Shoplifting is a symptom of a struggling society. Of course there's shoplifting over here too but because there's a pretty decent social security, people don't have to resort to shoplifting to survive.

Also the risk is so low here, it's more beneficial financially to have these checkouts and less cashiers. The loss doesn't outweigh the speed (because the waiting lines are almost down to zero now), so they can serve more people in a shorter time period.

With the scanners, at random Some customers will get checked on whether they have scanned everything. But the calculation by the stores is that this system saves them checkout personnel which outweighs a little extra theft.

One time when they checked me they found out something was wrong and i even got a bit nervous because i was absolutely not stealing anything. Then they found out that i checked one item double so they removed it from the system. So they actually saved me a few euros.

5:45 "My grocery store is only 2 miles away". To me 2 miles would be too far from a grocery store to even consider living there. 2 miles, is 3.2 km, that would take me to the other side of the city. And I would pass 4 to 5 grocery stores on my trip. Grocery stores really are everywhere in european cities... 0:45 And no they're not just local small businesses, often the big chains will have smaller local branch stores to cater to local neighbourhoods, especially in cities. The light blue one shown in this shot called "Albert Hein", is one of the biggest supermarket chains in the Netherlands and Belgium. Yet in this case it is just a smaller, local city supermarket branch. If most of your customers come to shop by bike or on foot, you don't need a massive box store with a massive parking lot...

“What if you want a quick snack?” They have stores called snackbars where you can buy all kinds of stuff from burgers to fries to cheese hot pockets and shwarma wraps :D They’re all over the place. When I used to live in Holland, I lived next to one. The nearest supermarket was a 2 min walk. It’s all about walkability there.

The scanners is a trust system, you have your store card which allows you a scanner. When you get to check-out they do random checks that's determined by the computer. Usually they take a couple of random things and see that you scanned them. Very seldom they go through everything. We have had it since 1999 in Sweden. Having a scanner system is so helpful. You instantly knows how much you pay, you don't need to repack. Its quicker to pay than the manual check-out. But in the end its a trust system between the buyer and the store.

I use hand scanners in uk supermarkets or since the global thing I've downloaded the stores scanning app on my smartphone. The big advantage of using the app on your phone is it ties in with your loyalty card and you get offers unique to products you buy regularly, also you can create a shopping list on the app. I regularly shop at Sainsbury's and the self scanning checkout randomly selects every so often for your shopping to be checked. The supervisor will select 5 items to check that you've scanned them. Also with the amount of CCTV cameras in the stores you would be picked up for shoplifting.

I know that at the AH scanner needs to be activated by scanning your loyalty card, so it knows who you are what your personal discount offerings are, and a digital receipt is linked to your account (since a year -or two) , you can still get a physical one but in the end it's meant to save trees oh and it's also available on their app

The small grocery stores shown at @ 0:45 are definitely much smaller than the supermarket shown at @ 1:24 Some "quaint" small towns in the USA (e.g.: in Colorado, Vermont, etc.) have small grocery stores like those, but they usually aren't competitive (price or selection) with chain supermarkets that have far better economy of scale.

No no, we don't mean "2 miles close" when we say that grocery stores are very close in the Netherlands. In my case, I have literally three grocery stores within a one mile radius, the closest being only 400 yards away from me. Additionally, there are two shopping centers really close by (less than a mile from my house). We like to have zones with both residential and commercial use, so residents can enjoy the convenience of quickly buying whatever you need, without having to drive for miles (or even at all).

mostly we as a dutch family to grocery once a week. but for small things or a change in plans we by it on the day itself. so we have a weeks worth of food( mostly fresh) and tp the up with other things. also the the scanner thing is indeed with checks. when you are checking out and before you pay the screen will say that someone will come and check your bag/purchase. not always but randomly. but when taking alcohol then count on it. therefor most shops have a small section dedicaded to alhohol and tabaco so they dont have to check everyone. by the way the shops without parking are mostly found in bigger cities. and even then more in the centre. other cities will have shops with parking or the shops will have mutliple shops in the same city. Amsterdam for eample has 109 shops from the same retailer. some ar big others are very small say at a trainstation for small purchases. and that is just one retailer. in our village of 3500 persons we have 1 shop but the netherlands is small so the next city is just 10 minutes away and there are more. but we mostly stick to our own.

Where i live, in a smaller town i have a supermarket 15 minutes away if i go walking. It would be 5 or less by bike. 3 other supermarkets further away are like 10 minutes by bike. I only need a car if buying beer crates are on my list. Or to bring them back, because we also have this system where you can return bottles and beer crates. A receipt will come out of the return machine with a certain amount of money on it. If you show that receipt to your scanner, let's say it's 10 euro's it will reduce the total price of your products with those 10 euro's.

4:06 you will have random barcode checks on random items in your bag every once in a while, so its a hit and miss when shoplifting, you cant predict it, although i have come across numerous people who have tried it and ended up with one of those random confirmation tests on if youve scanned everythingXD which is always a treat to behold. besides that, there are plenty of store workers keeping an eye on what you do, since they also have to confirm the purchase of alcohol whenever such a beverage is scanned.. so theyre there regardless

What supermarkets do here is check randomly every 10 customers for shoplifting. An employee of the store will come up to you with a hand scanner and quickly checks all or 3 random items. It's not biased by skin color either, the system just counts the customers and sends the employee the machine that has locked and told the customer that someone is on their way to check. Machine blocks also for alcohol but the employee can choose to override it remotely if they think you're over 25 or come over to check

I love not just bikes. I do grocery shop a few times a week I am lucky to be a 5 minute drive from an ALDI, a german grocery store. Believe it or not my urban neighborhood would be just perfect for a european style high street but there are not places to just hang out outside and have a cup of coffee - there has been a pharmacy coming for like 3 years that just refuses to open. Everyplace is meant for car people to park, walk in, walk out get in the car and leave.
