Of course I wasnt expecting him to deal the killing blow, but I atleast thought they would mention it more than once and give him something important to do since his story is so intertwined with thanos. I was atleast expecting a proper scene where drax confronts thanos about it.

That moment changed the movie for me. A lot of how Nebula acts doesn't feel different from her usual through the movie. But she's slowly getting more hair trigger, until she goes off screaming at Drax and then Mantis. After the five years they spent as the only Guardians, Rocket is the one who means the most to her. The longer this adventure drags on the more sure she is that Rocket is going to die. And here, everything has fallen apart, shes pretty sure both Rocket and Gamora are dead because Drax and Mantis abandons ship and she breaks. And then she hears Rocket's voice. And oop, I was wrong. Now she broken. Her relief at knowing he is okay completely overwhelms her.

Gunn gets to basically make his own stories happen in a niche corner of the MCU. I’d argue that Raimi directed the hell out of MoM but it was clear the problems were that he and the writer didn’t watch Wandavision or have a rounded enough story to tell in the first place.

I miss villains that are just pure, undeniable evil. Its a breath of fresh air from villains trying to be "relatable" or "misunderstood" I love the feeling of absolutely hating a villain then watching him get his ass kicked

Thanos is unanimously agreed as the best MCU villain BECAUSE we can understand his philosophy and see him as misunderstood. There's room for genuinely evil villains when they're done well, and I'd argue GOTG has never had a good villain in the entire trilogy but this last one was by far the worst imo

One thing that i appreciate so much about this movie, is that despite it being so long, 2 and a half hours, they IMMEDIETLY establish the stakes of the film, which is simple, and understandable. Save. Rockets. Life. Thats all the motivation we need. Its not complicated, we need to save our friends life.

I liked the stakes because they are so much smaller than most MCU creations (save the world, save the universe) but so much larger for the emotional investment. If there's anything that I wish more MCU movies picked up from this one, it's that. Especially with new characters.

That makes it sound like Drax was busy doing something else, maybe eating breakfast alone, and all of a sudden decided to jump up and start dancing without absolutely any cause. Drax was dancing in celebration. Then others started to dance. Which caused Drax to dance more. Trying very hard to comprehend why celebratory dancing is actually just random dancing without cause.

There have been plenty of times and things to celebrate in the past, and he hasn't. Not just that, he's specifically said only weak people dance. Not "when i used to be a father, i used to dance" what made him change his mind? Or this survival any more special than the countless the team has had before? I'm not saying i hate it, but my tweak makes it more impactfull and meaningfull. Especially if it's a goodbye to either his or mantis' character from the mcu.

Nebula has the most underrated arc in the MCU, and probably the best one. When you think about who she was when we were introduced to her, and then who she is when she hears Rocket's voice and breaks down sobbing, while also trying to comfort a child.... wow, what a journey. Even Mantis looks over at her, because she can feel Nubula's joy and relief. It's the combination of emotions that Nebula has probably never had before, and she is overwhelmed, as anyone with great love would be. Even at the beginning of the movie, she has taken on somewhat of a mother role, even though she doesn't realize it. When Peter grabbed her arm in his drunken state, I think we all were expecting her to slap it away. Instead, she gently lays his hand on his stomach. It was a great introduction into her embracing empathy and compassion. Immediately after, we see that everything that made her so dangerous to the guardians in the beginning has now been turned against anyone who may bring them harm. She is more relentless as a protector than she was as a destroyer. Karen Gillan deserves praise for playing her so beautifully.

I think...for me...Nebula's arc came to point in GOTG2. She was battling Gamora on Ego and get the upper hand. She and Gamora exchange some conversation and Nebula shouts out... "All I Ever Wanted Was A Sister"!

Yes. She took a punch which made her give a pretty ugly face, but kept her wits and beat the shit out of them back in spectacular fashion. That moment alone makes her better than any other female MCU character in existence rn. Ofc it's not the only good moment tho. She's been handled really well by both James and the Russos. Even showing her break down at Rockets voice is just way more powerful than the typical "stone faced strong whamen" bs the MCU been pushing. Then again this team is probably the biggest collection of badasses in the MCU rn too. Idk if that even says much now I think of it 🤔 But they are true badasses indeed

All of Rocket's flashbacks were of course gut-wrenching, but what really stood out to me was Nebula's reaction to his surgery video and admitting that it was worse than what Thanos did to her!

I think it's also interesting how well Gunn manages to tell these very emotional stories through that goofy comic book lense, GOTG Vol. 2 has a scene of Yondu and Rocket getting into an argument over their own emotional issues and it's a very heartfelt and vulnerable moment for both characters But then when you pull back from it you can't help but also chuckle a little at the fact that its a big blue guy and a racoon having said argument

In weird way, I thought of Carl Barks, the person responsible for like 95% of the things everyone knows about Donald Duck, once said. He never once thought of the characters he wrote as funny cartoon animals, he looked as them as humans. Like obviously he knew what he was writing and the comics always have them do duck things But he never leaned into it. So when he had emotional moments in his comics, he was sincere and you as a reader gets caught up in it. But then you realize "I'm reading a comic about a talking cartoon duck talking to three talking ducklings about his emotions. And for some reason I'm invested in it?!" That's the same thing James Gunn does too. The movies always bring up the fact that Rocket is a racoon of course, but whenever a scene with Rocket in it is played up for drama, you are invested in it because Gunn is sincere and he wants you to see Rocket as a human in those scenes. So you forget that this is talking animal interacting with aliens and real humans and then you realize how weird it is that you are invested in the first place.

"I know who you are because you are me" honestly felt like an sniper bullet to my core, he KNOWS. You can see it on Rocket eyes too, when Yondu mentions he was sold as a child Rocket eyes go from hostility to a childish vulnerability. Rocket knew that Yondu meant it.

the sad thing is, not so long ago, western comics were doing this. They told stories of loss, abuse, addiction, and recovery. They used their medium to soften the blow a bit, and ease people into it but for anyone familiar, they still hit hard. Now they don't. Now it seems like major western comic publishers just want to focus on author self insert fantasy realization with a spotlight on diversity, representation, and wokeness

Something that really stood out to me in this movie is how well-written Peter and Gamora's relationship arc is throughout and how Gunn shows us that even though we understand Peter's perspective, HE is the one who's in the wrong. Peter struggles and refuses to accept that this is not the same Gamora and is inconsiderate of the fact that she has her own life and people she considers family (The Ravengers). His pain and denial causes him to lash out at her for not being the same Gamora that he knew and loved, and selfishly tries to force it down her throat without even trying to see it from her point of view. Gunn perfectly summarizes this in the scene where Gamora tells the team to drop her off with her people and Peter replies "You're people? The Ravengers aren't 'your people', I'm a damn Ravenger, you aren't!". He tries to tell her who she is based on who HE wants her to be without thinking about what SHE wants, and there's a line that I think went over a lot of people's heads when he says "I know you were always looking for a family, but MY Gamora, the one I lost, she didn't find it with a group of criminals, she found it with us!", which is super ironic because his Gamora actually did find it with a group of criminals, he's just mad that it wasn't them this time, and I feel like Gunn purposely put that into the script to tell us that Peter isn't thinking properly and is speaking out of pain rather than logic. Throughout the rest of the movie however, they start to understand and accept one-another for who they are, like when Rocket almost died and Peter started breaking down screaming in tears over nearly-losing a member of the team and they all hugged afterwards, this gave Gamora a new perspective of how horrible it must have been for Peter to lose his Gamora as she begins to understand why he was acting the way he was towards her. Also, the 'No Sleep till Brooklyn' scene when Gamora chose to fight with them when she could have just left, showed Peter that just because she has a new family, it doesn't make her any less of a good person, and when he finally realizes that, he feels some form of closure from the fact that the parts he loved about her are still there despite her being a different person, and that she deserves to make her own decisions and do what makes her happy. That scene where Gamora reunites with the Ravengers was beautiful and powerful because it showed us her initial perspective and how much love and happiness she already had in her life before getting stuck with the Guardians. It showed those people in the audience, me included, who were rooting for her to get back with the Guardians by the end of the movie, how ridiculous that would have been from her point of view, putting us through a similar journey to Peter's. In Conclusion, James Gunn is a GENIUS.

My favorite moments was when rocket woke up and was instantly calling for nebula, and when nebula first heard him over the comms she almost completely broke down with relief which even her normal front she puts on couldnt even hold it back, showing the greater bond they formed during the 5 years everyone else got dusted away

I love how this film adds so much more context to Rocket's response to hearing Thor talk about losing his family in Infinity War. "Me personally, I could lose a lot." With how much Rocket has suffered, losing his Guardians family again would absolutely wreck him. And that ends up happening.

Thor's losses were tragic and so sad,no wonder he self destructed in Endgame.Classic symptoms of-PTSD.I should know,I did 4 deployments to go fight in Iraq.On these tours to Iraq,I lost 29 friends total.I went thru all the things Thor went thru,but,in REAL life. That's why THOR is my favorite hero in the MCU,he's a demi-god who went thru what real people go thru and it's not fun ( painful even )

That’s my favorite scene in the whole avengers series (yeah, I’m mostly a guardians fan). It was such a touching moment, but there was some irony to it as well. He said the guardians were “The only family I ever had.” He was still denying and pushing away the loss of his first family.

For me it was Gotg vol 3 and Endgame. Ironically in Endgame the tears happened in specific moment. Its a short scene where Rocket tries to shield Groot with his body from Thanoses ship assault. Its the moment the two met after 5 years of Rocket living without Groot and now they meet again on battlefield and Rocket tries to shield Groot from missiles. It did something weird to me. And then Tony's death was played very well + the ending scene of Steve coming back to dance with Peggy and living out the life he never had a chance to experience - it was beautiful.

At first I was actually disappointed when I figured out that High Evolutionary was still alive and kicking in a Knowhere jail cell, having not died on his ship like it seemed. I just figured Rocket was gonna let him die on his own in a "you're not worth it" type of way. But I thought about it and figured that being in captivity was the ultimate punishment. Put in a cage by the raccoon he abused, with everyone around him knowing that he's no god and most likely revering his "failed" experiment as a heroic paragon, especially the higher lifeform escapees. I hope it's one of those public imprisonment types of things were he's smack dab in the center of everything and is forced to watch the imperfect people be their best selves.

The Zune is a gift from father to son. I'll say it briefly: Quill is the father figure of the group and Rocket is basically his son. This is even spelled out in the (non-MCU) Telltale game. Meredith passed the walkman on to Quill, Yondu passed the Zune on to Quill, and both were clearly a parental gift. Quill passing it down to Rocket is the same thing. This is also why Quill _loses it_ when he thinks Rocket is going to die. Even Groot- who sees Rocket as a father (that's what he said in Infinity War when he disintegrated)- didn't freak out that much when Rocket flatlined.

I liked the parallel between Quill and the High Evolutionary in their attempts to change things from what they are. Quill wanting the new Gamora to be something different and HE changing things from what they are meant to be. Makes Quills arc of letting Gamora go more meaningful.

Nebula was truly underrated in this movie. With Rocket out, she was truly Quill's second in command and showed all the emotions you have with your family - self sacrifice, empathy, anger, joy, relief and even sparks of love. While I understand some of the complaints people have about Adam Warlock, your video reminded me of why I enjoyed his part in the story so much. His character arc and scenes fit the narrative of the other Guardians so well. He was supposed to be a perfect being(like Rocket being part of a perfect society) sent to capture and potentially kill someone(much like Gamora as an assassin), yet he failed because much like the Guardians in the first film, he was naive and had no moral compass or emotional intelligence. He spares the life of an animal(Blurp) which directly contrasts the High Evolutionary's willingness to kill Rocket's friends from the past because they didn't align with his so called "perfection". He starts to develop his own ideals when he refuses to kill Blurp despite Ayesha's demands for him to do so, then he loses her, the only family he ever had. It's not any secret to say that losing family is a theme that pretty much every Guardian has been through- Peter also lost his mom, Yondu, had to kill his dad, then Gamora from the original timeline, Drax lost his wife and daughter, Rocket watched all his friends die right in front of him *(twice),* Nebula lost her sister for a time, and Mantis of course lost her father Ego(though that wasn't really a loss since he was a maniac). He then mindlessly rages and tries to kill them again, and when he fails, instead of being left to die, Groot shows him compassion and empathy by saving him and giving him a second chance, which he uses to save Peter and give HIM a second chance at his life, which he used to reunite with his grandfather and rediscover himself. Like you said in the video, the story is centered a lot around second chances- Mantis gets a second chance to discover herself, Drax gets a second chance at being a dad, Nebula gets a second chance at living like the person she wants to be without her father's looming shadow, Rocket gets a second chance at life after reuniting with his friends in the afterlife to become the leader of the new Guardians, and Gamora emerges with her experiences with the Guardians as a more compassionate person who's discovered where she belongs, getting a new life with them(since the original version of her is gone). I think that's why so many people write Adam off as an unnecessary character, because his role in the narrative is smaller and less obvious, but the story wouldn't have made much sense without him or by having him appear later. It would've been pointless to mention the Sovereign being a creation of the High Evolutionary if they weren't in the movie, and it would've made less sense to tease Adam's appearance only to have his mother appear without him. And the idea of them being a creation of the HE did add to the story because it made him appear even more dangerous and narcissistic since they had clashed with the Guardians and caused them a bit of trouble in vol 2. Not to mention that the High Evolutionary wouldn't have even known Rocket was still alive if the Sovereign hadn't told him, and therefore the whole storyline of the HE wouldn't have happened since he would've thought 89P13 was still dead. And introducing Adam later wouldn't make any sense because he was created to destroy THIS iteration of the Guardians. Having him attack a whole new team after all but one or two of its members are gone would've been pointless. If anyone actually read all that you're a champ lol

The other thing for Quill that I think goes unsung is that he tried to view the gamora he knew as dead. He viewed her as having died (which is accurate) but the rest of the team always replies "she isn't dead", which I think was unfortunately contributing to him not moving on.

Besides the emotional scenes with Rocket's friends, my favorite part of the movie was encapsulated by Nebula's line, "This is worse than what Thanos did to me." It could have easily been standard hyperbole, but it wasn't. I feel like Nebula and Rocket understand each other more deeply than we know, not just because of their cybernetic nature, but because they've both learned to become empathetic instead of callous. (Rocket's always had a slightly unhealthy taste for violence.) And it's this line from Nebula that shows how far she has come. Rocket's saving the animals shows the same development of empathy.

I love this film. I saw the trailer once I think so I went in quite fresh. I loved Rocket’s story. It says a lot about a film where the flash back scenes which could halt a story are so compelling they are just as good as the present day scenes. “It sure is good to have friends” and then cut back to present day as the Guardians are trying to save Rocket Everyone had a good arc in this film. Rocket learnt that yes death would bring him back to the journey he wanted to go on but that’s not the journey he needs to go on….by the way. I loved the scene where he sees the Raccoons. A mirror of the start where he is taken, they looked at Rocket like a god and what does he do, he calls himself a Racoon, he is just like them, that’s how he was made to be. Him saying that to High Evolutionary (a guy who tried to make him not like a Racoon) is wonderful Mantis learnt that sometimes in life you need to take a chance on yourself and do what you need to do for yourself Drax learnt that just because his family is gone doesn’t mean he can’t still be that father figure Nebula realised she shouldn’t be harsh on the people around her because of her past and instead should try and build the life she never had Star Lord learnt tk face his fears and go home in my favourite scene in the film. He also learnt how to fall out of love and that being ok We as the audience bonded with this group so much we now understand Groot Just, wonderful

The feeling I got watching this movie was the same overwhelming joy, shock, excitement, thoughtfulness, and emotion I felt watching the first guardians in 2014. The mcu has been my favorite form of media since 2008 and ever since Endgame I was starting to get tired of the formulaic feel of the films in the mcu (besides No Way Home and maybe Loki). This film made me remember why I love this series so much and the mcu as a whole. Here’s to hoping and praying the Disney machine doesn’t mess up the mcu as a whole and let’s these creators and their visions come to fruition in the way they are intended instead of pumping out the mediocrity we have experienced from the mcu post Endgame. The heart and soul felt in so many of the earlier mcu films has been thrown by the way side in place of trying to make as much money possible at the sacrifice of a genuinely great story. I can’t wait to see what Gunn does with DC and I hope either he can come back to do something new with mcu or we are blessed with another great storyteller creating something that blows our minds again. Keep in mind that allowing directors complete control isn’t always a good thing. In Thor Ragnorok Taika had about 60-70% control over the production, story, script, and nearly every other aspect. One thing I noticed about the High Evotionary that was really compelling is how he fails to understand his role as a father to all these beings. A normal parent would be ecstatic over the accomplishments of their children, since they want their children to grow past who they are and become better people. The High Evotionary, on the other hand, becomes jealous of Rocket when his creation figures out the solution to a problem he could never solve. He's so angry that he's sent into a fit, and completely loses control of himself. Throughout the narrative of Guardians Vol. 3, the High Evotionary rationalizes his desire to recapture Rocket by stating that Rocket is the solution to his problem of failing to create the perfect being, but even his own underlings call him out on his bullshit. The thinly veiled truth is that the High Evolutionary is obsessed with Rocket, specifically over the fact that Rocket's intelligence has surpassed his own. In the end, it's that single-minded obsession that allows him to be defeated, despite his overwhelming power. He tunnel visions on Rocket, allowing his ship to be destroyed, and his body to be broken down by the other Guardians.

There's a lot of wonderful things about this movie, but one thing stands out to me: THE HIGH EVOLUTIONARY WAS WRONG ABOUT ROCKET BEING UNIQUE. The HE thinks Rocket is special because of his capacity for creative thought, but what do his friends do in the flashback? They name themselves. By taking the time to build bonds and experiences with each other, each creature creates an identity for themselves. If HE had shown patience and kindness with his creations, had shown them love, he could have recognised their unique value as they are. But he couldn't. And that is why he lost.

I think the thing about Gamora and why he acted so ruthlessly has to also do with the fact that she was essentially told her future, and not only that, but she was told that she is going to change in radical, and frankly terrifying to her ways, something that she sees as a weakness. Gamora of GOTG3 has no allegiance to Thanos, she's just trying to resist the change in herself, and at the end she also comes to terms with that side of herself that could have been in love with Peter, not that that will ever happen, that will be very weird for everyone involved, and that is also tragic.

I love the fact that Rocket defeated the High Evolutionary with something he invented in his spare time in the beginning of the movie. He was afraid all these years for nothing. You can feel his mocking tone when he activated his antigravity boots and tells his creator his full name. The High Evolutionary was so boastful to Peter about his gravity powers before, but to Rocket, he's just an old man who's disappointed with his creation for being smarter than him. The comprehension that his creation felt pity with his lower mental capacity is massively devastating to the High Evolutionary, and Rocket knows that. I think that's why he didn't kill him at the end.

I havent cried in any MCU movie because i was simply not attached to these characters profoundly. It started becoming rinse and repeat over and over and eventhough i think infinity war was an amazing film. I did not cry in that film nor endgame because i simply dont love those characters. With the guardians though, as you’ve mentioned it just hits different for some reason. I just graduated high school in 2014 when the first one came out a month after i was done with high school, and i loved the first movie as well as the second. This one oh my god was just excellent, i got very watery eyed multiple times because Gunn knows how to hit emotional beats like a skill when it comes to extremely well written characters. It was a breathe of fresh air finally watching a good MCU movie and losing Gunn will be felt especially after how great this movie was and how poorly everything has been after endgame.

I need them to have a moment in the next _Guardians Of The Galaxy_ movie, or whatever movie Groot is in, where he's just been speaking like a normal person the whole movie long, because we can understand him now, and then someone is like, "What do you _mean_ he said this? He just keeps saying I am Groot!"

What hits me hardest about this movie is that this really brings what Yondu yelled about to Rocket back to mind. Rocket had something beautiful and lost it, then had the luck of finding another family. It's no wonder Rocket acted out. He was scared of finding something good because he didn't feel like he deserved it. I'm totally cool with Adam being a total himbo. He'll totally become the new David Bowie in later installments. I hope. I also love that everyone got a chance to shine in this movie. Mantis had awesome moments, Nebula had awesome moments, Groot had awesome moments. You get what I mean.

I already loved the film and thought that it was fantastic, but this just makes it even better!! My biggest problem with the movie was Quill risking his life for the Zune just so he could give it to Rocket, and this explained why that was so important to Quill and why that was not a big stupid decision by James Gunn after all. I do agree that this movie is fantastic and is one of the greatest MCU trilogies of all time, and even one of the greatest movie trilogies of all time.

Kevin Feige and the Marvel Studios needs to really reflect on this series to understand why this is a fan favorite, and why they are the best films produced under the MCU umbrella. They try to storyboard the action sequences to give their animators some lead time in the early phases of production, which is why they always feel shoehorned into these movies instead of being a more organic, choreographed, and seamless part of the narrative. If they slow down on the title release dates and actually allow their directors and writers to develop the plot first, instead of trying to finish a half-solved puzzle after the battle sequences are mapped out, you wind up with a far more coherent film and dialogue. That's the problem they've had with adamantly sticking to this daisy chain of movie titles over the years - they know where the entire franchise is headed before they have even filled the director's chair, and while it's ambitious and worked well for the Infinity Saga, this model of rushing films out to theatres really takes away from the artistic vision and storytelling from some of the most celebrated modern directors and arthouse producers in Hollywood. Look at how they used Taika Waititi, Sam Raimi, Cate Shortland, or Chloe Zhao - promising, creative, acclaimed directors for their respective bodies of work, but thwarted by studio overreach when it comes to these Marvel movies. Let them take some chances and do something different! There's a reason why so many people are saying audiences are bored of all these MCU movies, and it's because they all are confined to this tired, predictable formula. Gunn has proven that with time and consideration these characters are complex and engaging, with the highlights of these films coming from the shared dialogue, not the routine action sequences that get spoiled in the trailers. The CGI should embellish the films, not drive the whole narrative in the hopes that people will be blown away by the visuals over compelling character development ( *cough* Quantumania *cough cough cough* ). Give your studio staff more breathing room. I would rather wait a couple of years between theatre releases than have sub par productions flushed out every 4 to 6 months. When done right, these films are moving pieces of cinema - I have not cried so much in a movie theatre before in my life until Wakanda Forever, and now Volume 3. We care about these fictional characters because they reflect our humanity so well, and it hurts when their films do not do them justice.

Wonderful commentary! We (two doctors and a university professor) spent an hour and a half after the movie standing outside the theater discussing G of the G vol.3, and only stopped because it got so late! I really appreciate your video! Thank you so much!

I like to believe that Adam Warlock was done quite well in the context of this movie - he was antagonistic in the movie, but he was never a major threat, mainly because Adam did not think himself as one thanks to his naive attitude. He was just simply following orders from the people he was most familiar with (Ayesha and the High Evolutionary). That being said, he has the mental capacity to understand that killing without purpose is unjustified, such as how he refused to kill Blurp despite Ayesha's orders. When faced with a reason why the Guardians, the reason he even existed in the first place, refused to kill him, he quickly lets that belief of doing good for the sake of it get to him to the point it overrides the purpose of his existence (to defeat the Guardians and become the source of superiority for the Sovereign). And yeah, many can call Adam saving Peter as a gag because it references Adam and God, but to me, I think it displays how Adam's humanization as a character has come full-circle - he still has a long way to go as a character, but by rescuing arguably the most human character that is still alive in the MCU (Peter), he ultimately chooses to be more human instead of trying to be the God he wasn't even sure he wanted to be.

What I partly love about this film is how all of the character's arcs were built slowly and managed to fulfil themselves in a final film for our rendition of the main Guardians cast. Particularly Nebula - I'm often one to roll my eyes at a villain-turned-ally because it's almost never an earned character development, but they've fully sold Nebula's character arc and progression. It's been built over several films and she's been subject to many situations with the Guardians that would lead her to becoming the person she is now.

All the gaurdian movies have one very emotional scene that I always go back to watch, peter reaching for his mother at the end in the first, mantis feeling drax's grieving by the poolside in vol 2, and the flashbacks in vol 3, they just make the movies so impactful and what sets them apart from the rest of the MCU

This movie was insanely good and my favorite MCU film ever. The fight seen after Rocket says "I'm done running" was the best fight seen in Marvel Cinematic history, imo. I've watched this movie 5 times and the 5th time I ate some mushrooms. I cant even explain how freaking insane the movie was. I mean, I already knew how great it was and already though it was the best MCU movie I had seen, but taking those shrooms took it to a ridiculous level of pleasure. I've seen half of the MCU movies on shrooms, and this one blew the rest away. If you are a person that partakes in shrooms, you should take some and watch this movie. You will not be disappointed.

I really like how during your speech or letting things and people learn and grow into who they are and how you can't force that, you use scenes where Peter is trying to convince Gamora to change into who he wants her to be, someone she isn't I think it's an interesting parallel to make between the hero of the other movies and the villain of this story
