Iona, you forgot something. Wash the grip to keep them clean. I generally play 5 times a week. After those 5 rounds, I wash the grips and clubs. Washing the grips frequently keeps them tacky and makes them last longer. I did use Golf Pride CP2 grips but switched to Winn oversize Dritrac 2.0. Soft grip, tacky, and more shock absorbing ( good for your wrists). I use a Golf Pride Revers Taper putter grip. Best putter grip on the market, imho. Fwiw, i'm 73 and currently play off a 9 handicap. And don't use a glove.

I thought it was time to change my putter's grip but my club golf pro said "the grip is perfectly ok just give it a wash and a scrub to get rid of the sweat and dirt that dried up on the grip and turned a but greesy and slippery in hand when putting"

@@modeif871 Putter grips are a different compound to standard grips. Best way to clean them so they don't get a bit slippery after soap and water, is to use rubbing alcohol.

It’s worth considering the weight of the grips if anyone is making a DIY change. Simon at Precision Golf guided me during a wedge fitting (great experience with great results) towards the midsize Golf Pride Tour Velvets with ~four extra wraps under the bottom hand instead of the midsize MCC Plus4s I’d installed myself. The MCC Plus4s are heavier with extra rubber and so threw the swing weight (~balance) of the club off, which the simpler Tour Velvets with tape don’t. Great video Iona!

I recently moved to a midsize plus 4 from standard and it’s made such a huge improvement to my consistency. The thicker grip and smaller taper really helps me control the club face, reduced the shots going left and allowed me to loosen the grip pressure leading to a staggering 2 club increase in length. I’ve been playing 10 years, I wish I had done this when I first started!

Great video Iona, last season changed my iron grips but then found my clubs felt 'strange' then realised my new grips were heavier by about 6 grams. So it effectively changed the swing weight and feel of the club. Just a word of warning to everyone, to be careful when changing. Maybe Simon could confirm my information was accurate.

Great info. I struggled with putting for years. As a taller guy the standard putter had me leaning over too much and never comfortable. went to a long putter but never got comfortable, so i added 3 inches to my old putter and found my comfort zone putting. Also agree with grips being VERY important. As a person with bigger hands I went to jumbos on all my clubs and love it for grip pressure and comfort.

Love this Iona. I’ve been back at a Baseball grip for 10yrs since I first started working with Rick Shiels. He put me into that grip in our first full swing lesson together. Regarding the club grip, I’m experimenting at the moment. I’ve gone to a Golf Pride Tour Velvet Midsize, with the exact same concept as you’re doing. I want to feel the grip thicker in my lower hand, to take the wrists out of it - I’ve casted badly for years, and that grip thickness I’ve had much more success with in the last 8 months or so. Also, I’ve found I’m not gripping the club has hard with the thicker grip, so the tension has gone which is helping me swing with more freedom. Brill vlog - love it!

Great video. I’ve been in and out of playing golf since I was 12… just back after 15 years. Had my first lesson yesterday and the first thing my instead was “I looked at your hands, then your grips when you 1st walked in” before I’d hit a ball he knew I needed bigger grips. He let me hit a 7 iron with a jumbo grip on it, WOW! The feeling was so different, after the first few shot to get used to it… it felt like that’s just how a club should feel in my hands. It’s a game changer for me already.

I also use a baseball grip. I recently switched to a less-tapered grip (lamkin st+2 hybrid), and it's been a huge game-changer. The thicker bottom adds so much comfort, control, and stability when using a baseball grip because your right hand naturally extends farther down the club where it would normally be very thin on a traditionally tapered grip. My older grips would wear quickly due to slippage and having to grip tighter. The less tapered grips quiet the hands more and activates the larger muscle groups, which promotes consistency and reduces pain. I'm sure a less-tapered grip can be beneficial to many grip styles, but I've found it essential when using a baseball grip!

I play the MCC +4 grips in the midsize. My golf glove is a Large Cadet. So, I have pretty average size hands and even maybe shorter than average fingers. But the oversized bottom hand really helps me have light grip pressure and relaxes the muscles in my hands and forearms, which then helps me to have a good turn in the back swing while staying "connected" through the down swing. This change and really chasing the result of lighter grip pressure and staying loose has helped me bring my handicap from 15.9 when I started playing golf a year ago down to a 3.7 after my round this past Saturday. You know how you hit a bad shot and then you decide to hit another one for fun because you know the result doesn't matter and then the result is great? For me, the biggest reason that happens is because of tension. In my body and in my mind. And dang near every golfer on the planet does NOT play better when they get frustrated. They put more pressure on every shot and their body gets tight. Finding ways to relax on the course was the code to unlocking my game and it all started with my grips. Thanks, Iona, for making a video dedicated to this!

Hi Iona, VERY interesting video, thanks. I have a few points/queries: 1. I was fitted for irons at Precision Golf a few months ago! 2. We settled on standard grips with two extra layers of tape all the way down, so not changing the taper. Maybe I should change my driver and fairway wood too. 3. Your new baseball grip moves your right hand further down the grip to a narrower section, so thickening this section compensates for that. 4. I think you said in an earlier video that your wedges have thicker grips. I got fitted for wedges before going to Precision Golf, and at that other place they put midsize grips on them. I must admit I quite like them. What are your thoughts on that now? All the best.

I got fitted for my current irons at Titleist in Scotland almost ten years ago now. At the time the fitting was all about loft, lie and length, there was no real mention of grip size or tape layers, just really the question of what style of grip I fancied. It would be interesting to see if standard club fitting has evolved as much as the sport has. The grips are certainly something I'll be asking about when I go back to get fitted for a new set soon. There is so much more technical information available to club golfers now, especially with videos like this one so readily available. Thanks for the informative video Iona, Much appreciated👍

Golf Beginners here.. My Mizuno HM 923’s came with Lamkin ST hybrid +2 in standard size. They felt good for about 8 weeks. But after feeling my dads midsize Lamkins i noticed these felt better! I was'nt choking the life out of them! Especially in my bottom right hand. And so, i went to the small local golf shop. Who measured my hands. And told me; you're deff a midsize. We took my PW, 9i and 7i and put on 3 different midsize grips (GP MCC +4, GP CPX and a Lamkin. Took those 3 clubs to the range, and started to hit some balls. 10 each club and then switch to the next. The tapered Lamkin was the first to get eliminated. Then there was the CPX and MCC +4 left. With the MCC having less taper over the CPX, (with the CPX already having less taper over the lamkin) that felt great. But i loved the way the CPX's sticked to my glove. So, eventually i went with the CPX's with a 2nd layer of tape on the bottom half of the grip. Fact: the thicker and more sticky grips give me more control. Balls hit are deff flying more towards aimed target!! I let them put the CPX's on the biggest part of the bag, driver down to PW. For my wedges (GW, 54 and 58) i went with the slightly bigger oversize Winn Dri-tec Wrap grips.

Really interesting. I badly broke my left index finger and had to change from Vardon to interlocking and to Jumbos throughout the set, it worked and means I can still play. Also new grips is a lot cheaper than new clubs! Another great video, thank you.

I bought new ping irons and after a few games found that every now and again they’d twist at impact . The pro had a look and set it up with 2 layers at the top and added 4 layers at the bottom just to take a little bit of the taper off. So far has worked a treat 👍

I use the golf pride MCC +4's because I noticed the same thing as you mentioned, taking the taper out a bit. However, I have them through my whole set. I saw the most benefit on my wedges and scoring clubs, as I tend to choke down on those more often. It made a huge difference. However, After watching that same John Daly comment and Martin Borgmeier's Jumbo Max grip fitting, I am considering trying at least the mid-size version of the MCC +4 now.

Used a standard grip on all my clubs for 20 years because it’s what I thought was optimal.. recently changed to jumbomax medium ultralites and it has completely changed my game. My misses are more controlled and I even tho the grips are much larger I actually feel like I have better touch. Take that for what it’s worth. Great video Iona

I played with Jumbo grips when I was younger. The feel was great , then. But as I aged, I lost some feel in my shots. So, I went back to standard grips. Never thought about adding tape to my grips, though I knew some people were doing that. Thanks for the video. I need to get more comfortable and talk to a pro.

Irons - I broke my wrist too - left for me. When I came back, I kept with standard grips, but I was 4 layers under the left/upper hand, and 6 under right. (And I was also using JPX 800 Pros with graphite shafts but Iron weight heads) . Then I found Golf Pride MCC+4 Standard (and I use the Align too), which lets you lose some of the layers, preserving swing weight AND had less taper than a standard grip. After much experimentation, I ended up with 2 layers underneath on my current set. 0 layers - too much flip 1 layer - hands got more fatigued at end of round, rather than actually feeling too small. 2 layers - perfect, a solid grip. Really noticed it on driver and 4i, less so on the shorter. 3 layers - not enough release, a little numb Flip to "midsize" - nope, too big And the thing that everyone forgets about new grips. It's not just about the tack. Fresh rubber feels softer too, which matters if you are trying to reduce impact shock. So I will be changing earlier next year - one season, not two, even though they weren't that worn. Beware the align with certain adjustable cams, if you move the adjustments. Some 2 piece rotate the shaft when changed, 3 piece tend not to do this. I also find the ridge from the align harsher than the softer main part of the grip. If your wrists are sensitive, that might make a difference. Putter - many experiments. I used a "two thumb" at one point, installed sideways to get a flat surface, to put my lead hand against. One thing I learned was to try the new grips at different putt lengths. Taking the wrists out too much hurts long putts. And I'm currently back to a standard Strokelab. It hangs well, works with my new shoulder controlled putt, and has a little release on the really long ones. And the standard sizing lets me overlap with double fingers, which I do from time to time.

Thanks for that Iona great informative video I’ve always had stock grips on my driver and irons but my putter grip has been changed to sit and feel fantastic in my hands you’ve got me thinking about looking into having an in depth exercise into getting my iron grips sorted to feel like my putter does in my hands I have one question for you nothing to do with grips but I’ve seen loads of your chasing the red videos and I’ve always wondered why you don’t use a stand bag I see you carrying wherever you are playing but cringe every time you bend down for your bag after a shot or to change your iron of choice why is that ? ❤

According to the giant billboard - sized ad on the side of my local driving range building, new grips add two yards! I just added an extra tape wrap on my Cobra LSDx 3 wood grip, and it alone makes me feel like I have better control. May be all in my head, but I still feel far more confident with it now. I like the slightly thicker feel.

I have big hands and have found midsize grips with an extra layer of tape at the top and three at the bottom really help. Conversely have a skinny grip on my putter. Also have struggled in the past with golf gloves getting the right size. Best I’ve found is a Claw Glove, super grippy and don’t get baggy

Just been fitted to change my full bag. We briefly discussed grips and I've gone for two layers of tape. My driver needed the shaft to be adjusted which has thrown out the brand sign in the grip. I played with the new driver for the first time today and having the brand sign off to the side has really thrown me! I'm going to get it changed to a 360 degree grip so i can't see the writing. Visually it's just really thrown me.

Interesting video. I wonder how many club fitters are experienced enough to advise on grip size since hardly anyone talks about grip fittings! I switched to a baseball grip a few years ago too and will never go back. I'm struggling with the tip of the little finger being compressed against the ring finger on the right hand. The tip section joint on the little finger is painful and swollen after a round. I actively try and work on grip pressure but not sure if its a combination of size and pressure that is causing it. I use standard size Golf pride CP2 Pro grips. Would love to know your thoughts on this issue...thx

Great video! Love them all. I have been re-gripping clubs for a long time, so I can experiment freely without having to have the pro shop do them. I use the air installation method on my own so it makes it easy to try different grips and build ups. I wear x/l cadet gloves so my hands are large. I have found that jumbo grips work the best for me. It helps with my irons, especially the short irons. It gives me a better feel in that it keeps the hands out of the swing. I pull those shots far less often, Also I feel that I can lighten my grip because of the bigger circumference of the grip. Also has helped with my arthritic hands since I've gotten older. Please keep up the great videos. I love the European course videos. Grips do make a difference!

Changing grips can also make a big difference in swing weight. I need oversize grips. But it made my irons feel too light. I eventually found jumbo Winn grips that weigh the same as a standard grip so the SW stays the same. I recommend if you change your grips really compare the weights of the grips as well.

Like you I have smaller hands, as I wear a Cadet Medium golf glove. In the past I played the standard Tour Velvet 360, but last year switched to the Golf Pride Tour Velvet Plus 4 grip for all of my clubs but my driver, and it made a significant difference in my strike location and ball flight. On my driver I still play the Tour Velvet 360 but added 3 additional layers in the bottom half of the grip to reduce the taper. I really like the feel and control I have........no big snap hooks due to an overactive right hand!

I found Std grips always felt way to small and lacked control if you will. I have used Mid Size for years and that made a huge improvement. Recently after watching Bryson talk about grips I have put a jumbo on my driver with the intention of changing other clubs I struggle with if this change helps. I have also considered adding more wraps to the lower half of the grip as a test. I will bookmark this video and let you know how I do. Thanks Iona I love what you do. I changed to midsize grips from standard as I found I used too much wrist rotation with standard grips. The thicker grip helps me keep my wrists less active during my swing. However on my putter I prefer a standard style pistol midsize grip over the thicker wider grips around. Don’t feel the head as much which means I can’t be consistent with each putter stroke. Good video Iona 👍

Iona. As many have said here. Try the Golf Pride CP2 Wrap. It already has the built up lower section so you don't have to add tape. Additional it reduces vibration so is easier on the wrists. I use midsize. In terms of size, I don't think I've yet met a single golfer that had the correct size grips. Virtually everyone I see uses the ridiculously skinny standard grips from 60 years ago. It really is a bewildering aspect of the sport.
