This type of channel always underestimates the intelligence and ability and willingness to learn of dogs. If they had to acknowledge it they would have to see how incompetent and inadequate their efforts are.

@@Dognerdcayour position is probably well intended and even partially correct that dogs are capable of so much more than they are allowed to do. However you are ignoring half of the equation that dog trainers are dealing with. The weak half. The human half. You can only do so much for a dog unless you’re going to also find it a better owner. But as dog trainers we have to deal with the owner the dog actually has and that is not usually an optimal situation for the dog or the trainer. Successful trainers like Joel have to design a realistic approach for the actual dog owners they usually deal with.

@@OffGridDogs I think you actually are supporting my point that this channel does zero to educate owners and gives them zero takeaway to improve the situation. It leaves owners with the impression that it is the best they can expect from their dog. I call it very dumbed down training and sad that it passes for training at all.

That seems to sum up how most people feel about there dogs here. I waited a long time to get dogs til I had time to invest in their training. I schedule quality dog time into every day. They have great lives and that makes me me happy. I am not even sure why most of the people commenting here even want a dog.

When I first watched one of Joel’s videos, I thought this method was nuts. My dog is exactly like this and since I’ve been working on this method it’s been a game changer. I’m so happy that I continued watching Joel’s videos. He is no nonsense but in a caring way. In the end we all want well behaved dogs and it takes work…. It doesn’t just happen. Thank you Joel♥️

I have a 20 pound 9-month-old Cavalier, and his pulling is every bit as challenging to me as my previous 60 pound lab. I've been trying a slip lead for a few weeks which helps a lot while we are on my property, but as soon as we get into the outside world, he has no impulse control, very excited about everything, won't even take treats. He's young, I know, but it's frustrating for both of us. Few to no videos where trainers work with small dogs. Maybe it takes months of training. I'll start working on this doorway method today and consider a head halter if we don't make progress. Thank you for the clear instructions in all your videos.

Kicking myself for not doing this from day one. He is seven now. I am disabled, poor balance and lots of body pains. Must Start Now. Because walks are not in the picture with his pulling me to sniff at high speed. He walks nicely in an open space, but, man, those ditches smell like heaven!

@KazeNoTaniFarmHakuba I agree gentle leader Joel always says is like power steering, it will amplify input to the dog so you don't need strength. That's why they use it on horses, horses with a collar would drag any human all over the face of the Earth, but halters is the magic!

Just in case there's more people watching this that also have tiny dogs: This works really well with them too. I used Joels training on my Chihuahua and he's miles better now on walks. Only difference is, I use a harness to not damage the neck.

I’m trying this with my 4lb chihuahua but she gets scared when I do a light tug on the leash. Any time I try to correct her she freaks out and gets scared and pulls away harder. Did yours do this at first? I don’t want to make her fearful but also don’t know how to safely correct her. She’s a nightmare on a leash.

@@brooklynbolton6360 Mine panicked first too. He'd cower and do the whole lip-lick thing. Then he'd go back to pulling and I'd have to do it again. I had to do it a couple of times in a row. And whenever he actually staid close to me he got loads of praise and treats. Just to try and cement the whole "look if you stay with me it's awesome and you don't get tugged" thing. Maybe your girl doesn't understand what the right thing to do is yet and that's why she panics?

This is great if you live in a house. I live in an apartment where people are constantly coming and going and my 8 month old puppy wants to jump on everyone and say hi. Basically I just have to get him in and out the door as quick as possible. I can’t really hang out at the door.

I am glad that you mentioned you realease the dog to go and sniff. 1. How much time in average would you say the dog should be able to sniff on a walk? 2. How do you let the dog know "now you follow me again" after sniffing time - a cue or do you just start walking and let the dog figure it out?

I´m in quite of a bind. Started working at a doggy daycare. Love dogs, always have had well-trained dogs. I also really need the money, with a 2 year old and a bad economy.. beggars cant be choosers. So. This place more or less only use "good reinforcements". Lure the dogs with treats on the walks. (like, as soon as they look at you, treat.) However.. thats the only thing. If they pull, try to call them in or use treats. If they see any wildlife, other dogs or somehow gets fixated on something... you guessed it. treats. I can understand that it doesn´t look good for "average Joe" when they see corrections, that it might hurt the dogs, and that you are the face of the company when you take them for walks. But this is just crazy. There is no, "wait, until they are calmed" and go outside, there is no corrections... Anyone got any ideas?

I'm 6 weeks in with my 3.5yo rescue cockapoo with all sorts of behavioural issues, including mad pulling, and the doorway method (both leaving and entering a place) is the single biggest step forward we've taken so far. Perfect walking only lasts for 20 minutes at the moment, but we're getting there! Thanks Joel.

this channel is a masterpiece. I'll leave this comment to promote the video. I tried to use different methods and different tools, but when I started using your advice, I went back to a regular leash and a regular collar, my relationship with my dog began to improve (3 year old Akita dog). Of course, he is not perfect, but I began to notice that he is a good guy and he began to pay more attention to my words, gestures and actions. and we not only love each other, but also respect each other. the conclusion I drew from all your videos? key to success: first you need to achieve good behavior of the dog on a leash at home (or in the yard, since my dog lives not in the house, but in the yard) -> good behavior will also be on the street. If a dog behaves disgustingly in the house, how can I expect it to behave well outside?

Great stuff Joel. I re-homed an 8 month Golden that had never been walked on a leash, not socialised with other dogs before I got him. Now after having him for over a year and following your methods he’s pretty good…not perfect. He’s great using your ‘doorway method’, moves calmly out of the door and stops as I lock the door, then looks and we move off calmly. Walks well on a loose leash, very little pulling, looking back at me…etc….UNTIL we get near to another dog then forgets all the good walking; mainly he’s a bit reactive to some other dogs, especially small yappy ones or a very reactive Rottweiler. Mostly his reactivity is kicked off by the other dogs whose owners are clueless and typically say “good boy/girl” to their dog! However he is great meeting several other Goldens and a few Cockapoos who he has made friends with. Clearly the reactivity is ‘work in progress’; it is slowly improving (using Joel’s reactivity methods) but I think the point I’m making to other owners is to not expect too much too soon, the problem isn’t fixed in weeks, or even many months….be patient. Having said that, if there’s anyone who can advise on how I can speed things up I’d love to hear from them! Thanks Joel from Cambridge UK🇬🇧

My struggle with my Irish setter is when we are walking towards a fun place. It doesn't matter how many test stops or turn arounds I do, it doesn't click that she needs to be with me as we go to the park. I use face harness too and struggle with transition off of it.

JOEL! I've been doing your method to the T my last couple walks no matter how many stops or how long the walk takes, my border collie he's still reactive but SO MUCH BETTER. There was a dog off leash, i saw him i knew he was going to run up to me and my dog, before the dog got to me, i picked my 62 lbs border Collie up instantly, to protect him and to protect the little bull dog. My dog was upset did a little growl and one bark but nothing bad happened and he was calm enough i could pick him up. Silver lining 😭

i don't know if your going to answer this but i have a dog that ive done the door way method and the stopping and turning method and treats but she still doesn't pay attention. if there is a squirl she's like " i dont care about you" and yanks over there. i have a prong collar on her , (i know your not a fan of that collar) that seems to help but i dont know how to get her to pay attention to me. she is a 4 year old female mutt. the DNA test we did on her was Husky, Sheperd, Pit, beagle, mix. it probably doesn't help that im only a 15 year old trying to train there dog lol

Its like having a child say please and thank you to get an ice cream, but once you take your eye off them they throw it at a car window for fun. Just becuase you have a sit stay at the door doesnt mean their behavious without supervision is going to be correct

Excellent video, explaining things very well. Doing this method in the early days helped my dog immensely. It does help control leash reactivity by training the dog to have hesitation and impulse control, by learning the dog to have split focus and understanding who is the boss and decision maker on walks. It becomes, you taking the dog on a walk, not the dog taking you on a walk.

Our male retriever is 6 months old….when can we implement this? Can we start now- I know your dog there is 10 months old- can we expect him to start getting this at his age? He loves going outside on a long leash- but we kinda just let him go where he wants - we live on 2 acres surrounded by woods - So the environment is a bit different from many people. But we still want him to focus on us - thanks! I love your attitude - “I don’t care what the dog wants”’. 😂. I’m kinda tired of the trainers who are constantly giving treats - just like I raised my kids - “it’s not about you” 😊 Love your videos. Thanks so much.

You’ll want to start around 9 months, but even then you’ll want to keep it light. They’re out of their puppy minds. A year old is when the dog is an adult and can understand the correction.

This has solved severe leash reactivity with my dog. I use a slipleash. However, I have noticed that she needs a little reminder course every couple of months. She kinda forgets, or just slowly gets sassy again. Only takes 1 correction though, since she knows what she is supposed to do😅 Another thing I strongly believe in is structured walks. I think Cesar tought me that. When we walk, we walk. When I tell you to sniff stuff and pee, you can. Physical corrections never worked when she was into high gear, she didn’t feel a thing, choked herself out. Just seeing red😂 Got annoyed, redirected on me, little half assed, but still. This video is gold. Thanks for keeping us educated Joel!

I’m not sure what the point of walking the dog is? Am I nuts to think this is my dog’s time. he’s been waiting for it and I really want him to enjoy it. I call it connected walking when I ask, he’s walking by side when he asks (not by pulling) He goes to sniff. Whenever possible I have him on a long line so he could sniff freely and make sure that we do at least one off leash walk a day.

@@Dognerdca That’s great! My dog just needs a lot of structure, or she will be reactive, pushy and totally unsafe. She does really well when she is just told to follow me and focus on walking together. Also, she walks/runs off leash in a forest or field daily for at least 40 minutes, and meeting other dogs. So that’s her freedom-time.

I'm probably not there yet (8 month old mini aussie). Our dog stays at the door. I walk out and she stays with the door open until I say "OK" and then she leaves with me. When we meet other dogs or people, she sits quietly next to me on the path, but she really wants to see other dogs and people.

Can you show the same on a husky? I understand the idea, but mine would think that you're just being mean and weird at the moment, and it will not affect the actual dog meeting. I think mine is more like territorial guy. He owns 5km around our place and other dogs are eather danger to his nice position or potential friends. He looks for both constantly during walks. All on the leash are definitely a threat. 😅

I have been doing this with my dog and it works sooo great when we are just walking. He really keeps his focus on me. However, when he gets to the sniffing, he often then gets distracted and starts pulling while in the middle of sniffing. Any advice on how to not let them pull while they sniff and just keeping them more focused when allowing sniffing/potty breaks in general? 😩😩😩

I really appreciate your knowledge sharing. Really appreciate it! I learned so much and I have committed as much as I could. Now I have really good Border Collie. He waits in front of the gate until I say, ok lets go. But it still pulls on the leash 1 year old. He pulls when we start our walk and all the time, until he gets some play, or dog company and play. Basically I call it until he uses some of his energy. He knows I don't like it, I am showing it to him from few months old, but it is still there. I was thinking of prong so many times, but I never boght it. Is it late? Strangely he pulls much less with harness!? That also prolonged my decision and made me question my self. What do you suggest? PS of course I tried your no pull leash method.

I used to make my dog sit at the door before I let him out. Would open door tell him to sit and stay and trained him to not move until I said ok go. I would go sit on couch and literally ignore him for 5-10 min before giving him the ok.

I walk two dachshunds and second half of walk is always great .... because they tend to know (regardless of changing walk route) that they are on the way back home. I'm sure most dogs are this smart! First half of walk is always a bit of a struggle with both dogs well behind me as I tug a bit on their respective harnesses on the split lead leash. Curious what anyone would recommend in this scenario, which is the opposite of the aggressive/excited dogs that lunge ahead of their human. My dogs telepathically seem to say to each other " let's prove our point that we are not thrilled about this walk by staying waaaay back." Verbal clues or a tug on leash with small treat reward might bring one dog even with me, but the second pooch is introverted and also not motivated by treats or even verbal excitement. Thoughts?

I've watched sooo many of these videos but still don't really know how to implement this with my 9.5 month old cavalier (he's a little larger than many). 🤦🏻‍♀️ There are no videos I've seen yet with a small dog who has throat problems/chokes incredibly easy on a collar so has to use a harness. Heck, because of how short he is I can't even really use the front ring on it since he trips over the leash/gets it between his legs. I live in an apartment so walks are non-negotiable. We go on at least 3-4 walks a day for 15-30 mins each time. That's not including quick trips to potty. Any advice from anyone on how to use this method on my dog would be greatly appreciated! I will say that he is really good at stopping when I do. But he won't pay attention to me and as soon as I move again he's pulling again immediately. Him stopping is another issue in itself. There are many times he just wants to sit and watch everything. It's super hard to get him to move when he wants to do this. He is rather good at following me if I make sporadic turns and even somehow predicting a sporadic turn. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Trests are often useless with him. They'll work at the start of the walk, but by the middle, even if he's being good and i want to reward him, he often doesn't care to eat them. Loves the treats inside the home though.

I have a 6 month old mini poodle … he’s very headstrong …. Watched this video in the morning, took him out and did this door technique. TELL MEEEEE how it worked right away? lol my puppy is walking like he’s a pro !! However he’s still a little reactive (he wants play) towards dogs that stop and stare at him but this was day 1! Outside of that this 1000% works highly recommended! If anyone has suggestions on what I might be doing wrong when dogs approach? I walk the other way and redirect but he kinda ignores the corrections and I don’t want to pull too hard he’s 12lbs

Have been following your methods for my poodle mix, he's about a year and a half but still very scatterbrained on walks. These methods make him about 30-40% better as you typically say, but sometimes not. How much of it is also based on age? I am guessing they mellow out a bit as they get older but maybe not?

Do you have a video on a dog that stops/sits on walks when going a certain direction? The leash method you've shown has worked very well for my 4 year old dog, but she refuses to walk passed certain houses/areas occasionally. Anxiety/fear, and short of dragging her nothing has worked. Maybe just pick her up and carry her there anyway I'm not sure. But I haven't found a video on your channel with this specific issue

It's a great if your regular collar has slipped off before, the extra pressure makes it tighter so that will never happen with a martingale. But... Training my pomsky to walk outside with one just makes her keep choking since she's a very energetic puppy. I switched to a step in halter, pulls so much less, and rarely chokes herself.

Hey, i have a Sprollie pup, i literally cannot get her to go out on a leash... She outright refuses to walk on a leash, however, she will walk on it if i take her out the back yard... I have no idea why this is. Even when shes in the backyard on a leash, she doesnt let me walk her, she tries to walk off by herself (basically walking me). Need help to kick this habbit of hers, not sure how to tackle this.

My Great Pyrenees mix broke out of the Gentle Leader somehow on our last walk. The buckle came undone, and she is in a medium, which fits her well. Luckily she was just trying approach another dog barking from the fence, so she didn't run away and we were able to get control quickly. Any advice? I love the gentle leader, but I'm thinking we might need to switch back to a flat collar.

I had that happen a few times, they are a bit flimsy on strong & clever dogs, they can get out of it. I Went to 2 leads, 1 one harness or collar for backup for a while to get through the training.

Regarding the go-get method, if I'm using a long lead, should I still go and get the dog BY THE COLLAR or are nudge/tugs on the lead as effective?

We adopted a skittish, unsocialized golden retriever 3 weeks ago. He was kept in a cage with other dogs x 7mos and not socialized by his backyard breeder. A rescue organization bought him from Craigslist to get hi to a safe environment. He does great inside. In the backyard, however, he does not come to us and he is skittish. Any suggestions? Thank you.

He needs time, you can’t rush the process, he’s making big adjustments and it’s only been three weeks. Be patient with him, he’s used to confined spaces and the yard is probably a bit scary right now. I used to take my fearful rescue out in our yard on a leash at first so she could explore without being overwhelmed. After a few days she would explore on her own. Find what makes your new boy comfortable and work with that. Good luck!🐾🐾

My dog is a mixed 9 month old. When I turn around she just takes the correction and 180s away without ever looking at me. I've done treats, gentle leader, harness. Tried all your methods looking like a crazy man doing 180s not going anywhere. She knows 'look at me' but won't do it even when in a sit position. She takes treats then runs off. Driving me nuts!

My girl is 2 1/2 years old now (ACD). I'm still out there changing directions, never getting home ... but seriously, I always feel like a fool. She knows when we are training, then she's perfect, but once we cross the road for a real walk, she does not care. Otherwise she's great, recall is 100% just the freaking pulling on our walks. I tried every method out there.

Can someone explain what to do if your dog doesn't give a f about hitting the end of the leash? I have a working line GSD who is hard as nails, hitting the end of the leash is not really a correction to him....

I'm on my 5th GSD, less than 6 months old now. I have a prong collar that I used on a previous dog. If I have a hard time with her, I'll use it. I think it would make a difference for you. There are videos on youtube for properly using a prong collar. You'll want to watch those if you never used one. Good luck.

How do you make the dog look at you? My 11 month old shiba will stop with a correction, but will not make eye contact. I’ve tried a gentle leader for 3 weeks now, and it moves is head but his eyes are elsewhere and when he DOES look at me it’s a side eye and a look of “why should I listen to you”

You can't demmand engagement (eye contact and attraction to u). Accept the little victory that your Shiba IS stopping and staying when you indicate. The more pressure you give even when the dog is already doing what is expected, that is how your dog will not look at you. My dog doesn't need to be devoted to me to be great.

My retriever is more stubborn and has more energy than any other dog I've ever had. He's 3 and still so exuberant lol they're not always as easy as they look. My other dog is lazy by comparison.

QUESTION. Whats the best way to modify the doorway method if you have closers on your doors? Do you prop them open, remove them, a sit stay, etc. Because if you throw open the door and they fly out. The door would close to much before you can pull them back in.

Stand by the door with a boot or sneaker on and as soon as you open the door, jam it with your foot. All you're doing is standing there and letting the dog run out of leash on its own. So stand at the door where the hinges are, and push open till you can put your foot there to stop it, but still see the dog and let them come back to you.

If you’re holding the leash, you have to act like a leader. Your dog should be able to count on you in the world you’ve brought them to. If you’re allowing them to lead you, you’re expecting them to solve all perceived problems. It’s way too much to expect from most pets and too much without extensive training for service dogs.

HI Tried this with a refusal young Husky. He decided to pump the swinging glass door with his paws. I stepped back until the door caught his 2 front paws . Done . Now he only waits for me to exit . I call this the 'Porcupine effect' . A dog learns when he gets pricked in nature. He decided to chew my wife's high heel, I threw it at him. Now he only stares at it. Get your money back.

What's fair. A dog causing muscle ,tendon joint pain , and neck pain from a dog that just don't stop pulling and jetting off. Or not walking a dog period .

I know what is that…i have the same problem with my golden and is bad not walking becouse its getting worse…i start lessons with a dog trainner and she is getting better…also putting her in the middle of the people and dogs is so overwhelming that she is calm down.

This is great but for an older dog that really does not care is a continual training session with a 9 year old! She continues to try to go ahead. She does not go out the doorway. But she will take advantage the moment you are not watching.

@@Dognerdcashe still forges ahead on a gentle leader. There are so many problems it has been a frustrating journey with this dog. She does not act like anything dog I have ever had.

@@sherryskinner855 sorry you’re having trouble with this one. I responded earlier, but he blocked I think because it had a link in it. Once I left my door open because it didn’t latch behind me. Came home and found both my dogs chilling in the entranceway. This is called threshold training. Try looking up McCann Dogs threshold training. It is similar to the way I teach it.
