the log yard is looking so good! and wow those are some nice looking logs! Great info on sealing!!

Thank you... we're working hard trying to get the rest of the log yard cleaned up... hopefully by the end of the year so we can focus on milling!

I'm glad I came across this video. I'll be removing a large silver maple this winter and wanted to save some rounds to be turned into bowls later and give the rest to a processor. I'll get some sealer and supplies on hand as soon as they cut my tree.

Great idea, did it work?

I remember watching a documentary that had a lumberyard in Japan. The lumber was transported down a river and stored in the river until it could be milled. Kinda cool

So important! Keeps the ends from getting really hard as they season, which is no Fun for the sawmill. I like to take a lumber crayon and label the log species, width and length on the ends before I seal them too!

I need to get some lumber crayons... great Idea on labeling the logs... when there gets to be so many logs in the log yard... hard to keep track of all of them in your head!

After milling the logs, do you need to put another layer of Anchorseal on the ends of the slabs or should it be fine how it is? Also do you treat your wood for bugs in some way when your air drying the slabs? I don't have any access to a kiln so just wondering how to get rid of and prevent any bugs.

That roller makes quick work of it, but I still like to brush it on, let’s you get a good look at the grain and start to plan how to mill it.
@WorkshopatTheGardens4 жыл бұрын
Agreed... it's the artist with in you that wants to start studying the grain of the log... to find the true beauty in the logs... however it is applied Anchorseal is the way to go because it dries clear... one of the reasons I'll never use latex paint, you can't see the grain.

Hey Glen - this was super helpful - wondering for that end table - I'm working on a similar project with a cedar stump - will the Anchorseal or Lee Valley end sealer sand off easy or will I need to cut the stump down in size once dried? Thanks so much!
@WorkshopatTheGardens3 жыл бұрын
from my experience you can sand it off but the may take quite a bit of time and materials. i think it would be better to cut or router off the end to start working with the stump once dry.

Do you seal both ends of the log or cookies if you have those as well? Please let me know. Thanks Dave

Hi There =) QQ - I just brought home a big stump/log cut that I came across from a tree being cut down in my neighbourhood. I want to use it as a side table as is. I think it was probably cut down a week ago (?). Aside from sealing the ends with Anchor Seal, is there anything else I should do? Or a different product I should use. I’d like the ends to be matte and as close to its natural look as possible. And anything you could suggest so the bark doesn’t fall off/dry out?.. I have no wood knowledge lol. Thank you so much! 🙏🏼

Can you seal the side of it too if you are using them as outdoor stools as is?
@TheHiddenHomestead3 жыл бұрын
That’s some nice big wood! And I agree, I don’t think that 25 bucks is expensive at all especially considering the benefits
@InkSplatter4463 жыл бұрын
Can you still cut the log after it’s been anchorsealed? Or will cutting through the seal with a chainsaw/mill dull the blade?
@WorkshopatTheGardens3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Anchorseal is an emulsified paraffin... it's wax and will have no effect on any blades it comes in contact with.

Is Anchor seal weather proof if I use it and leave stump to beog chairs for yard?
@roryrice87423 жыл бұрын
Is one coat enough?
@WorkshopatTheGardens3 жыл бұрын
one coat is generally enough. UC Coating, the manufacturer of Anchorseal, recommends a heavier coat or a second coat with in 15 minutes of the first coat on logs larger than 24" diameter.
@Actias1974 Жыл бұрын
instead of expensive anchorseal, use diluted wood glue . Works just as well.
@WorkshopatTheGardens Жыл бұрын
It does... I by in quantity so the price is similar. Plus I use Anchorseal 2 which is freeze proof, an added benefit for working in Minnesota. Thanks for checking out the vid and comment! Cheers!

Just in case anyone reads this. Love to use Anchorseal but here in the UK it can cost $140 for less than a quart. Still looking for an alternative please.
@WorkshopatTheGardens3 жыл бұрын
wow... that's steep price! have you tried the elmer's glue recipe? best to you!
@lloydr.62713 жыл бұрын
@@WorkshopatTheGardens Bought some waterproof exterior glue from local builders merchant and will try a slightly watered down mix. Will look for the recipe. Thanks.

@@WorkshopatTheGardens Where might I find the Elmers glue recipe bearing in mind I never saw this glue in UK?

@Lloyd, You could always use a latex based paint, even the cheaper brands will work. Hope that helps, good luck.
