If God knows all, creates all, then he knows who is going to hell and who isn't. You cannot have free will from God if he set things up that way. He knows your path before you were born. Hell IS a threat. God says if you don't do what I say, I will hurt you. That's a threat. If I have a gun and I rob a bank, and I say the teller has a choice with their free will to choose to obey me or disobey me, that's a choice made under duress

God didn't have to create anything at all. Then we wouldn't have a hell at all.

That's not a real choice. That's like telling your child they have the choice to do whatever they want, but you'll only feed them if they do exactly what you say. That is not a choice offered in good faith. If God created Hell, then he created the threat he so generously offers to save people from in the first place. That seems pretty evil to me.

More accurately, it’s like telling your kids that you’ve provided an all expense paid trip to Disney World, but they say, “Nah, I’m good. I hate Disney and whoever designed it. I am staying back.” Naturally, every reasonable parent would respond, “I already paid your way, and you would love Disney. It’s the happiest place on earth! What’s wrong with you? But, I won’t force you.”

ok , nice strawman, asserting that atheists hate heaven and god . see , you first have to conceive this in your arrogant, ignorant christian brain . we atheists don't believe in your hogwash, so we don't hate your heaven or your god !! one can't hate something that one doesn't believe exists. got it ?!!

@@ActualFaith There are several flaws that some people see in the concept of the Christian view of heaven so some people such as agnostics and atheists would prefer to rest instead of continuing to have their life only serving and glorifying the lord, not be themselves (because there is no sin in heaven and a lot of what people do on earth is considered sinful which means god would have to eradicate some features of a person to enter heaven), or live in distress knowing that someone close to them is being tormented for eternity. So it's a lot more like "Hey son! I got you tickets to Disney world where you'll have to dedicate all your life to mickey mouse, be there for a very very long time until pure boredom starts to kick in since we have done literally everything there is to do!!!" and if the child replies "uhh... no thanks... you know i don't even like Disney world" the father will reply "Oh that's alright son, I respect you and give you free choice... buuuuuuttt i if you don't go to Disney world I'll have you get whooped by your uncle for a really long time just like your brother who also rejected!!!.... ah see? I'm so good at giving you free will...."

Let get this straight. Jesus never talked about Hell. He talked about Gehenna. Hades and Hell are both pagan things. Christianity stole those things from Greek and Norse mythology.

While Tertullian, John Chrysostom, and Augustine were certainly imaginative in their descriptions of hell, the Bible itself only briefly references it outside of prose and parables. I don't believe it's fair for atheists to judge the merits of a first century book based on third and fourth century commentary. Whenever the Bible speaks of the World to Come, it points unflinchingly to the Resurrection … not spirit hotels, hells or purgatories.

Interesting comment Christopher. I am wondering would you add that a lot of what we imagine about hell comes from Dante's writings as well? Or did he base his ideas from the people you listed (I am not good with timelines and who wrote first etc)?

@@mattyskilling4522 Dante synthesized many influences together: pre-Christian mythology, midevil demonology, and the teachings of the aforementioned church fathers. I think you’re right on the money identifying him as a popularizer of contemporary Hellish imagery. The Divine Comedy was meant to be satire. I doubt he had any intention that it would/should shape views on the afterlife.

@@maxamahnken7325 I hope you understand Hell is not a joke just look around what Isaiah 14:9-11 says (KJV) Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us? Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.

@@hp_0189 Hell as being some old English word that simply means the grave ------ sheol or hades. The common grave ------ not some place of ever burning, fiery torment. However Christ using the Greek Gehenna to describe some future Lake of Fire that would burn the wicked to ashes ------ not torment them for forever to forever. That fire is not burning today ------ but shall burn in the future. To the biblical writers understood that hell simply meaning the grave. And ------ they describing it poetically. Not as some existing reality that torments/tortures sinners for forever and ever.
