I started camping in hammocks in my teens and now I'm 80. For me Hammocks are comfort , convenient , easy to set up and can go where tents would never go. I use a Therm-a-rest self inflating full length mummy style air mattress , about 1/2 to 3/4 inflated and sleep on the diagonal. Most folks try a drug store type of hammock and don't like it , get a good Jungle hammock , one that's bug proof all the way around it. Thinking about a hammock , get a copy of Derick Hansen's "The Ultimate Hang " it explains everything from A to Z. I got one and learned a lot even after all the years I've spent in hammocks.

I've slepted a few times in hammocks while on a long distance bike trip but mostly it was ground dwelling when time to go to bed. Easier to maintain a simple/lightweight/cost effective setup that way. Also, you always have ground, you don't always have trees. Open to trying it out again though bc I'm sure there are hidden pros/advantages.

Tents are fine. Hammocks are fine. A bedroll you carried in on your horse is fine. Just enjoy God's creation.

Have not camped in minus degrees but it works fine in colder temperatures if you have layers of air between you and the cloth mock!

Just recently found out hammock camping, always knew it but didn't care to try. Once I tried, couldn't go back haha. Does anyone have personal recommendation for hammock camping beginners with budget around $100? I have one Ticket to the moon Original and a Decathlon which don't have a mosquito net.

It is pretty great, though having spent half an hour or more slowly riding around the campground today trying to find a good site to set a nice hang. It's not all benefits

Have you ever tried something like Trekking Treez?

Why is it only old greying men that go for hammocks? Except for me. Once again, like most categories, I buck the trend. I’ve been a hammock camper since forever (big shoutout to Hennessy hammocks, they’re the best by far) but in the constant journey to go ultralight and ultralighter I’m looking forward to dumping the rigging weights and get a dcf trekking pole tent. Once upon a time hammocks were lightest option but not anymore and rely on camping below the tree line so a tent gives more versatility too.

Many hammocks can also be set up as a spacious ground bivy as well. Best of both worlds to me.
