i think it really depends on the type of travel you engage in. if a vacation to you means bouncing from hostel to hostel, city to city, then one bag travel makes sense as you're constantly on the move. but if you're just gonna be situated in the same hotel for multiple days/weeks, then the benefits of one bag travel start to wane. for me, two bag travel is ideal. one sling/daypack as a personal item, and then a 35-40L backpack/duffel as the overhead carry-on. still a pretty versatile and portable set-up.

It not only depends on the type of travel but the person I've always been a 1 bag traveler except when moving and when going to destinations I know where I'll be buying lots of souvenirs like when I went back to my home state (gotta get the local goodies).

Thank you for this. Since the late 1980’s, I traveled with one bag (while backpacking, business travel, and leisure travel). But now, I am taking insulin and other medication that I can’t afford to get damaged, so now I travel with a rolling bag and a small backpack. Making adjustments for age

I find that I’m the opposite. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gone smaller. I used to travel with a 45 litre M.E.I. Vouageur, and they always made me check it. Then I moved to a 35 Litre Minaal Carry On. Never had to check it. These were for trips of several months each in tropical South Asia. Now I will be 70 years old later this year, and I will be carrying only the 21 litre Minaal Daily. It has hide away backpack straps and I can carry it also by a handle or a single duffel type sling. I will also carry the Osprey Daylite 6 litre crossbody sling. For a total of 27 litres. Minaal Daily gets tossed in the overhead, and my cross body sling stays on me on the plane. No checked luggage. I would not want to use wheelie luggage. Used to take my MacBook. But no more. Only going to take my iPad Mini and my iPhone and a backup Sonim XP3 military grade flip phone. Any photos or videos I want to take, I can do use my iPhone, or iPad. My Mackbook and fancy cameras are staying home.

I'm also 70 (Sep 2021) and, like you, I'm moving down to smaller backpacks (daypacks) because I'm a wimpy girl. I gave away my technical RTW travel backpack. But I do still need multiple bags. I have a lot of daily meds to pack. I'm also a plus size so my clothes are larger therefore they take up more space - even though I'm packing fewer, multiple use/versatile items. I wear 3 bags (bum bag, crossbody, day pack) and carry 1 satchel or weekender. All weigh less than 9 lbs. fully loaded. Works for me. Also, unlike 'Crossover Daypack reviews' I don't care if I look like a tourist.

@@nuvoclassic Happy fo hear from you. What part of the world do you like to travel in or live in for months at a time? I wish I could spend lots of time in Europe, but it’s out of my price range. But I can live like a king easily in south and south east Asia on my income. This time, instead of going for months, I might just stay and live there. I have friends in that part of the world now. Looks like we are both minimalists. Carrying less than 9 lbs. is certainly minimalist. I have some meds also. Had a quadruple bypass a couple years ago. But my cardiologist and other doctors gave me a green light to go anywhere in the world I want again. And after showing at least three months stability following the surgery, and cardiologist’s okay, my health insurance will cover me out of country (Canada) again. But I’m also saving money always in a special account for self insurance also. Just in case. Maybe finish out my life over there, never come back to North America. I love the tropical climate, I lose a lot of weight when I’m there, and feel younger with more energy, and I became Buddhist and spend a lot of time at temples in Cambodia and Thailand. Take care, and wishing you many many more years of travel. I looked online, apparently the oldest person backpacking the world is 95. WOW ! !

Let's face it, a lot of the over packing done by young people in their 20s is because they want to look fashionable. I'm in my 40s and care less about that and more about comfort. I would imagine that trend will continue. With experience you learn that quite frankly nobody really cares and you care even less what they think. That equals a great deal of freedom.

@@treasurethetime2463 Exactly. You’re quite correct. When I travel, I try my best to blend in and not stand out looking like a tourist. Of course we maybe can’t blend in totally. But even blending in a little bit helps. I hate looking like a tourist.

Same here my friend, I still love looking err..shopping for travel backpacks, though I won’t be able to travel with one bag. I tried traveled with minimal items, but I ended up sacrificing my productivity. Hope for speedy recovery from your surgery!

glad I found this video. I recently bought a 40 L eagle creek bag that holds all my stuff: a couple packing cubes, drone case, small camera bag, tripod and laptop. Except the thing is HEAVY and I can barely tolerate 5 min on my back. I used to do carry on wheeled luggage and everyday laptop bag but ended up carrying the luggage by the handle so I can move faster. My solution now: small carry on duffel (which can hold a lot) and everyday school bag for laptop camera case etc. I still should be able to avoid checked bags.

I love to travel with just 1 bag, however, I need what I need and the rules keep changing. I love to take pictures of the places I travel to, so that means 2 things, 1. Camera equipment and 2. Check luggage. I have to check my bag because I take a trip, and (in Mexico) a tripod is consider a weapon, so the 2 options are a) leave it home and miss all the night pictures, long exposure and self portrait pics. or b) pay the price and enjoy your travels... SO this is why I check and carry a 2nd bags, a 30L and a runners waist pack, I know, nobody uses them because they are so 1980´s but I can put my semiprofessional camera, 3 lenses, flash and some filters... so it can get heavy, but it is the best for me. The tripot fits in my backpack...

I always aim to pack light, but to me this has never been mutually exclusive with only carrying one bag, it’s just a practical solution to having scoliosis and being prone to losing things on vacation. I never really saw how those giant backpacks I see tourists carry all the time was less cumbersome than a small personal bag and a carry-on sized suitcase. I also don’t think the backpacks I’ve seen many onebaggers carry make them look less like tourists… Not fighting for overhead storage is definitely a benefit to one bagging with a personal item, but for longer trips having an extra pair of shoes and more changes of clothes is usually worth it to me

I have traveled to 9 countries. I've used the hard side polycarbonatr bags and soft siders.. I ended up with the Victorinox International 22 inch carry on soft side carry on 21x13x9 and a personal item. It has a dedicated laptop pocket with a side zippered access.. Access to outside pockets is necessary for me. Also for short trips I have the Samsonite two wheeled underseat bag, 16x13x9. I have traveled with it extensively and it fits under most airline seats. It has held up very well with no issues with the wheels. It has a trolley sleeve to stack it on a larger bag. I have found the two wheeled version holds a out 20% more than the four wheeled version. I am looking at the Travel Pro Maxlite underseat bag as an upgrade. Happy travels.

Im with you - a small 35-40L roller bag with a 20-25L personal item is totally the way to go.

What a great channel! And it's gratifying to find someone who's thinking about the SAME things I am! LOL When I go for conferences, etc., especially overseas, I always pack a photo kit for photography - I even try to squeeze in some on location portraits if I can. But I'm bringing a laptop, often a tablet, a camera kit (Fuji or m4/3), work clothes (suit), shoes, etc. And so I need at least a EDC style bag to do it all (cross over! Did you trademark that term?). I'm going to look into your channel/website a lot more. As for two bag travel... I concur! I live by the one bag travel as much as I can, but it just gets too difficult. I pack my main (no wheel) carry on, and once I get an extra pair of shoes and some odds and ends in there - especially if I'm traveling for business - I have literally no room left. I'm almost 6' tall, so clothes take up room. I'm pretty efficient in my packing but I just can't figure out how frequent travellers seem to pack so much into carry on bags. So, I've been going with two carry on items, and this is where the "cross over" part comes in. I use Tom Bihn bags a lot: 1) Aeronaut 40L; and 2) Messenger ID bag (now discontinued). The ID bag is a good business/EDC, but is a reasonable camera bag if you toss in an insert. It's not the fastest access, but it's a compromise. As for wheels, I took some advice from the One Bag website and bought a foldable wheel rack. Light enough that nobody makes a fuss, but if I'm walking a long distance, I unfold it, bungee my Aeronaut to it, and away I go. Not as sturdy as wheelable luggage, but serviceable. Great channel again! (My wife won't believe I found a channel after my own heart!)

Other people judging me for having a suitcase is probably the last reason to consider onebagging, it's more about mobility and convenience. But if you've got a full camera and laptop setup with you on top of clothes and essentials it is close to impossible to one bag.

It all depends on how much “stuff” you feel you need. Over the years I got rid of a lot of stuff I don’t really need. I now travel for extended periods of several months. With a 21 litre Minaal Daily and a 6 litre Osprey Daylite crossbody sling. A total of only 27 litres. The best thing is, with so little stuff, I actually feel more free. I turn 70 later this year.

Hi Deron, I drag an Eagle Creek two wheeled Tarmac around the world, with a Nomatic backpack for my laptop, iPad, camera, cables, etc. BTW - you know me, I’m KBO’s dad. 👍🏻
