I think it also has to do something with where green is on the color spectrum. And it's just easy for people to notice different shades of green So If there's trees behind it, the signs still stands out even if it's just a slightly different shade. Because the human eye can detect more colors of green than any other color. Correct me if im wrong.

Right! Red is more like "alarming" and you had to really paid more attention, the green colour is considered calm and steady. Also all of this signs are always using sans-serif font text because its more clean and less distracting to read for most people rather than serif (this applies too for all public places font 😊)

For me in Malaysia, green road signs mean it is a highway (lebuhraya), blue road signs meaning it is a road (jalan). However, federal routes can be alternatives to highways, for example, 68 (federal road number) Jalan Gombak (place) - Bentong (place). Also road colours can stack for example if you are in a federal route that has 1 km left to go to a highway, it will have a blue sign and inside it will have a green highway sign.
