Hey Rob. Long time listener first time caller. I had a similar situation in the state of colorado. I ended up taking legal action against a dealer. I cant get super specific with which dealer due to settlement terms but initially we had a losing case. There could be no liability established based on the legal language in the PPI agreement. We ended up getting to the discovery portion of the case, we got surveillance footage of the vehicle only being in a bay for 30 mins with a tech there. We reached settlement, their liability insurance paid out under a “professional negligence” term. Total damages netted out to 37k. We settled and agreed to an amount that helped cover legal fees. I maybe lost 1200 bucks in filings and discovery type fees. Check out that professional negligence clause though. Might make your life easier when they realize its covered (if they have good insurance).

I would have thought the dealer could plug their computer up to it and check the ecu to see what miles it reports because the mileage blocker things only block the miles that show up on the dash but other computers inside the car continue to keep track of the actual miles.

This is true. At least for CDJR, every single module tracks mileage do does so independently of one another. Only the cluster is responsible for displaying it, but they would have to rewrite every module and I just don't think that's plausible?

With enough time and effort, you could still potentially hack it, but then it's the cost-benefit of doing that.

Oh, and alot of those control units are supposed to be allowed written/married to the vehicle ONCE. That data set is not supposed to be rewritable. Example. Ignition switch modules, pcm/ecm/tcm/srs/abs/ etc etc

Gearbox seal is a HUGE expense on these cars. I almost bought this car, so glad I didn't. Dealer that did the PPI was Ferrari of Fort Lauderdale .

Maybe carbon ceramic pads and rotors were taken off when they did all the miles and put back on. Also you can pull engine/chassis data like engine hours and amount of fuel consumed etc to see if there are any clues about the actual mileage.

Your lawyer is going to be able to nail the service department on discovery? Question: Dealership how many PPI have you done in the past year? Like for the money that they charge what dealership doesn't do them? That is unheard of and they did one on your other car. If someone brings a car in for a state inspection do they not do that as well? That's another thing if they lied about everything they said they checked for and didn't, under discovery you should have your attorney subpoena every service over the last 3 years for irregularaties. Just how many other people did they rip off in past year on PPIs that they said they didn't do and lied about them on the inspection reports. Like they should have a checklist for everything they looked for. What mechanic in their right mind wants to sit through a deposition and be questioned on how bad they screwed up your PPI and over charged for it? They are the ones that will have to answer questions truthfully under oath. Really I would call your DMV to have this dealership go through a State Inspection because they lied to you by saying your car was safe to drive from a PPI when they inspected it and you didn't warn you about all the lights and steering rack. How many unsafe cars are on the road that are not safe to do negligent mechanics here. Regardless if this a civil matter State official need to be notified that you got scammed on your PPI. Your out like a $1000 on the PPI but clearly this dealership should have to pay a State fines for negligence. However they all never say they did any Wrong doing.

Paying anyone 3 or more hours for a PPI on a car, you would fully expect for them to see the fluid leaks, the tear in the skid plate, the check engine light, check all of the stored codes in the modules, check the tread depths of the tires, and briefly look at the brakes for wear. It's fine if you miss one or two things on a 10 minute inspection that's included with an oil change at a normal car dealership or even a quick lube place. But Rob paid a specialist multiple hours for a PPI to specifically check everything over. And the fact that they missed all of that...it definitely calls for something

A machine shop had a customer that bought a Numbers Matching 60's Corvette from a well known Auction House . Paid top dollar . The Big Block had been modified and he wasn't happy w/the cam . Wanted it more Streetable to drive . They checked the Block numbers. Believe it was a 427 . Ordered parts to freshen it up . But when they started stripping it down they found it was a 396 bore . Long story short , someone had ground the org. #'s off , made a mode and made new #'s with epoxy and glued them on . Customer called the Auction house , nothing they could do becouse it was a 1st time seller and they have no good contact info on him .

I live in Florida and bought a 2016 Escalade from California because it was a really good deal and it was in the spec that I wanted. had a PPI done at the Cadillac dealership and was told that a test drive was not a part of their PPI process. I told them I would pay extra to have a test drive done because I wanted to make sure that the transmission was good. They forgot to do the test drive and the seller was pressing me to make a decision and I foolishly decided to move forward anyways. Now I have an Escalade with a bad transmission, thermostat, and CUE screen failing. They wouldn’t even refund me my PPI which was $200.

458 brake pads good for 30k miles or 30 years. So an 8000 mile car will have brake pad wear consistent with 8000 miles. You don't replace carbon ceramics like regular brakes.

Tolerances are one thing. Subaru is built to last, this is built to go fast. So it needs careful maintenance more often. But still, 20k and this sort of damage and overall condition of the car speaks of absolute negligence from the previous owner.

The part is probably mostly off the shelf components from a tier one supplier like most components like that in a car. The brand uses it as a revenue stream like any other. They charge what their typical customer is willing to pay. It’s why often you will have a common component between a Porsche and a vw or something along those lines with the Porsche dealer charging significantly more for the Porsche part that is really just a Bosch off the shelf part.

Something I learned very quickly, you need to make sure you sue first, file the lawsuit and have your attorney talk to them,. The dealership can turn around and sue you first and drag this on for 4 years, quit being a nice guy you will get the BIG FK being to nice .... Sue them, talk to them , and if they agree to fix your demands than withdrawal the lawsuit...

Depends on who does the home inspections. I do them and trust me. The homeowners dreed me. I used to do state inspections for bond measures approved by tax payers. Mainly universities and colleges. I used to think this is my tax dollars paying for this, so it better be perfect. I inspect the same way for a client. Some realtors have blacklisted me. However word of mouth keeps me very very busy.

I had a very similar experience with PPI's unfortunately with a jeep my buddy bought. Garage caught that one of the U joints in the front knuckle was bad, but missed a laundry list of things that was just baffling to me and found myself as soon as I looked at it for 30 seconds after he already bought it based on the PPI. The engine was leaking out of every seal, the rad was leaking, the muffler was swiss cheese, it had a ton of shoddy rust repairs, the rear end links were hotdog down a hallway, exhaust leak at the manifold, check engine light for the coolant sensor. The list went on and on, and he paid a premium price for it because it was suppose to be turnkey and clean. It baffles me how they noticed the U joint but somehow missed ALL of that, I really don't get it.

Good luck! I had a REALLY bad PPI at Lambo Sarasota. They didn’t disclose a reoccurring problem that they couldn’t solve (they had serviced the vehicle). It only happened after the car was running for about 30 minutes. It was in the service records that they “accidentally” gave me with the former clients information. Sure enough, it showed up there so they had clearly known about it. It took me two years to finally figure out what the problem was and fix it. Attorney wrote a letter, but never took the next step. I hate suing people, but probably should have.

I had Audi of Greenwich Connecticut do a PPI for an RS4 and told them the main concern was for the DRC. They inspected and said it was good. Started clunking on the way home and took it to my local Audi to find out the whole system was rusted and shot needing over 10k to replace. I sued the dealership and lost.

My first job was at a high end car shop. They did extremely through PPI inspections for their best customers. If something felt wrong they had a PI who was great at finding out the history of a car. One time a customer wanted to buy a 911 twin turbo slant nose that supposedly had low mileage. Our mechanic looked at the brakes and knew something wasn't right. The car had under 20k miles but looked a bit tired. Plus, it had brand new brake pads. The owner said that he never had them changed and there was nothing in the service records about it. Our mechanic noticed tool marks on the odometer cable too. It turned out that the car was often stored at another car shop across town that was owned by a friend of the car's owner. Our PI learned that the shop's owner often drove the 911 and would disconnect the odometer to keep the mileage from showing. When the shop's owner heard that the car would be sent to us for a PPI he quickly did a full service and changed the brakes. When our mechanic did a through examination of the engine wear it was estimated to have at least 50k in miles and not sub 20k. Our customer decided not to buy it and we heard that the owner sued the shop owner. We ended up building him a slant nose with a brand new 911 twin turbo he bought from the Porsche dealer.

Need to have my pre purchase inspection. I'm the only shop that performs oil analysis on every drive train fluid. Guaranteed your transaxle oil has a ton of clutch oil washed into it bringing the viscosity way low causing permenant ring gear and pinion damage! Check it out!

Most of these cars sit somewhere in not a perfect environment. They are not driven so their gaskets dry out. It is very common. That is why a low mileage car isn't always the best.

Don’t know if Anyone has said it or if you’ll see it but on my corvette(yes I know, not a ferarri) BUT has the same traction issue and it ends up being the diameter tire someone put on is wrong, it fits and you can drive but it throws off the car. Check tire size! Another cause could be steering wheel position sensor believing you are losing control at that speed and needs replaced.

Just had a similar situation. Bad PPI work, called them up, "we don't do PPI's....". I told them they did mine; to which they said it was the last PPI they will ever do. This is after having a dealership PPI with the vehicles intake and the car for almost a month.

Correct. 95% of cars are mass production vehicles made by giant companies with multi-billion dollar budgets for design, engineering, quality control, worker training, manufacturing tooling, production process control, supply chain procurement, and on and on. When you drive a Ferrari or similar exotic, you have to realize that you are driving a limited production exotic that was hand built and simply didn’t have the same amount of engineering resources put in to it as a regular car which is made in production runs of hundreds of thousands or millions. Have fun but always keep in mind, that Hyundai or Chevrolet next to you at the stop light had roughly ten times as many engineers involved in putting it on the road as your exotic. Driving an exotic is like dating a high strung super-model. It’s going to cost you.

i was a car inspector (and after that i did sales) for a few years, not seeing that bottom engine tray, means that they didn't put it on a bridge. The little dent on the door is a tricky spot, but if you gave me 4 hours, that could not be missed. The vents, i can 100% admit that alot of people would miss, including myself, since not alot of people would check the vents. Seat looks like it did 40-60000 miles, never with under 10000 miles. IMO, that mileage and those problems would for me defenately indicate mileage is not correct. It seems like a car that had alot of cheap repairs aswell.

Shops and dealers don't realize that a PPI is also an exercise in their familiarity and competency to gain business servicing the vehicle. Do a bad job at it and you won't see it again, especially with exotics. Rob isn't a big name in ownership but he is in service....and if he spreads word that a place is a buncha chooches....yeah the world will know.

I had a dealer do a PPI on a car I bought and they missed a broken engine mount that I found in about 10 minutes. In my case I didn't make a fuss, because I hadn't paid them to repair anything. I figured worst case, they'd either say "Oops" and stop talking, or maybe I'd get my PPI fee back, so I didn't bother pursuing it.

Grass came up good, even with the sub par topsoil.. went dormant...which is fine, irrigation system and a few sprays of the correct things can keep it green; if ya want to keep up with "The Jones' ".

Definitely seems shady. Alot of dealers dont expect people to do all the work to confirm the actual condition of the car. Hope you get some money back, even if the dealership just says 'hey we didnt know these problems' and just takes fault

I just went through something similar rob. Gm though not an exotic. They sold me a brand new Silverado that has sat at the port in the US (I live in Australia) for about a year during covid. I got a good deal but they never disclosed it needed repairs and just left me to discover them and they had to have known I would. Upon first service from my trusted mechanic he pointed it out to me. I thought new car they will fix it. They refused....they claimed the rust was caused by mechanics lift....in a day 🤣🤣. It got to the point where I needed to get my lawyers involved and as soon as I did they changed their tune pretty quick. Before they bought it back it also had the lifter and pushrod failure common with the Lt 4 engine. The worst thing a dealer can do is try get one over on a car guy. I told them I had built cars my whole life I know how long rust takes to set in. You left it at the port to rust....just admit it. They finally did and bought back. Only after lawyers were involved and sent a letter saying they are involved did it change I hate dealers with a passion. Will avoid blame at all costs unless hammered about it. Stand by your products ffs

Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... In the uk this would be a letter before claim under the pre action protocol! Don’t you get a dealer to check the modules in the car some modern gearboxes hold separate mileage to the ecu.

Rob I've had great success with Lucas PS stop leak. Obviously you don't want to half ass an Ferrari repair, but it'll tighten it up in the mean time and prevent further leaking.

Hey Rob have one of your Lambo tech go into the(obd port) PCM and read the odometer that way through the PCM cuz the PCM will have certain miles on it and it should match the odometer on this display if it doesn't then it's a rollback I've seen it before

I agree, this smells like all sorts of rollback mileage. Scary. Never go to dealers, go to trusted Indy specialists of that specific vehicle. Any idiot wet behind the ears gets hired at a dealer (even Ferrari) just because they talk their way into it, with little to no experience in many cases. Dealers want to collect, not overly pay out - and this includes their service technicians. A reputable indy specialist wouldn’t miss anything like this. I did a POST-purchase inspection on a 21 year old car with 180k miles and they were shocked it needed $4k worth of work. They were totally unreasonable. In your case, you are totally in the right. You didn’t go cheap on the PPI and specifically went FOR A PPI. You, at the very LEAST, should get your money back on the PPI. It was literally useless.

The gates are a good idea. But also keep in mind the guys stealing high-end cars in the NY/NJ area have in the past, taken gates apart or used other stolen vehicles to ram the gates open in order to get the cars out. The most important thing to do is keep your keys locked inside your house (not in your garage) and make sure your garage door openers aren't accessible (don't leave them in a car parked in the driveway).

Is the PPI agreement something they offered that specified what would be inspected? Or is it a PPI list you have come up with and pay the dealer to fulfill your personalized checklist? I agree with you, you did not receive the level of services you paid for. A thorough inspection would have discovered all those items. What checklist do they follow for trade ins/auction cars/lease turn ins/certified vehicles? None of this stuff would have made it past one of those inspections and I wouldn't consider those type of inspections to be as much scrutiny and time as a PPI. They simply didn't do what they had charged you for. That interior condition-wise looks like a dogs breakfast next to my 20 year old Lexus w 140k on it by the way.

Detecting a rollback odometer is easy peasy task... Just any decent obd2 reader/scanner and do ecu lookup iil shows the true odometer on ecu data instead of what shown on the odometer...

I mean may not be a roll back but they have mods that will stop all mileage on the odometer. So that odometer may be right BUT they just had the mod that allows no mileage added. Is it possible to pull the mileage from the Trans ?

Any professional shop no matter dealership or not will charge you no more than $200 to inspect test drive and check with scanner to give you estimates of repair and what's wrong with it, so they not only ripped you off but they scammed you misrepresenting major safety issues that could cost someone life!
