I love this. What I like about Coldplay's guitar parts is that they are not over the top. Usually they are the companion of something, wether is Chris voice, the piano, or the drums. Jonny B is truly underrated.

Coldplay is wildly underrated in the guitar community. Parachutes is an absolute MASTERPIECE. So many bands have just been imitating them for the past 20 years, and most modern worship music is just U2 and Coldplay put together lol. I far prefer radiohead but it's easy to tell that parachutes was nothing like them but more of a new post britpop album

There is this book I read about the band, written by one of their closest friend (Mat Whitecross I believe) that's called Life in Technicolor, just like the song. In an interview inside the book, Jonny said that his work for Coldplay has always been the same, and that he only had one purpose : find a melody that's recognizable and that would never steal the show from the piano part of the chords in the song. And I think that's the genius of that man. He plays lead but without getting in front of everything, and thinking about it, I agree that most Coldplay songs aren't about solos and big riffs, they are just amazing sound production and emotions you live and travel with. Just the effects he uses on his guitar are incredible, I mean he sounds just like no one else (he was inspired a lot by The Edge from U2, but I think he has his own personnality, by far). A great musician without a doubt
@nekif820

I really agree with this. And I have quite likened Johnny with The Edge especially after watching a KZbin video where The Edge was talking about how he came up with With or Without You's outro riff and he said that it could have transformed into its own guitar solo but decided to maintain it as is because of how satisfyingly chill and non-dramatic it sounds. I think he made the right choice.

"Real" guitar players are understandably naturally attracted to "guitar" music genres... And the higher their training and technique the more they'll look for technical stuff... But, being a real guitar player doesn't stop you from being a musician and also a human being who can be touched by beautiful music... It doesn't matter how fast or well I can play, or if I spent years studying and working on my guitar skills, or if my chord vocabulary is complex... At the end of the day great music is music that touches my soul and Coldplay does just that...
@martin-1965

For 40 years, I've never been a "guitarist" but I've been "the main guy playing the guitar" in my band and somehow we've played 1,000s of gigs and recorded a few never heard of albums and had a blast all along the way. Until a few years ago I thought a Mixolydian was a character in Star Wars, so yeah my guitar heroes - as well as the usual - were my contemporaries like Johnny Marr, Mick Jones from the Clash, the Edge, Will Sargeant from Echo and the Bunnymen, and many more. Johnny Buckland is an amazing player at creating huge motifs for the songs. He makes music and makes the song. I was lucky I guess to realise it wasn't an arms race to be the fastest gun on the block. Happy to let the singer take the glory :)

Dude, I honestly don't get why people hate on Coldplay so much - in the sense that even as a fan I get why people would dislike them, but not hate on them as hard as they do. I've always really, really liked their music. They've got some amazing melodies, arrangements and many pretty good lyrics. Also, one thing I really admire about them is how they're not afraid to try things. They've made folk-ish stuff and indie rock in their first two records, straight up dance pop in "Mylo Xyloto", hip-hop influenced things in "Ghost Stories", more artsy unique stuff in "Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends"... Like, it's really cool as an artist to try all those things. Oh, and before anyone mentions it, I'm also a Radiohead fan. Yes, it's possible.

I like their general approach to music. Some of their early stuff I really enjoyed (like "Yellow.") Good melodies. I like the less-is-more approach to the guitar parts. I should really like them, but ... they just sound so "beige" to me, for lack of better description. It's all subjective, and I'm sure a lot of my music is boring as feck to other people, but Coldplay just doesn't dig at my soul. The music I've heard by them just doesn't have any "edges." But I can see how others adore them.
@anenbie

@@pulykamell I get that argument. A fellow musician I know also says the same thing. I don't know, to me their music sounds pretty touching at some points - take songs like "Atlas" or "O", for example. Other songs just hype me up so much, like "A Head Full Of Dreams" or "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall". And yes, the "less is more" approach to guitar is great indeed!

Man! I covered fix you with its bridge guitar riff, but I kept recording again and again because I kept failing just because it’s long and so freaking boring. The whole band is great at songwriting, nothing fancy but sounds good

Coldplay is music you’re forced to listen to because that dude who played piano in high school and had no personality walks up to you at the bar to talk about the “good ol’ days” and he plays it on TouchTunes and completely ruins the vibe but he thinks he’s being deep while doing it despite openly admitting he thinks mayonnaise is spicy. His parents are also paying his tab.

I play the bass in a 100% Coldplay tribute band. At first, i thought it would be easy. And often, it is. And sometimes it’s really demanding to play the REAL part. I have to listen to albums, to Watch lives in order to play the real deal. And on the guitar side, it’s really harder than it seems. If you can play smoothly the Adventure Of A Lifetime riff, you’re a good guitarist in my own opinion.

its all about how you play it good example is fix you. Yes everbody can play it. But can you make it sound the same as buckland that requires a certain energy of playing. In most cases this makes it different. I consider people like jonny and the edge more of a textural player which is a side thats not like the big solo you see a lot

my first love of music wa downloading A rush of blood to the head on my ipod touch, the only album i really wanted for a flight to FLORIDA, 2 hours away. Like my first flight, i wanted music. It was COLDPLAY. What a masterpiece of an album. I just knew the scientist, than i listened to the whole thing and politik, daylight, amsterdam are perfect songs. Listened to the album 5 times and boom we were there. This was before i played guitar, but damn did i appreciate that music

Has anyone ever heard the difference between Johnny’s guitars over the years? Like… i’ve tried my gear sound like a Rush Of Blood To The Head on guitar (i don’t know what sort of ES 335 he uses) and jezzz man… what a sound. Even the shift to a telecaster completely since x&y

The good thing about coldplay is that since every single song is composed on the piano the guitar is almost always just ambiental licks. Jonny has tons of freedom.

I really don't get the hate on Coldplay. Not all bands have to be overly complex or lyrical deep to be a good band. Sometimes you just want to appeal to what people like without changing your essence.
