Why having a fish hook in a survival bag is not a good idea

A short video showing why having a fish hook in a survival kit isn't a good idea.
Take a stout knife and learn how to make things from the wilderness instead. You can always make a fish trap later on if you find a suitable body of water. A frog spear is a much better tool than a fish hook as it is easy to make from natural materials and you are much more likely to find frogs than fish.

I mostly agree with you, but there are a lot of fish to be had in the waters of the Midwest. I've used a hobo reel and caught fish. Keep it up , we love your videos!

And that is so true, or people take fish hooks and only about 10ft of line if that, absolutely useless LOL. That's so right, learn how to hunt because there's no room for guessing.

I can barely catch a fish on a nice day at a known location when it doesn't make any difference. I wouldn't want to risk my life on the delusional belief that I could catch one in a life or death situation. Better to eat whatever bait you were going to use and build a fire to cook it in.

@@tjsogmc LOL! yeah these arm chair survivalists think that fishing is easy, it's also hunting and no flukes unless you want to starve. I have an uncle who was a professional fisherman and he decided that he could survive by fishing and exchanging fish for all that he needed to survive on a house boat. Eg petrol for the boat, food etc. He managed to do it for 2 years non stop but every waking moment and sleeping moment he hd lines set to firstly catch enough to eat and trade and keep the boat afloat.

@@BushCampingTools back in ancient times fishing was done either with a net or traps. It was a methodical farming type of process that maximized the catch at a minimum of calorie expenditure. "Survival " is an entirely different concept that implies a temporary situation in which the objective is to be found and rescued in a minimum amount of time. In this scenario, lighting a fire is your number one priority regardless of the environment or season. A fire will alert any rescuer to your location and can be seen for miles through a thermal imager. Fire provides protection from wild animals, gives warmth, and is a huge psychological advantage. Food you can get on without for a few days. The priority is water, fire and rescue.

@@tjsogmc Absolutely! In fact when we were often out bow hunting in some very very rugged country, like had to use maps a full days walk away from the car. we also took in out bag a fish net of about 20ft long and over a yard deep (it weighed nothing and folded took up zero room (it was not weighted), because we knew that there were many creeks with trout and if we got stranded, (we had radios and communicated back to the homestead), we could (and did sometimes for fun) reliably catch trout in the worst case scenario, no mucking around with fish hooks, flys, fly rods LOL, not if you want to eat. As u say the minimal expenditure of energy. That's why I showed years ago a realist shelter o build in the tropics, not some elaborate BS that no one in their right mind would expend energy to do so (unless made for TV LOL).
