THANK YOU for stating the real problem. A lot of people conclude "dog parks are bad" when the issue is people bringing bloodsport dogs with genetic dog-directed prey drive and gameness to the park. You can't out-love or out-train genetics.

The problem is when you determine that genetics drives behavior in dogs, you can conclude the same is true for humans. That opens the door to some uncomfortable conversations so most people would rather pretend that all dog behavior is simply shaped by the owner :)

@@SergioImbarlina That was a great summation by that guy - thanks. As a past and current pit bull owner I am in complete agreement that a pit bull is not a dog for every type of person. It takes a person who understands how to be the boss of their dog. I also like how this guy describes the sensitivity of pit bulls - they are (usually) very keen to please their person.

I think the other problem is some dogs can just outgrow the dog park. I know this was true for my intact male. From 3 months old I'd bring him to the park let him play with the dogs and get pets from people. At around 12 months it became something else where he was asserting his dominance even with dogs twice his size and he was more focused on playing with me and the ball I'd always throw around than playing with the other dogs. One person even told me one of the last times I went to a park that he was only interested in me and the ball than any of the dogs in the park which was true. I believe where I went wrong is always throwing the ball for him maybe. I think I should have just taken the ball in one day at the park and the next time not bring the ball or maybe throwing the ball out later on in our park visit after he played with the other dogs to exercise and tire him out so he's not as hyper at the house.

As a dog walker, I always tell my clients that the best time to go to a dog park is Monday to Friday, in the middle of the day where there won't be as many people or right after work Monday to Friday because, where most people will just go home, a good dog owner will actually sacrifice their supper to first take their dog to the park. I always advise never to go to a dog park on the weekend because that's when you get the idiots who only exercise their dogs once a week and stand around with their coffees, not paying attention to what is going on.

@instridewith_life You can have a dog fight while walking your dog leashed on a sidewalk - I know this personally as just this morning, I woke up to 2 dogs barking and lunging at each other in front of my house. Last year, my senior Bichi-poo got grabbed by a dog while we were walking - she was sniffing the grass and the other dog lunged at her and grabbed her by the neck - I had to pull it off her. Thankfully, she was just bruised but just proving that it can happen anywhere and is the dog owner and not the dog in most cases that causes the problem.

I was in Loreto Mexico and there were several lose pit bulls. The large male wrapped his large jaws around my female lab/rot neck and pinned her. My husband and I grabbed the pit by the back legs, lifted him off the ground, and the pit let go of my dog. We then carried the dog by the collar and back legs over to the water and threw him in. He did not come after my dog again. It was very scary and we probably could have been bit. But at that time we would do anything to protect our dog.

I totally agree with you pertaining to the behavior of Pitbulls. It also goes with Pitt mixes. I've seen it on a number of occasions. They go after a dog and refuse to let go of the other dog.. I've witnessed the owner beating on their dog trying to get them to release. It's damn scary to witness and it's a helpless feeling!!! I would never ever take any of my dogs to a dog park!! Don't trust that owners will be able to control their dogs.

As a pit bull owner I completely agree with you. Many people don't know that choking (cutting out the air supply) the dog is the quickest way to get the dog to release. You also have an epidemic of people using a harness with no collar, so you try to pull the dog from the harness and that only encourages the dog to grab onto tighter. I love pit bulls but I am fully aware of what they are capable of. I do take him to the dog park and he's great with dogs but I am very selective of when I go. If I see some dogs are out of control or owners not paying attention, or gathered together as a pack, I am out of there. I know my dog will not start a fight but he will probably finish it.

the major problem is when people who buy dominant dogs are told dominance doesn't exist in dogs so they go to a dog park with a dominant dog looking to start some shit while they throw hot dogs at it. The dog might not even be the instigator, but it's also not going to back down

Yes! When a fight breaks out in my household it is dangerous and it is never a lightweight fight because I own pitbulls and a couple of them have that gameness to them and when they turn on there intense. I've never seen other dogs fight to the extreme that they fight to. Even though I've had to break up many flights and I know that I can do it every single time I am scared shirtless because the intensity that comes from it is unavoidable. They're holding on and they're shaking each other and you can't pull them apart because it's going to do more damage the only thing you can do with mine are choke them off. Imagine the chaos that ensues at the dog park when it happens with trying to get that apart. But while I have those dogs I also have a pitbull / American bulldog and he doesn't want to hurt nobody, even though he is capable of doing so at 96lbs and his head and neck are enormous. His brother has gone at him multiple times and the third time it happened he finally started defending himself but he has met atleast 50 dogs probably more and never have any of those interactions gone bad. Somehow he knows that his brother is a different story and he's not worried about other dogs being the same way. But even him I'd never take inside of a dog park because it's just too much of a risk. People want their pitbulls to be like every other dog and the thing is, they're not like other dogs, they have this unique thing about them and if you can't admit that then you shouldn't own them. It is common sense that a dog that is instinctually dog aggressive may not do well inside of a dog park even when trained well.

My dog had some punctures on her throat and face, which healed. That said,I love my dogs, but know that I can never take them to dog parks, have to watch rhen, that one especially, around my grand daughters. The key to owning pit bulls is responsibility. I have a 1 year old doberman with swingers. I always wanted a Doberman and was immediately inspired by your videos. So far I have been extremely blessed with an incredible temperament. The dog park has been critical in my dogs development. He can play with any dog, even ones that have attacked him. I agree with your sentiments with pits. I have had an experience in the past dog sitting a pitbull and seen the switch flip. Unless you have had to deal with that situation you can not comprehend just how intense and helpless you feel. I had to choke the pit to get it to release on a boxer he lived with. There is something different in that breed the same way there is something uniquely different about the dobermans focus and attention they show their leader. Thank you for all the great free content. I wish I had the time to join your program. Dogs are amazing and almost no one truly understands how to build a healthy relationship as the pack leader.

I take my German Shepherd to the dog park a lot, but I live in the Netherlands, we always ask before entering if our dog can join, if there's a new dog. If someone just goes in, they're usually told that's not safe to do. There's a huge pitt here, owner is a tiny girl, I talked to her and was blunt, I don't trust her dog around mine. I'm weary about Malinois, too. They are so intense. My dog was seriously attacked by a Mal x Turkish mountain dog, they knew each other, she just immediately attacked. A lot of us dog owners know each other's dogs, and know who can be with who, and we just work around what goes.

German here. I do the same. I also don't trust pitts around my dog if I don'tknow them(same constellation: big pitt cross[she tells people he is a border collie mix, but my uncle owned pitts and staffies, I know one when I see one], tiny owner) This dog did bite my Standard Schnauzer when he wasn't even looking at him. Good thing is she doesn't come to the park anymore as I am not the only one who's dog got bit and she was threatened with animal control by two local trainers. One of them is specialist for testing the potential danger/aggression potential of certain breeds and their crosses for our city officials. He can get you in serious trouble. I love Pitts, Staffies, Bullterrier. I love these breeds, but I don't trust them near my dog if I don't know them and the owner well. Malis are the same. They are to intense, like you just said.

When a dog is in kill mode they don’t hear anything, don’t feel pain and are laser focused on bite shake hold. I once broke up a dog fight by grabbing the aggressor by the scruff of the neck and back skin over the hips simultaneously and lifting straight up into the air and the dog still held on lifting the other dog with it. You can train a dog to drop and you can teach a hunting dog to release but that is completely different than a dog in the red zone. Another thing that I’ve seen is when there is a fight, dogs that are not involved get triggered and jump in oftentimes hanging up on the weakest dog- it’s a primal instinct that is more prevalent in certain breeds and can’t be trained out of them. When wolves make a kill they each grab, bite pull and shake trying to tear a piece off dismembering it- they wouldn’t be able to eat as easily if other canines weren’t there to pull. The doggy version of that is tug of war with a rope but that game is just the remnants of prey drive that we have bred out of some of them.

Joel, we had a stafford shire who was my first real experience owning a dog. A friend at the time who was fostering her talked us into taking her and offered getting us a trainer. Thank God! We took the offer. Our trainer was this 4'9" asian lady that worked specifically with pit bulls who were "red zone" casses. She comes to our apartment and when she walks in doing her normal routine meeting a new dog to get an idea about them she tells me " she is a very smart dog, and you need to be 100 steps ahead of this dog for her not to rule you." She takes us on our walk and didn't use a whole lot of treats but more similar methods to what you taught on your channel. As we walk she begins to tell me how she has a family with small children and has a pitty whom she was working with severe aggression. She told her husband to take the kids out of the house and when the dog came home she tackled this dog to the ground rolled on him and layed on him on his back until he understood she was the dominate head over him all while he was muzzled. She worked with a pitt rescue we got our Pixie from. Pixie was a great dog, I learned a lot with her and we used to take her to dog parks and beachs in the very beginning but I stopped as she got to about 3 years because something the asian trainer told me is "owners with pitts need to understand the culture of dogs, and the responsibility with this dog it comes with" she told me pitt owners even if its not their dogs fault for the initial attack but the pitt is stronger and has a different mind when it comes to the moment they bite, the owner should always take the responsibility to handle the costs due to the nature of Pitts. She also told me greet people when walking our dog but don't be offended when they don't want to meet your dog. I'm glad we stopped dog parks and chose other methods to help get her energy out. She was a strong girl and I learned a lot with her. My husband and I were very much on the same page with her but when it came to other dogs we just used a lot of caution because of her breed and things we learned raising her. After she passed I told my husband I wanted another breed to experience raising, we have a beagle this round which is totally different

I've got a 2y old, unneutered male Weimaraner. I go to a dog park (about soccer field size) every day (in a suburban/rural area). Your channel has helped me enormously to recognize and evaluate dog behaviour, so I know when not to enter or abort or even just recall. I've seen a video from Dog Daddy also emphasizing how important evaluation is. Both the dogs in the park and the mood my dog is in. Watching you and Prince has given me so much insight into body language and what signals to look for and of course things specifically about unneutered males. It vastly improved my ability to communicate clearly with my dog, probably prevented a lot of frustration of not understanding why my dog isn't listening/paying attention. My two cents to add on parks: - Always be prepared to intervene, pre-emptively if need be. Even if it means people get angry with you. Harsh words are far more preferable to a wounded or dead dog. - Consider bringing some supplies like extra poop bags (a clean park is way more relaxed), water and a bowl and a med-kit. Scratches and collisions can happen and not just the dogs! Thank you Mr. Beckman, I wish you and Prince a long long time together :)

He did so well at the dog park even when other dogs picked fights w him. My current dog is different and our dog park doesn't have separated fenced areas for dogs that need it. So we don't go to the dog park. I have a 100ft rope and I take him to the school yard when it's empty to play ball w him and let him run. Dog park isn't worth it.

If no one else does, Joel, I agree with you. My husband and I had a kid pretty quickly after getting married mostly because I have endometriosis, and I was worried about not being able to have children. It was not an ideal time to have kids, and my husband wanted to wait a bit so we weren't really trying, and it appears that I do not have any fertility problems. But my husband was offered a seasonal job in the mountains, so he only had a job for the summer, and we had just moved right before she was born. But we pulled it together, even though we lived in my husband's grandmother's basement for the first few months. It was chaos, and it was difficult, but we grew as people, and even though our relationship had some struggles, we came out of it much more prepared for children than we would have been, and much better people with a better relationship. I know plenty of people who have had this experience. Having children will help you grow more than just about anything else, that's just how it is.

I have never taken any of my dogs to a dog park, mainly because there are to many owners who have dogs that don't listen. I have a doxie/pit mix who I was taking for a walk yesterday (dog was a rescue..is built like a doxie, just stands a little taller, weight about 24 lbs)and a dog from across the street from where we were walking got out of someones house, and started running towards us. Trash cans were out so I was at first trying to keep the cans inbetween the two dogs. Since this dog looked more like a sporting breed mix I was trying not to panic. The owner was trying to get the dog...call the dog...dog was not listening. So the dog finally took off..think he was just excited to be out loose. The dog did come back for round 2, but by then I had gotten my mace out just in case...but was glad I did not have to use it. Now if this had been a Pit that had run at my dog like that I would have picked him up and gotten him into the trash can...That being said, years ago when I had an Aussie I had a Golden come after my dog and went for the neck right away...with the owner saying "he is just playing" I was proud of my dog he stayed calm..I was probably more panicked than he was. So after this I feel like I need to be more prepared. Sometimes I do carry treats with me, but not always. That was the one time I wish I had some, I would have tossed one over close to the owner so maybe the owner could have gotten a hold of the dog sooner. Anyway not sure if you have done a podcast on things we can do to protect ourselves and our dogs if a dog comes charging at you. Yeah, I don't know if you are ever fully prepared when it comes to kids. I will say that it is easier if you really wanted to have them, makes it easier to roll with everything. If you never wanted kids, and then become pregnant I think mentally it can make things harder. I think that is one of the good things of having a dog or cat before having kids. Teaches you responsibility and teaches you to think of someone else besides yourself. Because if you can't handle having a dog or cat....do not have kids!

First time commenter. Enjoying binge watching Beckman Unleashed and your training videos ! Thanks for all the free information. Just have a few notes on dogs that go to Doggy Daycare. I adopted a rescue that could not stay home alone even after months of trying different things to help him settle. Didn't want to give up on him so started taking him to DC while I was at work which was part-time. It helped socialize him to new people, dogs and situations. He is a great dog now and I am thankful I had that resource close by and that I could afford it. In retrospect I just didn't have the know how in the beginning to solve his destructive behaviors and his excessive barking that drove my neighbors nuts. Years later I now work at that DC. Been there just under a year. We have all breeds, all energy levels, all ages, and temperaments. Between our indoor yard, outdoor yard, family dog areas, tourist dog areas and little's area we can monitor which dogs work well together and can switch them in/out and around as needed. Joel is spot on about the energy in the "Yard" changing as staff enters an area ( we have a regular crew but the dogs have favorites ) or a dog/dogs enter a Yard. We manage it by what we call Doggy Tetris. We certainly allow dogs to play all they want but the higher energy dogs can escalate the energy to unsafe levels. There are combinations that set each other off. Take one over the top dog out of a Yard that has 15 in it and the energy level drops immediately. I'm paid to keep my attention on the dogs in my assigned Yard to notice/prevent issues, monitor play, and give affection. And I pick up a lot of poop. Some dogs are half day dogs, 5 hours, and some are full day dogs. Some dogs do great in that situation. Some just are not suited for what we offer. Thanks for what you do. I appreciate learning from you ~

I chose my doggy daycare partly because of Joel's recommendation of max 4 hours group play - the one I chose has a 2 hour break mid-day and all dogs go back to their kennels for those 2 hours. It's 4 or 5 hours max before and after the 2 hour break, depending on the day of the week. It's a bit of a drive from where I live but I try to do at least one half-day/ week. I really don't see a lot of day care or group-style boarding places ensure a break like that though.

I understand your stands on dog parks. We do have a group that shows up at 6 pm sharp and block the park for 2 hrs. Not literally, but every decent dog owner avoids this group like the plague. Here is why: They get there, everyone unleashes their dog and thats it. They sit down on the bench and ignore their dogs for the time being there. And this dog pack means business. They bark at everyone walking by, they are aggressive against each other, there is recourse aggression going on, there is no point when they chill, they are always rilled up the whole 2 hours. And the owners do NOTHING! Maybe call out once, but they don't move their butts one inch. I was part of this group for a few weeks. The turning point for me was 2 things 1. My dogs obedience plummeted fast 2. He got bit by....guess the breed...a pitbull mix and the pitbull was told he was a "good boy" for biting my standard schnauzer who had the BACK to him F**k this group. Seriously. My dog was fine thankfully, but shaken up.

This thumbnail really caught my attention. I have enjoyed the podcast since the beginning . My husband and I have learned many helpful methods watching the KZbin videos. We are also clients and Joel and his team have worked with our dog Mango. I value his opinions so much and was afraid we’d have to stop our dog park trips! We’ve taken her to the dog park several times a week since she was 4 months old to satisfy her need to run/sprint/ chase her ball. (She’s a 2 1/2 year old Doberman) We also used the dog park to practice recall using Joel’s “go get method”and tamped down her ball obsession with much success using Joel’s advice. I’m so glad this podcast actually gave practical advice for utilizing the dog park for those of us who need to go. We live in a big city with strict 6 foot leash laws so the dog park / dog beach are the only options for free running. We have always walked away from or left when the vibe goes south. 😂 Thanks for your honesty about taking intact males like Prince into a dog park. He’s so lucky to have his own dog park right at your facility! As always sending much love and respect your way!

The first time i watched my boss's dog we went to a dog park. She told me to go. I haven't been there since and I'll never go back. U N R U L Y. I was breaking up potential fights. It made me feel odd. I don't mind feeling strange but this was different. There were ~20 ish dogs. The majority of their people(as some were walkers with multiple) were entirely uninvolved. Like taking toddlers to Raging Waters and the person in charge goes into the lazy river, does phone stuff and never thinks to check in on the toddlers. Breaking up the dogs was instinctive. I didn't actually choose my action. Immediately afterward i was conscious of how it may have looked to whomever, whether i was in the right to do so, etc. I'm not shitting on the person (Walker)with 7 dogs on her phone. I'm simply the opposite of this and the anxiety isn't worth it for me.. Maybe if the dog was having his best ever time I'd consider it. He did a few laps and then came back to me the rest of the time. It's seemingly a free for all. I won't. There wasn't another person there as concerned as i was. No balance. No go. ❤❤❤ you 2!

I have been a dog trainer full time for 21 years. I worked with animals part time for 20+ years before that. Having owned 52 dogs over the past 25 years and having up to 17 dogs at one time living with me and working with me, there are very few trainers out there that have that type of experience. I have adopted badly behaved dogs and raised some from puppies. All turn out to be well behaved and adjusted stable dogs. Currently I have 9 dogs, 4 German Shepherds, 2 Doberman, a Rottweiler, a collie and an Irish Setter. I have NEVER promoted dog parks or dog daycare. I DO NOT allow my dogs to play rough with each other. I work my client's dogs on the outside of the dog park to teach them to ignore the craziness on the inside! I am the protector. I am a veterinarian and a pit bull owner. I have had unpleasant encounters at our dog park, I believe they have been because other dogs initiated the discord. My pitty loves to play and will perform the needed sniffing protocol and then try to entice play, if the other dog isn’t interested she will disengage and walk away. But if the other dog shows aggression it’s game on, there’s never damage even though the encounter sounds horrible, I have videoed these bouts in slo-mo format and when you play it back you can see they are not biting one another but rather just acting like it.

My father kept staffies in the 70’s I love them, great dogs. But they are bred to hold on in a fight, and sometimes they just won’t let go unless it’s to get a better hold. They don’t feel much pain it’s true. One of ours Mick, used to practically sit on the hearth, he loved the warmth of the open fire. Someone would say I can smell burning and he’d be laying there with a burning spark on his face or nose, he didn’t feel it at all. We tried to keep him off it but he always snuck back, the fire guard would always let some embers through. He was an amazing dog with people and our other dogs never had trouble in that respect. All the bull terrier’s get this red mist sometimes and it’s on. It’s scary to witness, especially when the other dog is screaming in pain. I never had any fear of him though, he was amazing with us kids. But I’m always cautious of others, like you say there are many idiots out there who shouldn’t have a stuffed toy let alone a dog.

fwiw the big offenders at dog parks are rescue dogs. The new owner has no idea how they will react, but they are "good" enough dog owners to know that they'll need socializing. So, everyone else gets to soak the outcome. I'm not saying that's entirely a bad thing, but it's how I saw it happen often enough.

So i work as as a dog trainer/behaviorist in South Africa, my brother and his family just emigrated to San Francisco since thats where my sister in law is actually from so would be amazing if i could take a little trip up to your facility when im out there to visit them! One thing I will say is that based on videos I've watched and my experience with Pit Bulls in South Africa, the temperaments differ by quite a large margin. There seem to be so many pitbull breeders in America and so many people who want them as a status symbol that the breeding has gotten somewhat out of control, here there are far less breeders and they are more dedicated to breeding a more balanced temperament and for the vast majority it has has worked extremely well. Dont get me wrong a pit that still wants to do damage will do damage the likelihood is just miles reduced, we also dont have those hulking behemoths that are not pure Pitts in SA. You spoke about the Pitt bull being a dog that could kill your dog, Ive also seen though the a bull terrier when sufficiently motivated can do the same thing, the latch, they'll shake, they have an incredible tolerance for pain and if they decide that's what they want there's a big problem at hand. Bull terriers are however less volatile breeds, though when i was young we had neighbors that had three bull terriers, a mother, a father and a son and when the neighbors were away the son decided to kill the father, and there was nothing anyone could do to get it to release and they tried everything. I have a ton of experience with Boerboels, South Africa being their country of origin, and while i can with absolute certainty tell you the boerboel of today is not the Boerboel of 10-15 years ago i still work with them a lot. The Boerboel used to be a dog akin to the size and weight of the Bullmastiff, although now we are getting these 80 something kilogram monsters, there is no doubt in my my mind that Neopolitan mastiff and maybe even some English mastiff was introduced into the breeding to get the much larger size. Another theory is that they went on to iosolate the the Ysterburg Mastiff which is technically known as the true South African Mastiff which existed in South Africca around the 1940s they did well and bringing the breed back to to life and now while they do obviously exist while in small numbers and very limited breeders but crossing the two would create a seriously massive dog. Though it would explain the sudden emergence of black boerboels which there never were before, brindle yes but never black. Anyway, my point is i have seen a number of Boerboels this side of the world not just get into a dominance fight with another dog, spending time at a specific dog park here in Johannesburg you get the odd monster boerboel who gets a challenge from a Rotty or a Malamute, and things turn sideways very quickly, the fight with the Malamute he was shaking so hard he was practically lifting the dog of the ground, amidst the chaos i told the owner to do his best to hold onto the boerboels head so that he couldnt shake it, and then thankfully he already had a chain on i attached my lead and i lifted him by the neck with the chain, and just as he let go cause he couldn't breathe i grabbed the leash and jerked him around and coutinued to do so until we had out some distance between the two dogs and i walked him away. That malamute survived because it was so hairy most of the bites the boerboel got were mouthfuls of hair. The Rotty was different i saw the two start to size each other up, go neck to neck and I killed it in the crib gave a clap and said hey! and they stopped and went their separate ways, luckily for the the Rottweiler. I guess what im saying is that dogs in different countries while at their base have the same instincts but can be extremely different in their behaviors which can come down to all sorts of factors, breeding, gene pool manipulation, The type of dogs being imported into the country by breeders often sets up a lot of problems and the dogs already being bred with. also whether dogs are seen as status symbols or companions has a major effect.

After I began a career as a professional dog trainer, I finally got my own doberman. I named him "prince Zuko" in part because Prince had such an influence on my love for dobermans. My time in daycares taught me that dog parks are just trouble. I do not bring my (now 1.5 year old) male, intact doberman to the dog park. Instead we do play dates with his bestie, a pitbull I certified as a good citizen and trust implicitly. I definitely have had to break up fights with pits and their drive to fight is unmatched. There was one time a pit latched onto a husky by the neck, it felt like it lasted forever and I thought the husky would die.

At 8 months old, became extremely, like extremely fixated on dogs and out of no where got violent aggressive with dogs. I dont know what happened. At 1 years old, would in dogs dog and constantly start fights(no biting) just very bad dominance. I officially took him away from dogs so nothing would happen. He slipped out of my dog and tried attacking a my random neighbors dog. Had to use all my power to pull him off. At that point, I couldn’t have him anymore. Brought him to a behavioralist and he told us he needed to be euthanized because he’s extremely dangerous to the public. He even started turning on our 5 year old and attacked our old dog he grew up with. It was crazy because we go him at 8 weeks and he had great behavioral training and socialization. But mentally was off. He ended up being put down. I now have a cane corso and she’s the best dog in the world.

I know it seems like a loaded question but it's not. I'm genuinely curious. I believe they all have it and the "it" is genetic. I've caught several strays or dogs at large running the neighborhood and 1 was a pit. He was very even tempered/chill. He wasn't 1 of the shorter more aggressive types I've seen which is why I think he was let go. Ran my neighborhood for at least a month didn't bother me while walking my dog or anyone. The ones I see out in yards tied up on occasion are always the shorter type and always seem to go fuckin nuts no matter what.

A friend came upon an incident in the dog park parking lot. She heard screaming and as she got closer could see a woman holding 2 small dogs up over her head. There was a pitbull gnawing on her calf hoping she would drop her dogs. The woman never let go of her dogs and the pitti owner finally catches up to his dog and finally pulls him off of her. The pitti owner said he had taken his dog to this park for 2 yrs with no issues and was clearly devastated by his pet's behaviour while the woman has had up to something like 12 surgeries to try and repair the damage.

It sucks to hear this, but I have to agree. I used to be one of those "pits are great, it's all about the owner and how you raise them". But, I now have a pit that was raised from a puppy who at times displays this type of "brain switch" behavior. She is the perfect dog 99% of the time. Loose leash trained, walks well with other dogs (pack walks), cuddly, no food or people aggression, cute AF etc. Unfortunately... she has gone after our older dog 3x and another family dog 1x. Joel is right... they DO NOT let go if they don't want to. This dog knows "out", we practice it all the time. When she is in that mode, she does not care that I am saying (yelling) "out". A friend of ours knocked her on the head HARD, and nothing. To this day I will not let her with other dogs without a muzzle or without a gentle leader on walks. Sometimes she meets dogs and they are great! But, I just can't trust her to be off muzzle. Even with our older dog, she doesn't go after her anymore, (thanks to me body slamming her one time after she tried going after the older one with a muzzle 🙄 she finally learned I wasn't playing with her...) but I still won't let them interact unsupervised. Just wanted to share this on case anyone else experienced this. It's ok to use a muzzle if it's for the safety of the dogs and if it keeps your dog from being euthanized due to an incident. It's possible to keep your dogs separated in the same home and still give them a great life. It's okay if your pit acts like this sometimes...it doesn't mean you are a bad owner!

It really depends on the pitbull and the owner. My sister has a pit that will hide when a fight breaks out. My dad and i also have a pit named Nubbins who was a rescue and Bear who is an American Bulldog. Bear has killed before. The people who owned him before had a billy goat that attacked and he killed it. Bear almost didnt survive the attack and wouldn't have if he hadnt finished it. We have cameras so we've been able to witness exactly what caused the fights here. Bear never started a fight and he never meant to kill. Every fight has started from the others messing with him and he just couldn't take it anymore. And i mean like 10mins or so of them just nipping at his ears and lips and such. He snaps and a fight starts. Its when Nubbins gets involved with him. Pack mentality. Also we can make him release on command. The fights are technically our fault. We took in these two small dogs that loved to antagonize him and hang off his lips. Everyone is neutered. It is also true you cant ignore the traits of the breed of dog. I have a hound dog that will come inside and cuddle with the cats and chill with the barn cats. But if any of them get in the yard, she'll kill it. Doesnt matter if she was just cuddling with them or not. Cant train it out of her either.

I usually go to the small apartment dog park by my house. Went recently right after work and there were too many dogs there to monitor the whole situation. I’ve been watching more of your videos to get an understanding of dog body language and personality. when I’m at the park i try to analyze as best as i can, just so I can leave if needed because things can definitely escalate out of nowhere and very quickly. I don’t know if there’s already been a basic video done about dog body language at dog parks but I think it would be helpful. I take my medium sized german shepherd/cattle dog mix to do her laps so she can be contained off leash for her safety, in addition to the walks we do. But that’s only when there is no one or maybe 1 or 2 other dogs there.

My puppy got bitten on the lip by an old dog at the dog park. She was only about 6 months old! Made her lip bleed. She did fight back a little but stopped when I grabbed her. First time I ever saw aggression in my puppy. All she did was go and say hello to the dog and i5 just turned and attacked her. Yes she was a little annoying because she was just a puppy. The other owners just stood there, no intervention, no correction. I’ve not been back to a dog park.

Joel, *EVERYTHING* that you described about what dogs aren't good at dog parks is 💯. Problem is I think people think this is the only way to socialize them sometimes. I've seen all that stuff first hand on different occasions when I frequented 1 by me. When I went with my old boy Frank (cattle dog mix similar to the recent nipping video) he was the type to intervene if he saw a dog getting ganged up on. He always did it in a herding manor unless he had to defend himself. Guess he thought he was the park 5-0. It's best with a balanced confident dog for sure, always a risk of some Jackass with a dog they have no business having. Worst repeat offender was a big Husky that would bully other dogs if not stood up to (owner didnt have very good control). He tried that over the back neck shit and stepped over my smaller 55-60lb Rott mix, Lincoln. *1 time*. Lincoln came out from under in a fury, teeth out and got on the Huskies back. That was the end of that happening. DOMINANCE doesn't exist though....lol. Moral of the story is if you go, know your dog, have control verbally and always be ready to intervene. Always some inherent risk whether breed or stupid owner or both. Thanks for yet another fun Thursday and some very good talking points!

My previous dobie did PERFECT at the dog park. He was kind of like prince. My current dobie cannot do dog park unless hes the only dog there and if other owners of dogs w certain tendencies understood their dogs and dog AND human behavior they would also avoid the dog park when there are other dogs or dogs they're going to have dominance issues or reactivity with. I'm so sick of finding owners at the dog park hanging out like teens at recess while their dogs are acting totally inappropriate.

Firstly, KZbin viewers can manually change the HD quality resolution settings, so it's not a camera issue. Secondly, there are always those dog owners that will not clean up after their dogs, be that at dog parks, curbsides, regular parks, people's lawns, the sidewalk, on roads, etc. Thirdly, some people also get dogs or pets just as a possession and do not have any meaningful relationship with them.

The only time I have taken my dog to a dog park, it was my dog and my wife's for a while. A lady brought her dog in and just dropped the leash. Her dog became aggressive with my wife's dog. The woman then let us know that her husband usually took the dog to the park because she could not control the dog and that the dog would attack other dogs and one of their grandsons. At that point it was clear we were never going to put out dogs through that, we can arrange hang outs with our friends' dogs. Really borrowing time until our yard is fenced.

After listening to this for the 2nd time I've come to the conclusion that I've been a *closet breedist* the whole time 😢. Kept my eyes on certain dogs that just seemed off to me even if it wasn't blatantly 1 purebred dog. Always been interested in the other breeds I saw so id look them up too to learn mannerisms and behaviors. Also realized that most everything Joel has said I've noticed in hindsight like the fast twitch energy etc. if you pay attention you can really see what works. At a certain point I realized my dogs didnt really give 2 shits about the other dogs at the park probably in part from being out walking in different places and they were around other dogs/ environments with friends dogs during their younger years. They just wanted to be where I was walk and run some. Dont go much at all if ever now but never really shyed away from stopping shit before it went to far (1 dog getting overwhelmed by a bunch) or similar situations. The way I figured I'd rather break it up before it happened than see some other persons dog get hurt and if someone didnt like what I did, I was ready to give them a piece of my mind too. Just kinda felt like I was doing the right thing out of common sense in a way if needed when I'd go to the park or my 1 dog would run interference instinctually. Guess I've been a part of the POD before it existed 😅

My intact male Great Pyrenees does not go to dog parks and yet we have had several attacks by dogs that were illegally off leash or the other owner lost control of their leash and most of them were pit bulls. To be fair there are a lot of pit bulls but other than one Rottweiler and one German Shepard the other 5 incidents involved pit bulls. Fortunately only one of them was hurt (my dog usually is able to submit them) but I don’t think it’s a coincidence. Some of these owners may have wanted a fight (.2 of them I suspect) . The thing about pit bulls that makes some so different is they’ve had that self-preservation instinct that dogs normally possess bred out of them.

It;s good to note that Prince still enjoys checking out dog parks even though he lives at a dog park and meets a zillion new dogs every week. New environments plus new dog smells will always appeal. I needed to hear the word of caution because although I've never had a bad experience it pays to be cautious with a young intact male GSD and a fairly socially inept working herding mix. Things can go so bad so fast you don't want to spend the rest of your life wishing you'd walked away at the first red flag.

I rely on a dog park because I have very high energy 20lb dogs. They have a small breed section, which makes it way safer, and I go when it’s empty early in the morning. Young dogs really need to run, and a yard doesn’t cut it sometimes in the city. I think it’s less about dog parks and more about squashing this myth that dogs need to socialize with many different random strange dogs. I learned the hard way that it’s much more effective to enroll in group puppy classes, and make friends that own nice dogs. None of my dogs have ever been bitten or harmed, but I have been attacked and bitten protecting them. Lesson learned.

I brought a Springer Spaniel puppy, age 9 months. He attempted to hump a male Doggo Argentino which I quickly stopped him from doing with a firm puppy correction. About 8 minutes later we were walking with my husky and the Spaniel. The Doggo ran to the puppy and pinned him. No harm done thankfully, plus my dominate male husky seemed unconcerned and he watches over this pup. The pup learned a valuable lesson, however 4 days later me, the puppy and the husky stepped into the dog park, dogs still leashed, and the same Doggo Argentino comes running over and pinned the puppy again by the throat. Thankfully the pup, Jack, froze, whimpered a bit and was not being harmed but I called the owner over saying "help" pretty calmly, and not exessively loud, twice. This guys SLOWLY made his way over, and the third time I called I said "help for ef sakes in louder voice. The guy comes over and gets his dog off my pup with attitude saying: I didnt have to curse, my voice agitated his dog, it remembered being humped by the puppy 4 days ago and the puppy wasn't fixed so...!!! Thankfully my husky didn't get worked up or it would of been an f-show of me against a chainlink fence wrapped and tangled in two leashes with a dog fight between a Doggo and husky with me and a puppy tangled in the mix. I discovered the guy rescued the Doggo 3 weeks prior so he didn't even KNOW this dog yet and had no right to even bring him to the dog park. Anyway, the dog doesn't go there any more so, like I warned him, he was going to have trouble with that sort of behavior.
