. That car uses 4 tires to stop and 2 to go.
@whysoslow1999
@whysoslow1999 2 жыл бұрын
There's also the fact that the brake bias in road cars is often very far forward for safety reasons(avoiding mid corner oversteer if touching the brake). Optimizing brake bias for braking performance like you'd do in a racecar, you can get a good 10% extra braking from the rears and that's gonna give you a better answer for peak AWD acceleration

It does, one of the reasons that slicks make more grip then normal street tires is more tire touching ground
@NNFaNRacing
@NNFaNRacing 3 жыл бұрын
For rubber tires more surface area or a larger contact patch creates more total grip. This really only applies to rubber because the coefficient of friction of a tire is inversely proportional to the pressure on the tires. So for a given compound a larger contact patch decreases the pressure pushing on the tire, for most everything else though with a static coefficient of friction, surface area doesn't matter.
@NNFaNRacing
@NNFaNRacing 3 жыл бұрын
The biggest difference between race tires and street tires is the compound though, so i'm sure you could cut tread into a slick and it will still have more grip than a street tire with the same grip, the problem is the tire won't last nearly as long.

Well look, Matt or carwow drag raced the Rimac CTwo on ordinary pavement. and got the best time of 2.08 sec corrected, which is 2.28 uncorrected. Which is right where it was predicted on a pretty ordinary old unprepped surface. So it might be possible on a glue prepared dragstrip, maybe also with rollout correction, but not on regular roads.

@ThatMetalheadguy666
@ThatMetalheadguy666 3 жыл бұрын
@@amateurapple I agree with your statement, however you have to remember that adding AWD components to any vehicle that's RWD stock will add weight. Yes the carbon fibre panels and other components made out of carbon fibre will reduce the initial weight compared to stock steel/aluminium ones. However, more power would also be needed to compensate for the awd system. I would assume (I'm not an expert or anything on the demon's engine) the engine would be easily able to be tuned for more power. Just imagine a Dodge Demon that has Carbon Fibre body panels, only had 2 seats, an AWD system like Audi's quattro system and 1000 BHP. That would definitely make 0-60MPH under 2 seconds. Well at least in theory.
@amateurapple
@amateurapple 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThatMetalheadguy666 Actually the truth is 840HP is more than enough. You'll never see a Demon putting out all 840HP on the track at launch, which is why they always screw up the launch. The HP is just too much for two wheels to handle. But you got a point with the weight stuff
@ThatMetalheadguy666
@ThatMetalheadguy666 3 жыл бұрын
@@amateurapple Yeah that's probably true and yeah. At the end of the day, no matter how much power you have, or what materials your vehicle is made out of. If you can't put the power down to the surface, you just simply can't achieve the best time that's possible for that given vehicle (That's if you're going for drag racing/ 0-60 times for example). Unfortunately the limitations in the current technology of tyres, wheels, surface prep etc is the reason why we can't achieve better results, well for now at least. Who knows what the technology will be like in 20 years from now, right?

Tesla's fastest car has a 'Drag Strip Mode' that lets you go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under 2 seconds - but the set-up process takes 15 minutes. The Model S Plaid can accelerate from 0 to 60 in under 2 seconds, but it requires a set-up process.

I believe even with the 15 minute setup process, they needed to start the timer after the first foot of travel so that's not 0 to 60, but a little more than 0 to 60 in 1.99 seconds.
