I manage a corporate jet AOG maintenance facility based out of SoCal. I cover Alaska to Panama. I do not see very many Honda Jets. I feel that there is a big marketing hype and push on these. They are a novelty. Being rated for single pilot and getting insured for single pilot are two entirely different things. Bombardier, Cessna, Dassault, Gulfstream and Embraer dominate the market. If NetJets doesn't operate them that says a lot.

You have a point about the existing market. What the video alludes to is that the hondajet could open jet aviation up to people who would otherwise not fly private; if jet based GA were to tripple as a result of only having to have 1 pilot (further impacted by the current pilot shortage) there will be a lot of money to be had.
@sblack482 жыл бұрын
@@Kingmeri citation mustang and eclipse are also single pilot so there is nothing unique there. It’s marketing wank and like I said, everyone does it. “This product will revolutionize” (insert industry of choice - aircraft, shaver, dish soap etc). The thing I learned in industry is that there is ABSOLUTELY NO CONNECTION between the marketing people and the engineers who developed the aircraft. In fact having engineers around, who have a terrible habit of being factual, is a marketing guy’s worst nightmare. The salons of Paris, Farnborough, EBACE, NBAA are populated with slick handsome dudes in nice suits with great haircuts. No engineers in sight. I remember Honda presented their mockup Prototype Honda Jet at arther whitfield airport in saint pete florida back in like 05 during the festivals of speed. It was amazing, and in knew Honda had a hit on their hands. Theirs was nothing quite like it at the time. Creating an all new market withing the private light jet aircraft market. No it couldnt fly fully cross country, but it could do considerable long distant hops with much of the speed and comfort of aircraft much larger costing several times as much. It was an all new sector and it would attract alot of attention for potential buyers, and low and behold it didnt dissapoint when all was said and done. And now Honda has upped the ante several fold, with their Honda Jet 2600, who's specs are an industry gamechanger even greater than the original honda jet. Here is an aircraft that accomplishes the goal once again at a fraction of the cost of its larger more lavish competitors. Once again accomplishing ones required goals without breaking the bank. Here is one that many sectors and airlaines would love to see in their fleet lineups. and did i mention coast to coast traveling range!!!!

I too like fly by wire, with a mechanical back up, and I like to keep the yoke, it is a transport category plane, not a fighter. For those who still think of Honda's engineering etc, maybe you are not aware since the last of the 2 founders died, Honda been taken over by risk averse accountants. They are not as leading edge as they used to be, at least their cars. The single pilot concept is strictly to do with how much automation , regulations and basic risk management. Just because the plane is rated for single pilot, does not mean the insurance will make it easy to fly alone. You can take off with a 747/400 alone if you have to, but you be very busy, as long as you push all the right buttons. The jet market is not so easy to dominate, since engine technologies (and avionics) are a tightly held secret in all countries. What ever price advantage can only be the result of the airframe. Right now, I feel the Brazilians had a lot of savings they have not passed on to buyers. I am not sure I prefer the PC24, it is over 100mph slower than other jets, except the single engine one. The PC 12 is just 30 mph slower than the competitor, the TBM 900, that I accept.
@justhecuke2 жыл бұрын
I think there's a little bit of confusion here. The Honda Jet 2600 is planned to be single pilot certified for commercial flights. As in, you can use the jet to take paying customers around with only a single pilot. With a 747/400, that is not the case. Even though it is physically possible to fly it with a single pilot, it would be illegal to do so if you're doing so commercially. As for engine technologies and avionics being tightly held secrets, you are incorrect w.r.t. the commercial market. You can buy engines and avionics off the shelf. They aren't secrets. It's actually pretty rare for a jet company to use engines that they also make and, as far as I'm aware, all of the competition is using engines and avionics bought from other companies. As for the price advantage, you're missing the single-pilot aspect which makes it more palatable for small charter companies who don't need to keep as many pilots around making scheduling and such much easier. It also makes it easier for an individual owner to fly the jet as they don't have to hire a co-pilot. And just simplifying the price advantage to "the airframe" is sort of missing the point: the airframe is basically the entire plane. Of course the price advantage is going to be in the airframe. It'd be weird if it weren't the case.

So Honda Jet is far from being a hit in the market. They got some sales in the last 3 years because of price and not because the airplane is popular. Embraer is actually much more popular, and it is a company that has been in airplane markets for more than 50 years with the best customer support. Just in 2019 Cirrus sold 81 aircraft against 39 Honda Jet. The reality is that comparing to its competitors Honda Jet has been struggling. Honda has a nice airplane, but you shouldn't mislead people that it is popular. In the last two years the sales were far below the competitors. Embraer holds the official favorite title with more than 600 airplanes sold in this light jet market.

Why do they think of engines from GE or Rolls Royce. Those two brands provide superior performance and are super reliable. The cost maybe of an issue, but we are talking aviation expenses and as everyone knows those are never low.
@justhecuke2 жыл бұрын
Well, the jet engines were made in a GE-Honda partnership, so it would be weird if Honda went and bought a different GE engine to replace the one that they made together. Honda is an expert at making reliable, cheap engines. I think Honda thinks they have a competitive advantage compared to companies that have to outsource their engines since Honda presumably has lots of in-house experience customizing engines for specific applications. The Honda Jet 2600 engine is likely to be engineered specifically for the Honda Jet 2600 which can potentially allow for greater efficiencies than something bought off the shelf and modified for use. One thing to keep in mind is that Honda claims that their existing jet engine is more efficient, less costly, and easier to maintain that competitor's engines. From anecdotal evidence, this appears to be the case although I don't have real numbers handy. With this in mind, why use someone else's engines if Honda's is already better in the ways that matter?
