They made the change regularly in rules. Like for example there was offside rule similar to offside rule of football but they scrapped it. They many rules which promoted skilled based hockey or you can orthodox hockey. They promoted fast hitting game. From 70 minutes to 60 minutes they made the change very quick and people got confused which is also the reason of downfall. The blunder they did was they also scrapped extra time and golden goal rule. Golden goal was the main attraction of hockey in extra time. According to this rule whichever team scores a goal in a extra time the team wins there and match is stopped even if there is time remaining. I can understand there is a need to change some of rules according to time but they did it very quick and they made many changes just to favour Europeans as they were not able to compete with India and Pakistan

As a cricket fan i really want hockey to become popular ,even though cricket is played by very few nations, cricket is very popular in subcontinent and cricketers are widely recognised. But even in india hockey players do not have that recognition , this scenario has to change . With proper marketing and establishment of franchise leagues like ipl(cricket) and( epl) in footbal,l hockey can boost its popularity . It is the closest sport to football in terms of similarity. hope in coming years fih would take some measure s to increase the popularity of this beautiful sport. A point you skipped is that hockey failed to make itself a brand like what IPL did for cricket. When the only excitement for hockey is the olympics and not even the world cup the interest will naturally fade. Even the NHL turned ice hockey into a brand. Those who know nothing about ice hockey would still know that NHL exists, where it is played and how the kits look. Those who know nothing about cricket still know about IPL and Virat Kohli. There is no story involved in hockey, no stars to celebrate, no marketing, no innovation and nothing to make it look entertaining and engaging.

Another reason of hockey not popular in world is the abolish off off side rule in hockey . When there was an off side rule the matches were very close interesting in most matches teams won with just 2-3 goals . After off side rule was abolished most of matches are one sided strong teams won with a score of 8-0 11-0 13-1 like
