I also absolutely love the fact that, usually gumball is emotionally unstable and irrational- and penny is the stable ground to help him out and keep him down to earth- But when penny was being the emotionally unstable one, gumball stepped up as the stable, level headed guy to help her out oike she usually does with him. I wish in the finale, Mordecai had ended up with EITHER of his love interests from the series instead of just doodling a new character with no personality or even a name. Mordecai and CJ complemented each other so well, and were only separated because Mordecai ended up trying to hard to be poetic at Muscle man's wedding. Mordecai and Margaret had such a long history, and were shown to still have a connection, as well a guaranteed happy ending (assuming Daisuke's onion volcano prediction would have been accurate) flip a coin, make two alternate endings, or even just let him die alone, because bat wife is just nothing.

king of games and anime I think that was the point. in every single show almost, the character ends up with their main love interest through the series. but here's the thing, that not life. it dosnt turn out that way a lot of the time. mordaci thought he found the love of his life twice and was wrong both times. that happens in real life. lots of people don't end with who they thought they were going to. that dosnt make it less meaningful. it makes it realistic and parallels real life. and in honesty, all of regular shows morals relate to real life.

The reason the episodes and their love is kinda different is because Gumball and Darwin have very different ideas of love and different things they want. They're generally just very different. Gumball's love (or feelings, whatever) to Penny has been there for a while, and Gumball knows she likes him back, at least to some extent. Their love has trust and friendship already. Gumball, although arrogant at times, truly cares about Penny and wants the best for her. Gumball seems to want more of a sensual relationship. It is 100% right that Gumball is immature, as shown in future episodes: but since Penny wants the same type of relationship and is mature in the ways Gumball is not but also has the immaturity in the sense of humor (and more), it works. Contrastingly, Darwin likes Carrie on more of a baseline level, not super close. It's more of a middle school crush, just an "OHMYGOSHSHEISAMAZINGANDIWANNAKISSHERORHOLDHERHANDORSOMETHINGOMGOMGOMG" type thing. As well as being this type of crush, Darwin is more shy and unsure of himself. Hence the more blushing. This also explains why there were more love interests for Darwin, as Darwin is unsure of himself at best and isn't 100% sure what he wants. This also applies to Carrie, hence the "do you want to go somewhere, do something..." That she said in the Matchmaker. Darwin and Carrie are both unsure of what they want exactly in a relationship, but their mutual excitement to find new things and spend time together keeps the relationship strong. It just works.

I believe Gumball is the best cartoon out there that handles romantic relationships. Pretty ironic considering its a comedy show. But, besides the main 2 relationships of Gumball and Penny and Darwin and Carrie, theres also Principal Brown and Mrs Simian, and the beautiful relationship that is Nicole and Richard. I think its pretty neat, and I believe that every Gumball episode that tackles romance does it the best.

I absolutely love Gumball's character in The Shell. I love when he and Penny are talking "privately" in his room and he tells her that it's not for the best that she's forbidden to be herself, and that they can deal with her true self together. I've always found it interesting to see the more joking characters have their serious moments, and this was one of the ones where I was dead quiet, leaning forward on the couch because I was so invested in it. I love when he called Penny extraordinary. It made my heart MELT! The music behind it added to it, too. His panic over accidentally offending her was so wholesome, and the fact that he needed to take the time to find one of the most beautiful (imo, I love the word extraordinary) attributes a person can be described with was extremely sweet and I remember letting out an audible "aww" while putting my hand to my heart. It was that impactful on me and it was ONE WORD! Finally, I love when Penny asks if he could really love someone like her while she is a wolf and proceeds to try scaring him off by growling at him. It was sad and I honestly could relate to the idea of wanting to keep those you care about at a distance because you're more or else scared of yourself. His reply of "That's not what you are, it's just how you feel". Yes, the kiss made me CHEER because I was so damn happy, but hearing a line like that come from Gumball of all people on this show was something that stuck in my memory. Basically what I'm saying is, I love The Shell and Gumball's more serious attitude was definitely welcomed on my end.

"The Matchmaker" was very effective because it saved the emotional closer for the end- it didn't have the intense build-up, sure, but the fact of the matter is that there were effectively two conflicts going on throughout the episode instead of one major concept - in this case, Darwin's forced love for Teri and Carrie's true, unrequited love for Darwin (which has been up in the air for a really long time) - and in finding the proper balance between the two, the show was able to execute something both emotionally and comedically strong. This episode was consistently hilarious, and I actually mean that. The sheer amount of inventive and weird twists the writers were able to put into the episode is remarkable. Darwin is sad because he is without the girl of his dreams which, Gumball surmises, is Teri. He then goes to Carrie to help him make the two fall in love. Carrie, initially reluctant to commit to the idea due to her own love of Darwin, stalls for a good while before finally caving, sacrificing her love for him just to make Darwin happy with Teri. That is, except for the fact that Darwin was never in love with Teri. He was in love with Carrie all along, but by subjecting him to the powers of a love potion, he's found a new love of his life. (I will admit that the episode is a bit different if you pick up on the whole "not appearing in a photograph" thing because it at least partially renders some of the plot null, but it certainly doesn't harm what follows.) This was about Hansley Jr. being able to perform every stupid lovey thing his character had to, and he did great! Probably the biggest moment was Darwin's whole song at the beginning, which, aside from being a great entrance for the episode (abrupt ending and all), is a great showcase for Hansley Jr.'s singing talents. For him to voice Darwin already requires an artificially higher pitch, but to take that and go even higher and more rhythmically is astonishingly impressive. Now, the jokes. While the new edition of Gumball overracting a painful death is kind of worn out at this point, the desired effect - to lure Teri into a quarantine room- is a complete disaster once she realizes that the waste Gumball is in is actually soda. We then cut to the quarantine room, with Darwin taped to the wall, rose in his mouth, with that freaking R&B music in the background. Then, the school nurse, the most underrated character in the whole series, walks in and deadpans, "I don't think there's a cure for that." That's a long set-up but Christ, that's impeccable stuff, especially for the sheer brevity of the actual scene. And it completely worked. I enjoyed the characterization of this episode very much. Gumball and Carrie were both very well-written here, especially the latter. The writers were generous enough to let us see the different sides to our favorite ghost girl, from her deviousness to her vulnerability. This makes her a dynamic character that works off of any other character she’s placed with well. What completes her though is her maturity throughout the ordeal. Had this episode taken place in a prior season, there is no doubt in my mind that Carrie would have taken more measures to sabotage Darwin’s chances of romance than was shown here. As a result, she becomes likeable and someone who you want to root for. Not to discount Gumball himself for a second, because he certainly isn’t a slouch, either. Gumball may be up to his convoluted, nonsensical shenanigans as per usual, but this isn’t the usual Gumball we know as far as actual personality goes. This is the selfless, determined Gumball that we’ve seen in episodes like The Shell, which I draw a number of parallels to. Speaking of, the acknowledgement of that episode’s events gives a deeper clarity as to why he goes to the lengths that he goes to here. Gumball is all too familiar with Darwin and Carrie’s predicament, and thus his sincere wishes for his brother and friend makes a lot of sense. Other then that, the show kicked into its real victory lap when Carrie and Gumball fail to separate the two new lovebirds, and the ways that the two attempt to sabotage are downright inspired. At one point, Gumball rubs Alan all over the place, causing the static to stick to Teri's face, making them kiss. Darwin, blatantly entranced, is fine, because she's too good not to be shared. All of these jokes are great because they require two components to effectively hit - a smart visual gag and a humorous way for Darwin or Teri to dismiss it. Another moment really stood out to me as well- when Teri asks Darwin how many people he's kissed: "Rachel? Carrie? Gumball? Gumball? Gumball? Okay, what's up with you guys? Penny? Sussie? Alan's balloon knot? Chris Morris?" First of all, because I'm a complete idiot, that stupid Sussie cutaway kills me every single time. But secondly, the fact that even Teri addressed how weird it is that Gumball and Darwin kiss so frequently was a surprisingly smart joke. It's the show admitting how lazy the whole concept is as to elicit humor, especially in regards to entire episodes in the first season being framed around it ("The Dress," "The Pressure"). There's a bit of risk in the writers slyly admitting how tripe the idea is, fully aware of how glaringly obvious the gimmick will be from now on, but it pays off amazingly well. The capper, though, is a truly sweet and touching moment. Carrie's tear invigorated the love potion, but it also returned Darwin to reality- a clever bit of foreshadowing, I might add, and one less blatant than that of your most beloved episode, which pretty much summarizes the entire plot a la "Beauty and the Beast" from the get-go. It's the subtlety that keeps you on edge; we know it'll work out, but the fact that it wasn't as predictable made the ending stronger. Then, of course, there's the kiss, and while it's a lot less monumental than "The Shell," it's a touching moment nonetheless. Darwin's not a sweeping character, so to see him receive such a small moment definitely supplemented his place in the show without weakening the outcome. In other words, it's a flawless finish. What I love about the relationships in this show is how they actually replicate how pre-teens would be in a relationship. Penny and Gumball for example, are 12, and instead of making it cringy, rushed and unrealistic, the show's creators actually put effort into their writing. Gumball and Penny actually act like real 12 year olds. Most shows/movies that make young kids get into relationships make them act like adults and make them do all these weird, cringy stuff that make me lose brain cells. But Gumball managed to make their audience actually relate. Even though 12 year olds wouldn't really get into relationships, they do have crushes nevertheless.

At first, Darwin seems against scaring the kids out of their candy. That is...until Gumball mentions Carrie will need a body to possess to eat the candy. There's a point where, after collecting said candy. Carrie begins to blush, while asking Darwin's permission to "borrow" his body. Darwin even tries to spray breath spray in his mouth to prepare. In the end, they defeat the REAL demon and Darwin and Carrie prepare to part ways. That is, until Carrie shyly asks Darwin to go out for ice cream

I personally believe that Gumball has mastered many things that most cartoons I like better haven't. I can't describe why I like the other cartoons better but I do. Either way, Gumball is a very smart cartoon that I adore very dearly. Gumball has mastered relationships. Regular Show and Adventure Time suck at that. The animation is always on point. MLP and Steven Universe have many animation mistakes, if not then a few. Gumball may have a couple bad episodes but mot nearly as much as more popular shows like Spongebob Squarepants or Family Guy. I love this show either way and hope to God the last few seasons are good. Oh yeah forgot. Uh... *Insert meme that triggers you but makes me laugh here*

I think gumball benefits from being script driven. The stories are more structured and they have a wide variety of comedy. They do word play, physical stuff, puns, they play with the media they do funny voices. They really find unique ways to find humor. But they also have episodes like the origins that have the emotional weight! Something about the European sensibility of this show is just so unique

One of the reasons why this show works is because they act honestly towards relationships. Nicole and Richard actually have a loving relationship, unlike in most cartoons where the parents seem to hate each other and only make things worse for each other

I really relate to both Penny and Carrie, as I had to deal with self-esteem issues during middle school and often lashed out. Seeing Penny overcome her insecurities and Carrie become nicer really reflected on how I changed. Great video!

I love that the water surrounding Darwin is an amalgamation of conflicting emotion between sorrow and a damp passion. He talks about an inability to breath underwater while being in his element where he is most comfortable, then the line about his heart being drenched in gasoline. He could tell Carrie how he feels and be passionate with her if he could only let go of his comfort. Even further a fish out of water is vulnerable. Fish out of water: a terminology that describes discomfort when out of a familiar element. The whole song is a characterization of Darwin's insecurities and feelings towards her. Then when Gumball walks in he changes Darwin's entire mood bringing in this lighter tone that literally changes the entire color temperature of the room. Further with Carrie being invisible in the picture, that right there, is just another personal touch that is not only funny for the plot twist, but also a caricature of how a good portion of people feel compared to others around them. My god this whole episode could be nitpicked like a petri dish of well sorted plot elements. I love being a literary major.

Personally, as much as I like it when a show tackles romance respectfully, not many shows tackle with the idea that well. Hell, a lot of made for kids Valentines Day episodes make it apparent that it either clashes with other things or in general, it seems rushed/bad. But from what I heard, Gumball is an exception which, cool. Probably from the two episodes you looked over, The Shell would probably be my pick. Mostly because they don't ditch the comedy but at the same time, take their characters seriously. As much as I would like some shows to tackle romance more often,it's not always done gracefully and it clashes with other aspects.(For an example, Regular Show I heard had this problem when they started introducing romance in the show.) I would think that if the said topic was done more often, maybe writers will have a better grasp at how to do this while making sure it doesn't take over other aspects of said show.

Ah, a video that I've been looking forward to so much that NICKtendo was correct; I've deprived myself of sleep just for this, hahahahaha. Just kidding. But yes, I was anticipating this a lot. I more or less agree with almost everything stated here. The romance of Gumball is indeed one of the best I've ever seen in any animated series because of the tactfulness it was handled with and the fact that it does not override whatever story is being told. And the fact that Gumball and Penny, even with their respective hesitations, are more forward in showing their affections for each other compared to most other couples is a breath of fresh air and makes their relationship that much more organic; they know that they like each other, it's common knowledge to both of them, and they want to express it, but their hindrances aren't the stupid kind like "does he/she like me or not"? The anticipation for the revelation of Penny's true form was very palpable and not just cultivated within the community, but also acknowledged within the show itself. And like the romance, it doesn't override other aspects of the show; subtle hints are given here and there, and without being bombarded towards the audience. When you're not being bombarded by something constantly, you're genuinely interested in what's to come instead of feeling obliged to find out. There _was_ anticipation for Darwin and Carrie as a couple, but the buildup was of a much smaller scale. The gap between Halloween, the first show of hints for the couple, and The Scam, which also hinted on the couple, is around four years, and the show didn't build it up that much, unlike the community who teased it with their own theories. Strange thing about your argument, Jay, is that my stance on The Shell and The Matchmaker is the opposite to yours. I found The Shell to be the more somber and serious of the two, with comedy still being strong but secondary in the long run, while The Matchmaker has equal parts drama and equal parts comedy, with neither of them being more pronounced than the other. Personally, I prefer The Shell for the reason you stated that the show's meta-awareness is better in special/grand occasions; since that episode _is_ a special/grand occasion, the comedy is considerably minimal compared to other episodes. I can see where you're coming from when you say The Matchmaker is a pleasant surprise, especially because of the buildup of Darwin and Carrie being so minimal, and it is indeed triumphant. I also agree that the running gag of Captain Obvious Richard wore out its welcome at the end, and it is more invasive than what The Matchmaker's ending had. Though I'd say that The Matchmaker's ending is inherently a bit of a joke itself, with the kissing noises and Carrie trying and failing to shield Gumball's eyes. And as you are biased in favor of The Matchmaker, I am biased in favor of The Shell. It's a more personal episode for me, alongside The Choices. It's atmospheric, the culmination of the anticipation was *perfect*, and it's a prime example of an episodic show not strictly adhering to the Status Quo to be engaging. That's just me, though. I still find The Matchmaker great and one of season 5's best, but it's not as special to me as The Shell is. That's all I've got to say. This video was worth the wait.
