The younger generations of Hong Kong have no clue what it is like growing up in the West. The drug problem in the West is much more deep rooted and many petty crimes to heavier crimes are the result. Going out at night as an skinny Asian guy or girl for that matter, its like you have a big target on your head. You get insults thrown at you or robbed or worse stabbed. You have no clue what freedom is till you lose it. I found my freedom here almost 30yrs ago. its peace. peace of mind, when I go out, I don't have to be afraid for my safety. Sure there are crimes in Hong Kong, but its nothing if you compare it. If you people do not like Hong Kong, please go, there are plenty of others who will come in your place. Hong Kong has always been that way, people come, people go.

There are situations on the streets in for instance Europe indeed where thugs smell money on you. I’m sure that the UK isn’t particularly different in that case. I’ve been traveling the East a lot lately and I felt ridiculously safe on the streets at all hours of the day. HK was a total vibe back in ‘17. I would like to visit mainland China someday!

I was from Taiwan and i learned a lot about how the west have Been an imperialist colonized many other countries for their own interests only by using human lives to exchange for that power and wealth. China's opium war has made China lost Hong Kong to Britain for 99 years. People are basically slavery to the West and being poor for all these years. I am sad about Chinese people has been educated by the West and not aware about their chinese history past. I hope this family one day will realize they're better off living in Hong Kong or China than living in the west because China is rising now and people's life is better now more than the West.

Why didn't you see it the other way, which is that, those who went abroad, sacrificed for you guys as well.. and managed to "equalise" some form of peace, so that you guys stopped. They also stopped. So how come you know about this piece of history, but you don't know about the Cuban crisis ? That is, the so called.. " South American nuclear programmes" ?.... If that went off, you would not be alive today. And yet, you guys literally embraces, ALL of those descendents of the Spanish... and claim them as if they are your own children, and you don't think that would provoke even more emotions from the likes of us, here abroad? I had no idea about the relationship piece there. USA contained those individuals and those people. they jailed them for a long long time.. to keep their promises not to trigger a nuclear war. So.... And yet.. today... some people in HK are selfish, arrogant, and a bit of a dipstick.. cos all they know is about the "land grabbing" piece.. They had no idea about the "what went on in the world across the world... and why did we lose some of our chinese people abroad".... Kind of thing... She has seen it from the wrong angle. imho...

I am a BBC, British born Chinese, residing in hong kong . It is nearly impossible in england to secure a job as a Chinese individual, especially more challenging if you are not BBC. The British exhibit a strong preference for hiring individuals of their own race first. Families from Hong Kong relocating to England for settlement will find their children facing a grim future with minimal job prospects. London offers slightly better job opportunities, but the cost of living is exorbitant, coupled with a hefty 40% tax rate on a decent income. As a Chinese individual, you will always receive lower wages compared to your white counterparts. The British society harbors deep-seated racism, though they mask it behind a facade of politeness. I relocated to Hong Kong from England and have established my base here. Traveling the world has become a reality for me, a path that would have been closed off had I stayed in England. Hong Kong emerges as a beautiful and secure city to call home. Having experienced China, I can attest to its ultra-safe environment. Even within China, life is far more favorable than in England, especially for families. Seeking freedom in England is futile; it is a mere illusion. Once employed, a significant portion of your earnings is siphoned off by the government. From housing to basic necessities, everything incurs heavy taxation, leaving you with meager financial resources by month-end. Essentially, you toil for the government, which exerts control over every aspect of your life. This is not freedom but rather a form of Western-style dictatorship. The thought of returning to England for permanent residence is inconceivable to me. Hong Kong residents have been pampered like children and fail to appreciate the superior lifestyle they enjoy here. Freedom and opprrtunities does not exist in england , its pure frabrication.

These idiots don't understand that true happiness comes from within. You can't just move to a Western country and suddenly be happy. They think the West is some sort of magical land where you get nice stuff for free and don't have to work for it. Immigrants are foolish people IMO (and that applies to all immigrants from every country). They abandon their country, their family, their friends etc. to seek happiness when they can't even realise that moving overseas won't automatically bring happiness. Immigrants love instant gratification.

I was born and raised in Hong Kong. During the riot, some Hong Kong people were yearning for living in the "air of freedom". I called these people naive at the time as these HK people didn't realize what they miss in HK. You still have to deal with the basic need of life, a job, a place to stay. I would argue it's much tougher abroad as their education or work experience is not recognized. Only a minority of Hong Kong people hold western post undergrad degree and worked in international companies. They have to deal with a new language as most HK people have bad English. To be honest, western democracy is a joke as politicians work for the big organizations. I have been living in Canada for the last 30 years. You thought you can choose, but you really don't.

@@polpojliekwanjaroen3511 HK used to be able to talk fairly openly even against Beijing before the riot which honestly was out of control. In US and Canada, you never want to talk politics in public. You always have to say things political correct. So in Christmas, I say happy holiday instead of merry Christmas. And about protest in US and Canada, I suggest you look at the freedom convoy and Washington Trump protest. The protestors in US and Canada were nothing compared to the violence in the HK protestors.
@polpojliekwanjaroen3511
@polpojliekwanjaroen3511 6 ай бұрын
@johnnymars9782 The law enforcing political correctness is controlling and annoying, that I can agree of. Western society became overly sensitive about racism, gender, and discrimination. Still, it's vastly different from law enforcing in China. In the US, Canada, UK, etc., you certainly can talk about how the government is incompetent, protests about the new railway, mocking the monarchs, etc. There are several documentaries informing about how things are wrong in those countries, and you can always look those up even if you live in one of those countries. The same thing cannot be done in China. So it's unfair to make such an inaccurate comparison and implying that Western countries have law enforcing freedom of speech to the same extent as China. Regarding the protest in Hong Kong, they were violent for sure. But it would be naive to think that they are the sole reason for China NSL. The reason protest started in the first place was the proposed 2019 extradition bill. Even if the protest didn't start, China was aiming to reform the law and fredom of speech in Hong Kong anyway. It's only the question of when. Hong Kong is destined to be made into China's own image from the start, regardless of the 2019 protest.

@@polpojliekwanjaroen3511 Before the HK riot, HK people publicly booed the national anthem and received no penalty. The newspaper like Apple Daily can print whatever BS it wants. @johnnymars9782 I never ask whether HK can criticize the government before the riot, so I don't know what you were answering to. That NFL you said was due to public punishment, not by law, so it's still inaccurate to compare that incident to HK. If you think it isn't fair, then it's the problem with their employer, not the law or government. Imo, however, I don't see any problem booing or don't stand for national anthems since it doesn't hurt anybody. If any government put someone in jail for it then that's quite a problem

The struggle for immigrants is not confined to post-industrial areas of the UK but is international for new arrivals seeking to establish themselves. The UK is far from perfect but if it is an opportunity for these families then I think most countries would welcome hardworking legal immigrants like these. Personally, I wish them all luck in their journey - I have employment-immigrated to three countries and the early days of struggle must be seen as an investment.

Whereas most Chinese people value safety/stability which I thought was dumb. But now as a second gen American Chinese, I'm looking to migrate out of this shit hole and see the value in the Chinese way of life, where China is safe, there's no shootings, muggings (not at the rate of the west), mass shootings, wondering if I'll be hate crimed for looking Asian.

The main issue here is really not the location. It does not matter whether they are in Britain, the US, Canada, Australia or even Latin America. The problem here is the couple does not love each other anymore. They have turned into somebody that the other person does not like. Not all couples will face situation in which their true self will come out. Whether it is money or unemployment or sickness or a new love. Chinese people are brave in the sense that they will go anywhere to look for opportunities. But we are also very peculiar by wanting to keep our "Chineseness" intact and are resistant to "go native". It is very easy to saw that people have a deep seated racism or prejudices to "new comers" but it is also true that new comers will not accept the "natives". We end up with our little groups and want to recreate the old country in our new country. Life is hard anywhere and everywhere. If you don't know the language or the custom or want to integrate; you are starting at a disadvantage. It is really not about race, it is really about skills and communication.

@18:08 "They've got bigger houses than me!" Hongkongers who own any kind of property in HK will be able to buy a 4 bedroom detached house in a decent area in the UK. One such area is Warrington where Hongkongers are mopping up new-builds like hot cakes. In fact if you ask a taxi driver to take you to 'Little Hong Kong' he'll know exactly where to go. The influx of Hong Kongers into Warrington is so high that the Local Council have to enlarge or build new schools to accommodate their children. I often wonder if China is as authoritarian and restrictive as we are made to believe, how is it that Hong Kongers are allowed to take millions of $ out of Hong Kong? @@Jomo-x6nThe answer is : No, it’s not. Most of those people who left HK had never even been to the mainland because they had been convinced that China was this terrible repressive place, so they would refuse to even visit. Just take a moment to digest that ! They were thoroughly indoctrinated : the British colonial government had intentionally left China a poison pill. The textbooks beginning in the 90s all said that China had no freedom and was a totalitarian state. In 2019, just before the riots, only 20% of HK youth between the ages of 18 and 25 said they were prepared to work or live in China. By 2023, this number had shot up to 66%. After those who were so opposed to the Chinese government without even having visited the mainland had left, young people remaining in HK became normalised and much more rational. Those people leaving was like having the poison drawn from HK’s psyche.

The concept of "the grass over the other side is Greener" is always there for majority of the people around the world but is NOT always true. Once you go to the other side, you'll find out it could be worse than you initially perceived. UK is already going downhill economically even without Hong Kongers there and could be one of the 2 countries which will have economic disasters in these coming short years, the other one is Germany. Hong Kongers will gradually be reaching a Catch 22 situation in UK, you can't go back to HK with nothing in hand or stay on in UK to suffer. I left the U.K for Hong Kong six years ago. It is so much safer, better run and an overall higher quality of life in HK. People who haven't lived in the UK won't understand that it is a hugely corrupt and failing country. The government regularly screws the people over, I mean just look at the tainted blood scandal where the government covered up the fact thousands of people were given blood imported from the U.S and infected with HIV and Hepatitis to avoid payouts. Or Grenfell where nearly 80 people died in a fire because they were undesirable so multiple health and safety warnings from residents were ignored. Honestly look up the UK government's Prevent programme that regularly interrogates children just because they went to a protest with their parents, or are sympathetic to green activism. About three years ago the Home Secretary even ordered the police to raid an art gallery and seize artwork all because it was used during a Stop The Oil march. Then look at the race riots. The UK government criticised HK for putting politics above the rule of law, but itself arrested people for posting on Facebook and jailing them for longer than armed robbers, all within 5 days when the average court proceedings is six months. Freedom of Speech in the UK is a mere illusion, and you have it until it is inconvenient for the government. Then violent crimes is on the rise and drugs is out of control. In the same period of us moving to HK, violent crimes have gone up 49% in the UK, particularly those involving weapons, and rapes have gone up almost 15%. In that same period violent crimes have gone down in HK. Plus the crime detection rate in the UK is incredibly poor, less than 10% versus almost 80% in HK. Healthcare in the UK is just broken. People in HK complain about waiting for four hours at A&E... My mum's friend was in A&E with chest pains after being discharged from heart surgery, and waited 36 hours to be seen!! Elderly ladies that have fallen at home are waiting over 12 hours for help. Then the pension system is a ticking time bomb, although now with the law requiring private pensions it is slightly better. Now is a slightly controversial topic and that is nationality. Yes the UK passport allows you to go visa free to many countries... But not for much longer. From 2025 there will no longer be visa free access to Europe for UK passport holders like we have today. And also every time war breaks out, the UK always evacuated its embassy and consular staff before telling everyone to leave on their own means. Forget about an evacuation, rarely comes and often weeks or months after they evacuated their own. It's not like China that will literally send a warship to take you to safety. Honestly I'm so glad we moved. It has opened our eyes also to the world. The BBC is answerable to the government and the British media in general are biased. People don't realise the government and rich people often apply for gagging orders and D notices, meaning many scandals never get reported.

The Hong Kong protests that began in 2019 actually only showed that Hong Kong's capitalist system has not improved or enhanced the lives of Hong Kong citizens. Of course there have been the complaints. How can a society where wealth and resources are monopolized by the 1% of the rich benefit the people? The West now is the same. Therefore, Hong Kong people are just like spoiled babies by the Chinese leaders of the mainland. Hong Kong people were wrongly targeted to mainland. What they should oppose is Hong Kong's capitalist system. The socialist mainland with one country and one system has made everyone's housing bigger and bigger, wages higher and higher, and life better and better... Capitalist Hong Kong has made Hong Kong people's living environment worse and worse, and they are stretched to the limit. For a long time, more than two million (nearly 50%) of Taiwan's elites have physically "climbed over the wall" and ran to the mainland to work and live happily. They have cast their best votes with their feet. How could they condescend to leave their happy homeland of "Asian democracy model" - Taiwan, just for such a small amount of money, and rush to the "ruthless and bloody" Communist "dictatorship" ruled area! ? The increasing development and progress of mainland society and people have completely destroyed the superiority and arrogance that Hong Kong and Taiwanese people used to have over mainlanders. Faced with the continuous prosperity of the mainland, those stubborn and brain colonized Hong Kong and Taiwanese people can only sigh in despair.

Hong Kong is still a good place to live given its remarkable infrastructure, amazing peace and order, low tax rates and the absence of corruption

I don't blame them for leaving if that was 35 years ago. But now I say they are putting their children and their lives in jeopardy.

No More jobs for overseas workers in uk : “It’s not fair when cheap labor from overseas undercuts British workers. To protect them, we will cut cheap overseas labor. That is reducing the salaries of British workers. We will prioritise British employment first over overseas employment, and will ensure that only the best and brightest are taken from overseas that can contribute to the growth of our economy. All companies should therefore employ British workers first before any overseas worker. This will help protect the British people and meet up with what they want.” Home Secretary James Cleverly

Except hong kongers are not oversees.They are British the same as gibralteriqns and falklanders are.We look after our own..they deserve help of uk unlike free loading hostile immigrants from places with no connection to uk.

But the UK accepted too many so called rich mainlanders even if they will never be loyal to the UK and King and even be enemies of the UK at all time! Real HKers were/are loyal to the UK and GB from Queen Victoria era to Queen Elizabeth II and now King Charles!

Yeah - I wondered about that as well. They are the foreigners, not the English....

I asked some colleagues how the national security law and China’s takeover has impacted them and all they could tell me was about how opposing voices were silenced like that rag apple daily. Only other thing tangible was that their kids would get demerit points if they didn’t stand straight enough for the national anthem. Not a single person could tell me how things are tangibly worse. But they all want to leave due to the uncertainty. Cantonese people in HK are something else. All I can say is Stockholm syndrome.
