Why are you worried? What does the Bible say? "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." I suggest you start by asking her what she believes about Jesus. If she goes to Mass and participates, she already confesses that Jesus is Lord and that God raised him from the dead. If she believes that, what more do you want? What are you waiting for? I don't know your Grandma, but if her being Catholic is the only thing holding you back, I see no reason to wait.

I grew up PCUSA and after a long time away from church, I found myself in a PCA church. It’s a night and day difference. My old church was on the far left end of the spectrum. LGBT acceptance and female pastors were just the tip of the iceberg. They taught all sorts of heresies and blasphemies that are inconsistent with the Bible and the Westminster confession. Even though the Westminster confession is supposed to be the founding document of the church, I had literally never heard of it one time in my 18 years. They taught us that paganism is valid and had pagans come give a presentation to my youth group (also Muslims at one point). They taught us that the Bible is not perfect and a lot of it should be ignored. They said there is no hell and everyone on earth is automatically saved. Plus lots of political stuff. Jesus is a socialist. One time we had a guest “sermon” given by a Democrat state politician that was just a campaign speech for higher taxes. Trust me, PCA is much better and more serious about the Bible and following the teachings of Christ.

Matthew, I am truly a fan of your lessons and teaching. I come from a non-denominational background and decided to visit a PCA Presbyterian Church in my area. The service was beautiful and was a worship experience filled with an awe of the Lord. I left overjoyed to have found a Bible teaching, people loving fellowship. My only disappointment was in the use of sprinkling for baptism rather than full immersion. I was proud of the individual for their commitment to the Lord and recognition of their sinful nature and need for Jesus Christ’s saving grace. Other than convenience, why do Presbyterian’s choose this method of baptism? Also, is this a baptism of repentance and acceptance of Jesus as Lord and Savior, AND a commitment to join the Presbyterian Church, or a commitment with the intention of joining the body of Christ as a whole? I’m hoping you can resolve this question for me. I have loved the fundamentalist teachings provided by you!

I’ve always wondered: does the Bible say that all doctrines must be drawn from the Bible? If not, doesn’t that mean that Protestants have at least one doctrine that can’t be drawn from scripture? I will say as the Bible was not compiled right away, it seems that none of the texts that reference scripture could be talking about the collection of 66 or 73 books. Currently coming back to the faith and interested in the Protestant/Catholic debate for this reason. Leaning toward the Catholic side as this seems to be the crux of the debate, but trying to keep an open mind.

Earlier today I quoted from the Council of Trent to show that the Catholic Church does NOT believe in justification by works. In 1999, the Lutheran World Federation and the Roman Catholic Church signed the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification. The following excerpts show that the Catholic Church does NOT teach justification by works: 11. Justification is the forgiveness of sins (cf. Rom 3:23-25; Acts 13:39; Lk 18:14), liberation from the dominating power of sin and death (Rom 5:12-21) and from the curse of the law (Gal 3:10-14). It is acceptance into communion with God: already now, but then fully in God’s coming kingdom (Rom 5:1f). It unites with Christ and with his death and resurrection (Rom 6:5). It occurs in the reception of the Holy Spirit in baptism and incorporation into the one body (Rom 8:1f, 9f; 1 Cor 12:12f). All this is from God alone, for Christ’s sake, by grace, through faith in “the gospel of God’s Son” (Rom 1:1-3). 15. … Together we confess: By grace alone, in faith in Christ’s saving work and not because of any merit on our part, we are accepted by God and receive the Holy Spirit, who renews our hearts while equipping and calling us to good works. 25. We confess together that sinners are justified by faith in the saving action of God in Christ. By the action of the Holy Spirit in baptism, they are granted the gift of salvation, which lays the basis for the whole Christian life. They place their trust in God’s gracious promise by justifying faith, which includes hope in God and love for him. Such a faith is active in love and thus the Christian cannot and should not remain without works. But whatever in the justified precedes or follows the free gift of faith is neither the basis of justification nor merits it. 37. We confess together that good works-a Christian life lived in faith, hope and love-follow justification and are its fruits. When the justified live in Christ and act in the grace they receive, they bring forth, in biblical terms, good fruit. Since Christians struggle against sin their entire lives, this consequence of justification is also for them an obligation they must fulfill. Thus both Jesus and the apostolic Scriptures admonish Christians to bring forth the works of love. It would be a nice gesture if you admitted that you misrepresented the Catholic Church on this and other points.

The Catholic church always says it doesn't believe in salvation through works, but that is because they say the sacraments do not count as works. But in actuality, a work is any ritual or good deed you perform. They require confession to a priest and pardoning of sins by penance, which is literally a prayer or good deed that you do to make up for your sin. They will still call this "grace alone" because they think that's how you obtain grace. But if you could obtain grace by your own actions, it would no longer be grace. (Romans 11:5)

@@karisgranger6013People with the view you are advocating directly contradict Scripture, including 1 Peter 3: 21 and Acts 2 : 38, for examples. Baptism is not a work of man. Ask any Lutheran. Ask any classical Protestant, for that matter. The Baptizer is Jesus. This shouldn't be a problem for Protestants. Is preaching a work? It is something men (and women) do, after all. Yet Paul says, "Faith comes by hearing" (Romans 10: 17). And Paul also asks, "How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?" (Romans 10: 14). If both preaching and baptizing are things that men do, how is one "salvation by works" and the other not?

@@jimmu2008 We are not saved by preaching or baptism. Yes, we are saved through hearing the Gospel. But the one preaching is not saved because they preached it. Yes, when we become a Christian Jesus wants us to be baptized, but we are not saved because we were baptized, and if we were never it would not make us any less saved. The thief on the cross certainly didn't get baptized or take communion. Yet Jesus said "Today you will be with me in paradise". Why could Jesus say this? Because that thief was not saved due to his baptism. He was saved by faith in Jesus. Does that mean I'm advocating for people not to get baptized or take communion? Of course not. But your salvation is not dependent on them. That's what separates Christianity from all other religions that require rituals and traditions to be right with their god. I also want to know, what is the purpose of penance then? Why is it required if it has nothing to do with the forgiveness of sins? Do you believe you must do the penance the priest tells you in order to be saved? Can he tell you to do penance but you just ignore him? Because if you believe you must do penance for anything salvation or forgiveness related, or to earn any merit from God, that is works-based. (Isaiah 64:6)

In the Chatolic Church, the autority of the Sacred Scripture and the Church Tradicion are equal and essential. The Chatolic Church is the church that Jesus himself created, which was made, firstly, of the apostles, then, it layer grew. You cannot depart from the church of Christ, because the Scripture WAS written by the Chatolic Church. No church, no scripture.

But you can say orthodox is more classic because they kept it without changes for all these years while catholic really changed a lot from how it was in the first place. I agree 100% in all you said. But I can't help but bring up, speaking of traditions that are not found in Scripture, I've never heard paedobaptism explained (using Sola Scriptura) that lines up. Would it make sense that under the new covenant baptism is the same as circumcision? Sure, it makes perfect sense from a logical point of view... but I don't see it supported or practiced anywhere in Matthew - Revelation. Can you make a future video on that?

A very interesting person from the 19th century and early 20th is Henry Wace, Dean of Canterbury. He wrote 'Is the Church of England Protestant?', The Quarterly Review, 146, 292 (October 1878):519-549. He defended, against the High Church, the proposition that the Church of England was Protestant. Wace was the guy who debated Thomas Huxley regarding agnosticism.

I've been going to LCMS lutheran church for a long time but I've become convinced that having a born again salvation experience is the norm. lutherans reject this so i watched a local pca church service live today and i'll probably go there soon. I think I agree more with presbyterianism then lutheranism mostly because of the born again experience

I question that view of Lutheranism as normative. See, for example, what Martin Luther says about his conversation experience: "At last, by the mercy of God, meditating day and night, I gave heed to the context of the words, namely, 'In it the righteousness of God is revealed, as it is written, "He who through faith is righteous shall live."' There I began to understand that the righteousness of God is that by which the righteous lives by a gift of God, namely by faith. And this is the meaning: the righteousness of God is revealed by the gospel, namely, the passive righteousness with which merciful God justifies us by faith, as it is written, "He who through faith is righteous shall live." Here I felt that I was altogether born again and had entered paradise itself through open gates." I think what these Lutherans are objecting to is the idea that you must have a certain kind of emotional experience or make a decision for Christ as if it depended on you.

A great video, straight to the point on a truly vital subject. First question/comment: While the vast majority of us come to saving faith with a limited understanding of Christian dogmas can an individual who UNDERSTANDS yet rejects any of the five solas be a Christian. I would say no. I would have candidates for baptism, which I see as, among other things, entry into the Visible Church, be required to publicly affirm that they both understand and accept the five solas. Second question/comment: What is your position on apostolic succession. While I believe that it is ridiculous to hold that a legitimate congregation cannot be established without an elder to whom authority has been granted by another elder who can trace his ordination through an unbroken chain of elders back to the establishment of the church. Would you argue that the Anglican Communion, some Lutherins etc. are not Protestant? Third question/comment: I hold very strongly to the Regulative Principle of Worship. Many "protestants" hold to the Normative Principle. Do you consider them protestants?

Thank you Pastor Matt. I was raised catholic and attended catholic schools through graduation. I never had any interest in going to church or reading the Bible. For many years I was completely put off by religion as a whole. three years ago I felt pulled back into wanting to understand the Bible and who Jesus is. I now attend a Bible teaching Community church and read the Bible and enjoy learning and loving Jesus. The Catholic religion drove me away and learning from you and others i understand it was because of all of the extra things that Catholics make you do and believe in that is not in the Bible..

The problem with Protestantism is that it holds the scripture canonized by the Church (although most Protestantism denies the full Bible), but denies the very Church which canonized it. How does a Protestant know what books are canonical? The other problem is that Protestants have no way to authoritatively interpret scripture, even their own interpretive methods aren’t authoritative, hence why there are so many denominations and differences. It’s sad honestly. I pray for all Protestants to realize their error, and turn to the Holy Orthodox Church

@@kevingrems I don’t want to speak for Protestants but I would say they usually have two approaches: 1. Sola scriptura is supported by 2 Tim 3:16. Unfortunately this passage doesn’t say anything about Scripture being the only ultimate authority. It simply says it is “God-breathed”, aka inspired, which we all agree, and that it is “useful”. Nothing more. There are in fact many more passages, and stronger than this one, in the Bible about the authority of the Church, which Protestants decide to ignore. 2. Sola scriptura is not in the Bible but it is an epistemological presupposition that is needed a priori. Good luck with that.

Martin Luther. He added the word 'alone' in his German translation. People are saved by grace, through faith but that faith is never alone, so I see what Luther was getting at but at the same time we are commanded never to add or subtract to the Inspired Word of God.

What brings all local churches together into one Body under the blood of Christ? The answer is found below. Let us now share the Old Testament Gospel found below with the whole world. On the road to Emmaus He said the Old Testament is about Him. He is the very Word of God in John 1:1, 14. Awaken Church to this truth. Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by husband unto them, saith the LORD: Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Is the most important genealogy in the Bible found in Matthew 1:1 (Gal. 3:16)? Is God's Son the ultimate fulfillment of Israel (John 1:49)? Why has the modern Church done a pitiful job of sharing the Gospel with modern Orthodox Jews? Why would someone tell them they are God's chosen people and then fail to share the Gospel with them? Who is the seed of the woman promised in Genesis 3:15? What did Paul say about Genesis 12:3 in Galatians 3:8? Who is the "son" in Psalm 2? Who is the "suffering servant" of Isaiah 53? Who would fulfill the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34? Who would fulfill the timeline of Daniel chapter 9 before the second temple was destroyed? Why have we not heard this simple Old Testament Gospel preached on Christian television in the United States on a regular basis? Once a person comes to understand the New Covenant promised to Israel and Judah in Jeremiah 31:31-34, which is found fulfilled by Christ during the first century in Hebrews 8:6-13, and Hebrews 10:16-18, and specifically applied to the Church in 2 Corinthians 3:6-8, and Hebrews 12:22-24, man-made Bible doctrines fall apart. Let us now learn to preach the whole Gospel until He comes back. The King of Israel is risen from the dead! (John 1:49, Acts 2:36) We are not come to Mount Sinai in Hebrews 12:18. We are come instead to the New Covenant church of Mount Zion and the blood in Hebrews 12:22-24. 1Jn 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. 1Jn 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. 1Jn 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. The following verses prove the Holy Spirit is the master teacher for those now in the New Covenant. Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Mar 1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Thank you, pastor! I experience many miracles. As a carpenter I learned at age 25 about the Catholic Church. Then reinforced when I worked in the private residence of a Catholic priest. Neither recognized value in an honest, creative carpenter. I consider "works" to mean "spiritual growth". Sincere curiosity is different than casual curiosity. I have had epiphanies while simply engrossed in a blackberry patch. I also "work" when I engage in friendly discussion with other Christians.

But He is not our only intercessor, as the whole passage above clearly indicates. So the one passage that fundamentalists have used to deny intercessionary prayer, when read in context, actually backs up intercessionary prayer. James 5: 16-18 " ...The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful. Elijah was a human being like us; yet he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain upon the land. Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the earth produced its fruit." So we see that intercession strengthens prayer. And the more righteous and faithful the intercessor is, the more powerful the prayer. BUT THAT IS PRAYER ON EARTH. I'VE BEEN TOLD THAT PEOPLE IN HEAVEN CAN NEITHER SEE US OR PRAY FOR US. That is a recent, man-made doctrine, with no authority behind it. Hebrews 12.1 speaks of "a great cloud of witnesses" who surround us, and who consist of the faithful holy ones of God. Many examples of these witnesses are given in the preceding Chapter 11 of Hebrews. Later in the Bible we see this vision of heaven: Revelation 4.4: Surrounding the throne were twenty four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. Revelation 5.8: ...and the twenty four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. Seeking Mary's intercession probably dates back to the earliest Christians. One of the oldest Christian prayers recorded in writing, the Sub Tuum, from the 200s AD, is a prayer to Mary: We fly to your patronage, O holy Mother of God. There is no biblical evidence that any created being in heaven can pray or intercede for humans on earth. This includes Mary, church fathers, apostles, saints, and angels. The Bible teaches that Jesus intercedes for us in heaven. “Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died-more than that, who was raised to life-is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us” (Romans 8:34). “Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through [Jesus], because he always lives to intercede for them” (Hebrews 7:25). In Scripture, no human being is ever called our intercessor in heaven except for our “one mediator . . ., the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us. “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words” (Romans 8:26). The Holy Spirit aids our prayers and guides our hearts toward what pleases God, even if our deep, holy desires cannot be expressed in words. We can pray directly to God the Father. “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (Luke 11:13). “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). Prior to Christ’s finished work on the cross, God’s people were represented before God by priests. However, when Jesus died, “the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom” (Mark 15:38). Believers in Christ in the New Testament era are priests themselves (Revelation 1:6), and our high priest is Jesus Christ (Hebrews 4:14). As children of God, believers have direct access to God in Jesus’ name. Jesus taught believers to pray directly to God (Matthew 6:9). The Bible never tells us to pray to God via another human being in heaven. It is almost unthinkable that anyone might desire a human (or an angel) in heaven to intercede for him, especially when he can go to God directly. Believers are assured that God hears them when they pray. “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us” (1 John 5:14). Even if people in heaven, such as Mary or the saints, could hear people on earth, there is no biblical evidence that their petitions would carry any extra weight. No one approaches God on his or her own merits but on the merits of Christ. Also, how could created beings in heaven entertain the petitions from so many people simultaneously? Only God is omniscient.

I'm at the 9:25 mark. Let me tell you about some errors in your Venn diagram. First, grace alone belongs in the middle. The Catholic Church teaches that we are saved by grace alone because even the works we do are given (graced) to us by God. Christ alone also belongs in the middle. He is the sole Savior and mediator. Paragraph 480 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) states, "Jesus Christ is true God and true man, in the unity of his divine person; for this reason he is the one and only mediator between God and men." However, Paul also says, “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men” (1 Tim. 2:1). Mary and the Saints (whether canonized or unknown) still intercede for us. They don't stop when they die and go to heaven. Speaking of heaven, "Heaven & Hell" also belong in the middle. Obviously, the Catholic Church teaches that both Heaven and Hell are real, and that everyone will spend eternity in one or the other. Purgatory is best thought of as a process of final sanctification rather than a place of torment like Hell. CCC Paragraphs 1030 to 1031 state, "All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. But recently I have been thinking we actually should desire to be purged from sin. David even prayed for God to purge him: "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow" (Psalm 51:7).

Scripture defines heresy, not one specific church. Also, people tend to think the denominations within protestantism are so vastly different from each other. In reality, where we differ is on secondary issues. For example, Presbyterians baptize babies whereas Baptists do not. We are all united in our core beliefs about the Gospel. And we never say someone else is not truly a Christian because they are in a different denomination. I am a Baptist, but this Presbyterian guy is just as much a Christian as I am. There is a lot more unity than you think. Whereas, I recently had a conversation with an Orthodox person who said all other denominations are not the body of Christ and that we may technically be going to Heaven but do not count as brethren. So we are somehow an "other". My question is, how can someone who's a Christian not be part of the body of Christ? That's impossible. Of course that may not represent all Orthodox people, it may just be that individual who thinks this. But I know Orthodox believes they are the true church and nobody else. So Protestants in their view are like a secondary breed of Christian who may not be going to Hell, but also aren't living in God's will with the gifts God gives to His people. That seems more disunified than Protestantism with all its denominations who accept each other as brothers and sisters in Christ.

Why does St. Paul exhort Timothy and all Christisns to play this mediating role? Verse 3: “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour.” (1 Tim. 2:3) Who is “God our Saviour”? Jesus Christ, of course. Paul is saying quite explicitly that the mediation he is exhorting us to make “is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour,” in the sight of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. So now we get to verse 4, which tells us why Jesus Christ would desire this from us: “Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.”(1 Tim. 2:4) The reason we ought to make these various prayers of mediation is because Jesus Christ desires, “all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” And now we come to verse 5, not cherry-picked out of context but within the context of St. Paul’s first letter to Timothy, chapter 2, verses 1-6: “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.” (1 Tim. 2:5-6) In short, 1 Tim. 2:1-6 instructs all Christians to mediate on behalf of all mankind through different types of prayer, which are offered through the one mediator Jesus Christ. And in order to assuage any doubt about this, St. Paul adds: “Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity. I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.” (1 Tim. 2:7-8) So is St. Mary, Jesus’ Mother a mediator via Jesus Christ? Are the other saints in Heaven mediating on behalf of those on earth, via Jesus Christ? John 2:3, 5 gives a good example of Mary playing a mediating role in Jesus’ ministry: “the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine…His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” The Book of Revelation suggests the saints in Heaven also play a mediating role: “and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus,” the martyrs. (Rev. 20:4) And even moreso in Rev. 4:10-11, “The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” And quite explicitly, Rev. 5:8, “and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.” And so, whereas Jesus Christ is the one mediator between God and man, St. Paul correctly understood that all Christians are called to share in this mediation of Christ through the offering of “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks…made for all men.” (1 Tim. 2:1)😁😁

For example, the main difference between Baptists and Presbyterians is our beliefs on baptism. Presbyterians baptize infants and sprinkle water overhead, Baptists do not do infant baptism and we fully dunk someone in a tank. But as a Baptist, I fully accept this Presbyterian man as a brother in Christ. All denominations are united in their core beliefs about the Gospel. And we accept each other as equally Christians. Whereas I recently had an Orthodox person tell me I do not count as brethen and that Protestants are not in the body of Christ. That seems more disunified than Protestantism with all its denominations.

In the 80s and 90s I remember going from the Republic of Ireland, crossing the border to Northern Ireland and feeling a constant sense of dread both from Catholic terrorists, who, while singing of brotherhood and freedom, wanted to liberate Ireland and turn it into a Soviet satelite state like Cuba. Well, i can open a Church in my garage and teach whatever i want and i will be labeled as "protestant". Protestantism is a umbrella term that ihas been used to talk about every Church that has was created after the Reformation and is not EO, Catholic or Oriental Orthodox lol. Whoever when protestants talk about "Protestantism" we are talking about the historic traditions that started during the Reformation, we are talking about Anglicanism, Presbyterianism, Lutheranism etc. and all of the agree with Sola Fide. A lot of the so called "protestant churches" are really part of a posterior movement called Restorationism and should not be put in the same bag as the other historical protestant denominations.

Alignment with scriptural teaching, not apostolic succession, is the determining factor of the trueness of a church. What is mentioned in Scripture is the idea that the Word of God was to be the guide that the church was to follow (Acts 20:32). It is Scripture that was to be the infallible measuring stick for teaching and practice (2 Timothy 3:16-17). It is the Scriptures that teachings are to be compared to (Acts 17:10-12). Apostolic authority was passed on through the writings of the apostles, not through apostolic succession.

Excellent talk. For the idea that no one should place themselves under a human authority (be he pope, bishop or priest), I always point to 1 Corinthians 14:35. This is usually interpreted as being a restriction upon women but actually I see it as primarily a large mandate upon men. If a woman is expected to seek answers from her husband, then the husband should either have the answer or know how to find it. In order for this to happen, he must be biblically literate himself rather than being dependent upon the utterings of a priest and hoping that they’re in line with scripture. Because Paul calls upon men to know their own way around the Bible, a call which was further emphasized by Calvin, we are not to be obedient subjects to clerical geldings.
