I can say for sure swerving saved ma life. A huge mattress fell off a pickup in front of me. I don't even remember swerving, It was so automatic and muscle memory. Yes, Ladies and gentlemen Dan is 1000% correct when he say "swerving will save your life" learn it and keep practicing it until it becomes second nature. What every day on my ride home is swerve around manhole covers and pot holes that's very good practice.
@chrisb99604 жыл бұрын
I use manhole covers and potholes too. Only down side is if you are staying in your lane it's good practice for small objects. Using a parking space with lines (no curbs) for practice workers also. The lines stop around where Dan's blue cones were setup.

As a UK rider, this is extremely familiar and brings back memories. For those who don't know, in the UK (and europe I believe) In order to ride a "Big Bike" (Larger than 125cc), you must pass your CBT (Compulsory Basic Training). This allows you to ride a motorcycle up to 125cc in size, maximum of somewhere around 13-15bhpm, can't remember the specifics. The Module 1, an off road technical test to see how you control the bike on a specially prepared tarmacked training course. This is usually on a 600cc with around 70bhp but can vary due to what your age legally allows. You then have the Module 2, an on road test to see how you ride on the road with the general public in ordinary traffic. Once you have passed all 3 of these, you can ride a "big bike". There are lots of other things to take into account like your age which restricts the overall power you are legally allowed to ride, separated by A1, A2 and full A licence (yes, that is how you spell this type of licence). I digress.... In the UK Module 1 test, you have to perform this type of Hazard Performance test whereby you hit a speed of 50kph as you pass between a speed marker at the start of the maneuver. A lot of new riders struggle with high speed maneuvers like this potentially due to counter steering and having a good technic. I would suggest when you are setting off, you will naturally want to warm your tyres (again, correct spelling) anyway, so as you weave from side to side, let loose with your hands while still holding the handlebars and shift your bodyweight gently from side to side, get a feel for how your bike naturally wants to move. As you get better at feeling this, gradually start putting in your own manual input to speed it up, try this at a relatively low speed at about 20mph. As you get a feel for this, you are naturally building in that muscle memory required in a crisis situation. Ride safe! ✌️

Dan, great content as always. I just started riding about a week ago and your drills have been a huge help to gain confidence in handling the bike. I like how you put safety first and above all since city traffic can be so unpredictable. Thanks for the great work you put into your videos. Greetings from Mexico City.

DanDan, I love you brother and I have an advice for you. If it takes you 2 lengths of the motorcycle to break from 15 mph, then it's not looking good. You should be able to break in that length from at least 30 mph.

Thank you for your videos they are helping me a lot! But Sir ! the only thing that I am having difficulty with is that , IS SWERVING basically is counter-steering or it is a part of it ? 1) when we swerve then it really means that we are counter steering? 2) what is the difference between both? 3) is it okay if we counter to escape from a obstacle or do we have to swerve? Waiting for your reply😇

Swerving is in the MSF riding test. The instructor puts their arm out to tell you to go left or right. It's called pay attention. The most important lesson in riding.

Hey Dan, thanks for the content. I've been riding a few months now and I've mostly avoided watching crash footage because it scares the crap out of me. But my friend recommended you and I'm glad I started watching. I've learned a lot and your videos, like this one, give me a good idea of the things I need to be practicing to keep myself safe. I have a question about evasive maneuvers though. In a situation like the one at 4:45 in the video, I would hesitate to swerve because I'm not sure if the car is gonna stop in front of me or continue moving--right into where I'm swerving. How should I go about making the decision between swerving and braking?
@Mmyers11774 жыл бұрын
It depends on your level of situational awareness during an emergency situation. Survival Responses (SR’s) will occur less often if you are fully aware, keep a nice reactionary distance, have a plan of escape, act as if everyone is out to get you, signal your intentions, and watch “Twist of the wrist II” on KZbin!

I have a question: Earlier today, someone made a sudden left turn in front of me and cut me off so I swerved to the right. But the rider behind me (I don't know him btw) also swerved and overtook me on my right side, he was really close to me and even cut me off too. I panicked and grabbed the front brake, since I was swerving and the bike was already leaned, I ended up dropping the bike. What should I have done in that situation? Braking is out of the question since I've tried that.

@1:15 Don't brake and swerve at the same time. You'll loose tyre traction on braking itself. you got to save tyre traction for swerving.

@Firestorm6374 жыл бұрын
Even a car you able to brake and steer away. Before ABS, you worried about not locking your wheels by pumping your brakes. With auto ABS you can literally stand on your brake pedal and swerve. At least with cars, people do not apply enough brake so brake assist has been added. The computer can sense if panic stop and will apply more brake. On a motorcycle with cornering ABS you can use much more braking and swerve safely but must practice.

I very much do enjoy your video but with this one you have 2 types of swerving you showed one style using the handlebar but didn't show how using your hips and body more then just steering to avoid if I'm wrong please inform me I'm always willing to learn

So are you still technically counter-steering when you have to swerve going at least 12mph and up? And steering normally when you're going slower?
@brandoloudly94574 жыл бұрын
Sven Sharpsword you can feel your bike stabilize between 10 and 20 mph. That’s where contersteering becomes the mode of controlling your bike. Play with your handlebars while you gradually speeding up and slowing down to really experience the difference in handling and steering between these speeds

Guess who hammered this into my thick head? A judge, in court after I hit a kid on the road. The kid was ok, bruised but otherwise intact. The judge wrote in his judgment that a skilled rider knows how to swerve and if I don't know how to do that, I shouldn't be on the road. I was mad at him for a long time but slowly I saw the sense🙈
@sharpfluff22224 жыл бұрын
I feel the judge is slightly disconnected with reality. Passing of a motorcycle test or cbt legally permits you to be on the road. Of course these skills are essential and are not to be underestimated though so I do see your point.
@Daschickenify2 жыл бұрын
@@sharpfluff2222 I agree. If the techniques and expectations taught and expected of you in the motorcycle test are not sufficient to avoid a crash, then maybe start raising the bar for the tests. If that still didn't work, maybe the rider isn't at fault. Yes, it would be great to not hit a kid if you can avoid it, but at a certain point you have to assign blame where it is due, not just where it is politically correct.
