That would just change an on the edge act of war into a BLATANT one. Flying a drone into a legally stated exclusion zone is already an act of war, albeit a weak one. But if USA intentionally destroys a Russian aircraft, there's no longer any question, USA has ATTACKED Russia. And boy will that piss off China among MANY others. On the final pass that resulted in impact, you'll notice the jet deliberately came from below the drone, and CLIMBED up into and above the drone, causing it's airspeed to decrease, and the controls of the jet to become less effective, due to lower air speeds across the controlling surfaces. The pilot miscalculated his airspeed, too slow, in an attempt to really drown the drone with a larger dose of fuel for a longer period of time, it's airspeed being much slower from the climb. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if that jet was close to stalling speed and didn't get enough lift from the wings with such a low throttle setting.

Dear Binkov, First, you're taking for granted that that US drone was delivering ISR services to Ukraine. This is not correct; we don't know what that drone's mission was. As a matter of fact, in view of its location and capabilities, it is more likely that it was NOT doing that. Maybe, it was providing situational awareness concerning the maritime traffic in the Black Sea. Or, maybe, it was just flying on a "freedom of movement" mission, to test airspace access. Second, you're concluding that the Russian pilot collided with the US drone accidentally. Maybe it was an accident, maybe it wasn't; "accidentally" implies he acted with negligence, which is defined as "a gross deviation from a normal standard of care". I don't think this is the case here. The pilot's actions indicate HE INTENDED to harm the drone. This means he was aware that his actions could probably cause damage to the drone, and HE ACCEPTED that eventuality. This is a different state of mind and degree of culpability.

This isn't the first time Russia (and China) harass US assets in International airspace (and Waters). The last such action that created a major international incident was when China's fighter collided with a US Navy P3 Orion in the South China Sea. Chinese fighter plane crashed and pilot died. Americans had to land in Hainan Island and were taken prisoner (later released). So colliding your aircraft with another aircraft is usually suicidal. Russia wants to end this war, but they can't, without a change in leadership (probably through violence). They're at a point of no return, and quickly going down a long path of humiliating defeat and complete isolation. So they can only harass NATO assets near Russian theater of operations and nothing else. US is being smart not to respond forcefully. Why beat on Russia when they're already down and beaten....best to give them a way out without collapsing the entire Russian Federation into a sordid mess. Then we will have bigger problems.

As you rightly say, we will know the intent of the truly higher ups if it keeps happening, ie. at a minimum they haven't put the kibosh on that action. Russia said, initially, that they didn't hit it, which was stupid, because you can clearly see the prop damage afterward in the video. US Global Hawk strategic drones no longer fly over the Black Sea after the incident with the Reaper UAV. The last time the Global Hawk flew off the Crimean coast was on March 21, although earlier, during Russia's invasion of Ukraine, these UAVs made eight to 10 reconnaissance flights per month over the Black Sea. From March 21 to April 20, the Global Hawk flew three times within Romanian airspace over that sea at a distance of more than 400 km from Crimea (the range of its radar stations is 200 km). The Global Hawk flew on March 17 and March 21 at a distance of no more than 140 kilometres from the southern coast of Crimea. The United States considered a further continuation of flights in this area inopportune since at such a distance, the amount of information received by the UAV is drastically reduced and there is a danger of losing the Global Hawk, which is several times more expensive than the Reaper and it is saturated with the most advanced equipment.

It was international airspace, and the Reaper drone had every right to fly. The Black Sea is not owned by Russia; it is also surrounded by NATO countries like Turkey, Bulgaria, and Romania. For me, there's a couple of factors in the calm response from the US: firstly, Russian Air Force planes have been regularly buzzing NATO ships and aircraft for some time now, pretty much since Russia got involved in Syria, so it's likely the USAF is used to these kind of encounters. Given the very low average of hours a Russian Air Force pilot gets, a misjudgement in a close pass was fairly inevitable, and the video suggests it was very much a case of incompetence rather than intent. The other factor is that I understand the US does not look at UAVs in the same way as manned aircraft. Sure, it's annoying that a valuable asset has been destroyed, but Reapers are hardly top-tier kit and the pilot isn't at risk. If we were talking about a manned recon mission, I suspect the US response would be more severe. And as I say, this looks very much like rank incompetence exposed while trying to engage in run-of-the-mill posturing and chest beating. Honestly, the whole incident reflects very poorly on the ability of Russia and its pilots and I've seen very little from Russia since the clip was released, which speaks volumes itself; Russia can't really say anything without looking 'weak'.

Russia has a history of harassing US and NATO assets in US and international airspace/territories. Just take a look at US interception of Russian aircraft off the Alaskan Coast. Or buzzing NATO naval assets around the black sea and baltics. Granted, this one is only significant because of it geographic proximity to Ukraine. While this is a more coordinated effort, I wouldn't be surprised if the squadron commander was like "well top brass says we need to harass it without taking it down, so here's how it's going to go". Deliberate or not, the only important part is Russia downed a US UAV off the Ukrainian coast due to a pilot's lack of skill.......by the Russian pilot. 10/10
