You were not allowed to install another service provider and if you tried, that new provider declined saying they weren't authorized to service your community. I guess it's supposed to parse out the territory equitably but it should ALWAYS be the consumers choice as they will always choose the provider that balances between reliability and cost. Yeah, I know. They make it seem like there will actually be change, but it's exactly what happened in 2013. The FTC silently let google off the hook after fierce lobbying. Democracy as a concept isn't actually quite that great at voicing the opinions of the people. It's just better than anything else we have, which is just sad at this point. The EU regulates its lobbying, which means big companies can't flex their muscles there, but when the same rules are introduced in the us, companies - you guessed it, lobby against it.
@@thepocketlion6470 I don't think you understand. Lobbying means money in the pockets for politicians/political parties. Keeping in mind lobbying is how politicians continue their careers after leaving office. The end goal is to get Google to "donate" to them or face regulation, fair or not. Keep in mind Microsoft didn't even spend money for lobbying until congress started meddling with their business. Do you really think it was about Netscape? If you think about it, nearly everyone is using Google's services, and most of the time, for free even. So I think it is just fair that they earn something out of their creation. Or are you saying someone else should earn out of Google's hard work? Also, I believe Bing and Yahoo hasn't kicked the bucket yet, and Google didn't do anything to stop people from using those. In fact, on a clean Windows 10 installation, the default search goes to Bing. So in fact, shouldn't Bing and MS be accused of monopoly for NOT giving the end user a choice on which search engine to use? Sure, you can change the default search engine, but only after going into settings, which NOT all people are tech savvy enough to do. It is fine for you perhaps and most of the current generation, but, collectively, it does not cover everyone to be able to choose. Google offered their services and did not stop others from doing the same.
@1stGruhn4 жыл бұрын
While I agree that it is difficult to show direct harm to consumers, the larger problem is the censorship of ideas\content prioritization that big tech does. They decide what constitutes correct speech based on vague user guidelines then permit subsidiaries to take down content that doesn't support that moderator's political agendas. This is what makes the concept of hate speech so insidious: censorship of detestable speech/art will always enable special interest to start to dictate what is acceptable. And by making their algorithm seek content that a viewer wants to see, they are making it far easier to stay within political/philosophic thought bubbles than at anytime in history. And then you have the issue of when searching for something, Google determines what is ultimately shown in the top list. This is a form of editorializing, as they decide the rank and relevance of the content to be shown. And since this is intrinsic to search , this one is particularly difficult to address. The power this one company has on the whole world's access to information gives them the ability to steer everyone to their perspective by only showing content that supports their end. It is the same problem when granting the power of education to a single entity. Control access to education/information and you, in large part, control thought. There is little wonder why they so willingly supported China's great firewall...
@kddingle75974 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. google has the right to run its business but has no God-given right to censorship and impose its bias on those with opposing views that he has by silencing their voices. America is all about freedom for all, not a select rich few.

While I agree with the sentiment that these platform should enable true Free Speech (however it is implement while keeping the obvious hate speech in check), the problem is that Free Speech in its current form only protects you from the government going after you. Google is a non government entity. It is their platform, their investment, their money and their rules. I 100% agree with the ideals of Free Speech however the current laws are so dated that its hard to apply them to tech companies. We need a comprehensive overhaul of our laws to account for the fast changing tech sector. Only then we can narrow down onto who acts like the censor.

@General Popcorn yeah but the reason they are betting target by anti trust isn’t censorship. google is the largest market for online advertising by far however they block certain businesses from buying ads and then work with some big corporations who do the same thing as the blocked businesses who get to advertise all the time. Blocking competitors from almost all online advertising is anti competitive business taxes.
@user-sl3uj1xq1m2 жыл бұрын
@General Popcorn I totally agree with you. However, what i want to educate you on is that any private firm that enters a market must abide by some rules to make sure that the play is fair. But companies like Google become behemoth once they occupy the major market share and this goes into their head until some one slaps a fine. In my viewpoint it is absolutely fair on the part of U.S. and U.K. to fine Google. So that these companies refrain from putting forth these hidden agenda. This is where Google is liable to the fine (I mean if you are a private firm and want to play as per your yardstick, then why did you agree to their rules? Also if Google feels that the fine is unfair, then why didn't they blow back?) Because they agree with a one kilo nod to whatever conditions the nations impose and then decry later.

What intrigues me is that no one is forcing users to use Google. This isn't like a monopoly on rail or air travel, like what's happened in the past. Or on ISP's or cell service providers. It's not like the user has only 1 option of Google. Don't like YT? There is DailyMotion and Vimeo to name two. Don't like Google Search? There is Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, and a *plethora* of others. If you're arguing that Google places prevalence on its own products first, it could very well be that users are simply just using those products more, thus more popular, thus appearing first. And finally, if you are going to discourage that type of behavior where the popularity of a product shouldn't be considered and all products must be treated equally, you're essentially creating socialism in the online search marketplace. Companies like Amazon, Walmart, etc. Already do this both online and in-store with their own products. Where are those lawsuits?

@DELTA en google itself puts out fairly unbiased opinions. The only "bias" they have is in believing science lol. While I'm not educated enough to comment on if Google has a monopoly or not I can say with certainty that they are not "censoring content that's not from the left and progressive". The only censoring they are doing is removing obviously fake and misleading facts or at the very least putting up a warning. This is similar to what twitter is doing with some of trumps tweets. They aren't censoring trump because of some agenda, they are flagging certain tweets of his because they are false, misleading, or inciting violence. The only reason that conservatives are getting hit with these flags and not liberals for the most part is because conservatives are the ones who are tweeting out all this misinformation.

Sorry, but I have used Google search and KZbin search long enough and for a wide enough variety of searches to know that on occasion, Google/KZbin is not giving me what I want and is doing so out of manipulation. In some of those cases, though, it is because the search engine is trying to guess what I want based on what others have wanted in the past instead of taking me at my word. Also keep in mind the switch that Google search did on preferred media outlets for stories on its front-page of search only a few years ago.

@@comradeofthebalance3147 Google needs to be stricter about how they operate their business. There are many cases of Google’s mistakes that I can point out. Let’s see: 1. Google Ads serving MLM, fake guru, expensive courses to startup and business enthusiasts, creating endless rip-offs and scams offers, easy money grab for opportunist 2. Google Ads serving mobile games with their addictive Gambling features, nonsense in-app purchases, in many cases comes with ridiculous prices for something worthless, targeting minorities. 3. Google ads serving ads to cloak websites designed to steal information, like your credit cards or prepaid gift cards, this is also an issue that is until now still unresolved. Basically, there are many cases of google harming customers, as their end products. I have seen countless of them and I am sure you too. Another thing, they seem to ignore user feedback, I have tried clicking on their “not interested” feature and that just make the company I don’t want to see appear more often to the point of annoyance. In the United States, antitrust law is a collection of federal and state government laws that regulate the conduct and organization of business corporations and are generally intended to promote competition for the benefit of consumers. The main statutes are the Sherman Act of 1890, the Clayton Act of 1914 and the Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914. These Acts serve three major functions. First, Section 1 of the Sherman Act prohibits price-fixing and the operation of cartels, and prohibits other collusive practices that unreasonably restrain trade. Second, Section 7 of the Clayton Act restricts the mergers and acquisitions of organizations that would likely substantially lessen competition. Third, Section 2 of the Sherman Act prohibits the abuse of monopoly power. Wikipedia
