The Gripen multirole fighter aircraft, developed by Saab, was first flown in December 1988 and entered operational service with the Swedish Air Force in 1997. It is planned that the Gripen will replace all current variants of the Viggen and Draken combat aircraft. Gripen has been developed by an industrial consortium consisting of Saab, Saab Microwave Systems (formerly Ericsson), Volvo Aero Corporation, Saab Avitronics and FFV Aerotech. A joint venture company, Gripen International, has been set up by Saab and BAE Systems to market the Gripen for export markets. BAE Systems is building the main landing gear unit and wing attachment unit.

Is there anybody else than me who draws similarities between Jas Gripen's painting work and the coloring of the great white shark? The gray top and lighter bottom part .. Even though it is quite small, it is as strong as the strongest chili, and together with it's cooperative friends it is one of the predators at the top of the food chain :)

And for example, it did not even reached the minimum requirements in Switzerland, wich means that if they buy this fighter they will get a plane that is less efficient than the F-18, the plane that is currently in use in their air force. Benjamin Le Guennic they have compared the gripen to every US aircraft except the F-22. Guess who won...the gripen. Gripen won in everything over the F-35. Hereos te funny thing even the US airforce Said That the F-35 Was a computer failed aircraft.

rbk b saldy Tejas just isn't good enough for such praising... It took 30 years to design it and the result is a light combat aircraft that isn't bad, but just not good enough. That is why India is today asking foreign companies for a deal (Saab, Lockheed-Martin, Boeing, Dassault, Mikoyan and Airbus defense are participating). India doesn't have the sufficient experience to make really good planes, it still has to count on exterior help. But maybe in 40-50 years will the Indians have caught up. We'll see!

Tanguy Godeau Im sorry, firstly Tejas took 25 years to design and get inducted (1988-2013). Secondly, Tejas is one of the most advanced platform in the world today. But like any new fighter to get inducted, its capabilities will only improve over time. I believe you are French? Was the first set of Rafale fighters inducted as good as the "F3" version today? Rafale improved over time too, didn it? Same applies for Tejas or any fighter around the world. Also, India will not buy anymore foreign fighters. Or tell me when India actually signs the contract. If you have read the latest news, the IAF has already ordered 123 Tejas mk1/mk1A and committed to 201 Tejas mk2 , totaling to 324 Tejas for the Airforce alone.

I believe the first induction was done the 17th of January of 2015, and the jets delivered aren't yet fully combat ready. Yes the capabilities of Tejas will improve over time but it doesn't make Tejas one of the most capable platforms today. It is capable, but it doesn't really compare to a Gripen for example in terms of sensor fusion, combat loads, manoeuvrability, etc... (which is actually more than normal given that it is basically India's first fully indigenous combat aircraft, whilst the Swedes have been developing combat fighters for decades, if not an almost full century) The fact that the Indian Navy refused a navalised version of the Tejas shows that something is missing in the Tejas (and not only the fact that it has difficulty in taking off from a carrier deck, because even when HAL proposed an upgrade, the Navy refused) Also, yes India has launched a Light Fighter procurement contest after the deal for 136 Rafale jets was scrapped. Today, India is testing several different aircrafts for its Navy and Air Force.

Tanguy Godeau Tejas mk1 received Initial Operational Clearance(IOC)/Induction in Dec 2013. But yes then HAL took over one year to set up manufacturing infrastructure and make the first 2 jets which were delivered in 2015, and Final Operational Clearance(FOC) stated in next 2-3 months.(cont.) Tejas mk1 is way ahead of Gripen C in several criterias like - Flight control system, Thrust To Weight Ratio , Stealth, Composite Airframe, Wing loading ,etc to name some. Sensor fusion you are talking about is on the Gripen E version, which is not in service. Sensor fusion is also expected in the Tejas mk2 expected by 2024-25. Gripen C does carry 1 ton more payload than Tejas mk1, I agree, but you cant say Gripen C is more maneuverable than Tejas. Also Tejas is India's second. The first was HAL Marut in the 1960s. The Indian Navy will induct around 40-50 Tejas mk2., they never refused. Its actually very old news that the Navy always wanted the Tejas mk2, because it needs a higher thrust to Weight ratio to take off from a STOBAR Carrier. Tejas mk1 was always to be a test and pilot training platform for the Navy. Infact the first 40 Tejas mk2 will go to the Navy from 2024-2026, and then to the Airforce from 2027. And what you are talking about, is that the Indian Airforce just released an RFI (Request for Information). There is no real testing or contract anytime soon. The reason 126 Rafale jets was scrapped was to increase Tejas orders. 126 Rafales were scrapped to just 36 , but Tejas orders went up from 40 to 123.

Great vids, beautifully shot and directed. However, I am not certain as what it is meant in the title "Why Gripens are Hotter Than Any Other Jet". Are we talking esthetics or performance? Agreed, Gripens are sexy and no doubt lethal and could give anything from Boeing, Lockheed, Panavia, Eurofighter, MiG or Dussalt a run for their money. Still, at the end of the day, none of Saab’s combat aircraft have ever been tested in the field of battle (as far as I know, correct me if I am wrong). Uber high tech is great and all and war games, one can learn a great deal about opposing aircraft, tactics, ect.. but there is nothing like testing aircraft against aircraft when everything is on the line.

Am... the NG is as far as I understand just a abbreviation of "Next Generation", and not a version designation as such. There is a 39 Gripen Demo, as two seat technology demonstrator that sometimes is called NG in media. And not to be nit-picky, but the airframes in the video is not the E/F-version, but the current C/D-version. It is 'easy' to identify the E/F by looking on the front landing gear, as it has a single wheel, not a two as A/B and C/D.

It's not F35 or Rafale level but may be F16. Importantly it's cheaper. It's not 1 Gripen vs 1 F35 it's 2. It also has a good record in integrating anyone munitions so you can pick a choose the best (or most affordable)

Most likely as it is a test pilot the communicate how the plane behaves and so on during tests and give him a “go” on different parts, but even in a an operation its a tactical commander giving the pilots instructions where to go and what to do.
