I was 13 on the day of the handover. My take is, if you really preferred the British flag, you will never be happy with Hong Kong. The fact that Britain left Hong Kong with all sorts of unresolved long-term problems like housing policy and the loss of trade monopoly, I suspect that those details do not matter much to you. It's better to just move to Britain and be British, than to remain in a place that you wish was British--that ship sailed, literally, 25 years ago with Lord Patten and Prince Charles on it. I cried on the day of the handover too. But as I grew up I realised that even before the handover, Hong Kong was already beginning to lose its special economic position. And over 150 years, not a single democratically elected governor. I came to a comprehensive understanding of what colonial Hong Kong was, and what it was not. We (to be accurate, our parents) enjoyed incredible economic growth, but only as byproducts of Britain's desire to exploit China. For me at least, it's time to move on from that history, keep what was good and fix the bad. As China probably wants us to do. For reference, see how the local big 3 tycoons have fallen out of favour with Beijing as they are viewed as one of the key root causes of HK's unrest. Even if we don't agree ideologically, I wish you well and stay safe whether you are in HK or UK.
