There's a trick to the rc10r that makes it a great looper. No reviews seem to highlight it. You first need a dual phase footswitch, for example the boss fs7. Make ctr1 and ctr2 memory up and down... now pick how many drum changes you want choose the patterns youd like to build your song. Write them to consecutive memory patches eg 123... now you have 6 drum patterns and 6 fills. When you mem up and down these will automatically play when the current loop completes the cycle it's playing. More parts to your songs... I've made songs with upto five parts using this method...thats 10 loops. If you use it live you can arrange all your drum tracks for a complete set. But really i use push 2 and ableton 11 suite for proper gigs.
@m0j0b0ne
@m0j0b0ne Жыл бұрын
I do this with a Jam Man Solo XT; I just never use the internal drum sounds except as a metronome. Very helpful to have the auxiliary footswitch to step through intro, verse, chorus, ending; you can even set the last loop in your sequence to fade, if you like. Still, it's a big drawback that you only have numbers for each loop rather than names; I have to keep a chart handy, but given only a 3 digit LED display, I gotta live with that, but I also get 200 slots up to 15 minutes each and 200 more on a card. I build the loops and backing tracks in my DAW at home and build the arrangements on the fly, at the gig, so if I want to solo over another chorus (or verse, bridge, interlude, whatever) I'm good to go. Feeding the Jam Man from a Zoom A3 acoustic preamp with a mic input greatly expands the possibilities for looping vocals and percussion.

Aaron, the world would be greatly improved if you were to do a short one on this part of it... I have a new 500 and have watched damn near every video there is, and I know it is possible to lay down verse/chorus, but I absolutely cannot make it happen. The only preference I can find is for the playback, nothing for the recording side. Every time I look at Track 2 it ends up on Track 1 regardless! Thanks much for the content you’ve already put up. I wanted to just get the 10R but there is just a sort of frantic quality to the drum tracks that I knew I would regret for the extra $50.

I almost got the 500, but I use a modeler, and my board is getting too big so I went with the RC10r. I use the MIDI functionality of the FM9 to pull up stored pads, backing tracks or looper presets on the RC10 automatically when I change song patches, and I can use the FM9 to control the looper functions, too. If real estate is limited, and a person does use a platform which has robust MIDI functionality, many of these more compact loopers can work pretty well.
@aaronshortmusic
@aaronshortmusic Жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark. I felt like the 500 wasn’t much bigger bad like to have the extra track. The 10r is ma cool pedal though and sometimes pedalboard real estate is limited like you said.

@@aaronshortmusic I think too, that somebody online - a reviewer - Andertons maybe, convinced me that the rhythm section was slightly more developed on the RC10, which may have been another consideration. If the unit didn’t have MIDI capability, it would have been a disappointment and I would have gone with a more capable unit. As with most all of these processor driven units these days, their limitations can be as much just the ability to control them. If I were looping vocals, the 500 would win just for the mic input (for example). Just a slightly different feature set, as you pointed out. MIDI opens a lot of doors for these little boxes, though. They cram so much into them, even the RC-5, it’s nice to have the ability to properly utilize and incorporate most of the features.

Great video Aaron!, I will love to have a small pedalboard with the TC Helicon Harmony G XT for vocal fx’s and harmonies, maybe the NUX Stageman for guitar Preamp and the RC 500 for looping, I own the Mesa Boogie Rosette, amazing preamp, but a little bit on the bigger side and no reverb built in, as a Ditto x4 owner, I can see the RC 500 in my pedalboard, les tap dancing, no double tap for stop, etc. IMHO the RC500 is the best looper around for a singer/guitar player. A valuable video for looper seekers! I had flirted with the RC-30 and nearly bought it, but was turned off by some of the negative market feedback and decided to wait for something better. Enter the RC-500, which I just unboxed and can’t wait to try! :-) Really looking forward to being able to tweak the backing drums to my taste as a solo acoustic performer. Definitely want to see more about your pedalboard soon! Now building my new one around a Boss VE-500 (vocal compression, EQ, reverb and harmonies) with an FS-7 dual footswitch for dedicated functions, my brand-new RC-500 for backing rhythms on about 50% of my my repertoire - perhaps with my FS-6 footswitch added for extra functions - and, as guitar preamps for 1-3 guitars (different types and tunings) either my Zoom A1 Four with various presets and/or my Carl Martin Acoustic Gig and/or my Elite Acoustics StompMix 4 (YES, I indeed have YOU to thank for that great recommendation!!!!) :-) Oh, and my Fire-Eye Red-Eye dual-input preamp is also a contender for that board. Not on board (pun intended) are the other devices you spoke of, and for some of the same reasons: BeatBuddy + Aeros + Midi Maestro. I‘m fed up with complexity in use and big set-ups. The BeatBuddy is superb, but if you don‘t set it up for „one-press songs“ that just run from part to part from beginning to end, then you have to keep remembering to hit the pedal at the right moments for transitioning and fills. Even with an external footswitch or the MidiMaestro, I find that adds a layer of complexity that is too much for me when I just want to be performing and immerse myself in the music. As for the Aeros, its potential is huge, but I totally agree with you that the software is still not quite where it needs to be...and I was an early adopter so have been waiting a great long time for this expensive device to get it right. Then there‘s the HUGE annoyance on both the Aeros and the Midi Maestro that the footswitches are really loud when actuated!!! Hate that, especially when trying to lay down a subtle loop in a quiet environment. The switches are loud, and the boxes are designed to reverberate and amplify that. No dampening, apparently. Really poor design. The Boss RC-500 does a MUCH better job on the switches. No gripes at all on them. I figure the RC-500 will give me all the basic functionality I‘ve been waiting to get out of the BeatBuddy + Aeros + Midi Maestro in a fraction of the size and with a much easier workflow. Even if I add an external dual footswitch, it‘s going to be more compact and efficient than the Singular Sound set-up. Not only that, but the Boss software is apparently more or less fine right out of the box, and the unit looks sexy, too. ;-)

Just made my final decisions and stuck all my devices on tonight and will cable them up tomorrow (with a Strymon Zuma as a power source for everything). The StompMix 4 - with its up to 10 switchable scenes - is going to come in really handy for different guitars, occasional duo gigs, etc. So happy you turned me onto that little marvel! The 500 is great. Regarding the RC-600, where do I begin. First of all, that bright large flashing eye light would give me a headache (it already is.) Who's idea was that? Imagine it at night- blinding. The ring would have been enough. It's far too big. Don't they do focus groups? Most musicians are looking for smaller, lighter footprints- not door stops. The upper right area is a complete waste of real estate. All that space (approx. 10"x4") just for 3 small buttons? It easily could have been made ~30% smaller. It should have been made black with brushed aluminum and nicer LED's as to at least differentiate it's appearance from the RC-500 and give it a more modern look. Still no touch-screen and relatively small non-HD screen. I'm sure it is capable with a million effects and inputs that most will never need or use, but I definitely would not buy this. I have an RC-500 that works great is about 1/4 the side and still quite capable. It has a great battery power option and nice physical volume sliders for each track. I don't like having to menu dive and be blinded by large blinking lights when I play. Looking at the specs, I don't see anything particularly compelling to make me select this over my RC-500- at all. If you need to loop a half dozen instruments at the same time- maybe but that probably wouldn't even sound good. Both this and the 500 offer nice 32-bit sound quality. With the 600, I believe that you even lose the convenience of battery power (no more fun camping jams plus it would not fit in my tent!)

I think I will go for the rc-10r? If I can you peel back overdubs if you mess up on a part. Don`t want to have to redo whole song if I mess up one small part on last track. Thats the way my old looper works! Got to redo everything from begining! No way to just get rid of last part. I want it more for writing songs and playing worship songs in my own style on. I been doing this with a digitech looper using a drum machine, and first adding drum parts on my looper, and just playing the rhythm guitar, keyboard, bass parts on to it. But with the looper I have now, I can`t peel back and redo if I mess up, have to re-put drums,and everything from beginning! So , if I can`t peel back if I mess up that will probably be a deal breaker. I want to be able write the song the way I want on the rc-10r , then save them on my other looper, that does have lots of storage room, and then I would play the finished song through my PA, to use for performing worship at my small church. I do need the intro`s, fills, and endings which is hard to program on my drum machine! Great video! Was a bit hesitant to buy the rc-10r because of the bad comments about it, but you have helped put me at ease! If I can peel back the tracks I put on, I am for sure buying this thing, because it seems perfect for my needs! Thank You!

Thanks for the review Aaron! I'm interested in picking up a looper primarily as a songwriting tool. My only concern with the 500 would be a lack of drum options. Are you able to go in and customize the drum loops on the 500, or are you essentially stuck with 57 pre-made beats?

Had the 500 for a couple weeks and while you can't customize or create beats from scratch the included beats are pretty customizable. There's 2 variations on every preset, and you can also turn on or off any of 5 parts in each preset. That combined with tempo and I've found so far I can make what i'm looking for. I will say that out of the box I was not thrilled, but once i got into customizing it, which you can do extensively with all three footswitches, and save for each memory, Im starting to love it.

Aaron, I appreciate what you say at 5.05 about how a cymbal at the end of every bar “gets really old really quick”, but can you please clarify this a little more? You say “it’s not really a problem because you’d never record a one bar loop”. Do you mean the 10R puts a cymbal at the end of every BAR or at the end of every LOOP (or both)? We hear the cymbal as you close your (one bar) loop, which suggests it’ll be there at the end of every loop regardless of length. On a short loop this will clearly be problematic but I normally play quite long verse/chorus type loops of differing length so the cymbal might not matter, but just to clarify; do you mean it ALWAYS puts a cymbal in at the end of each LOOP? My current rig uses a Pigtronix Infinity and a SDRUM but this involves different power supplies, lots of connections and a lot of pedal board real estate. I like the look of the RC10R mainly for its compact size but also because (I'm told) the 10R has more comprehensive onboard drums than the 500. For example the concept of 'transition fills' on the RC10R seems exciting in a live performance, will the RC500 at least give you transition fills? Anyway thanx for a great demo.
@aaronshortmusic
@aaronshortmusic 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dennis. The 10R is such a fun pedal but there is no drum mixer like in the 500 and it adds this cymbal crash at the end of the loop. If your loop is 32 bars then it could be pretty cool but if your loop is 1 bar then it just gets annoying.
@dennisloobman
@dennisloobman 2 жыл бұрын
@@aaronshortmusic Ok well that’s just as I thought, but I’m told the 10R DOES have a whole lot more drum patterns. Besides I’m intrigued by the prospect of drum fills, particularly at the end of a bar and when changing loops. My understanding is that the 10R can do this while the 500 can’t. I assume it’ll need more ‘hardware’ to do this, so more space will be taken up on the pedalboard. Midi seems a better option that an FS3 footswitch, but my question would still have to be; just how ‘good’ is this drum machine and is it really any ‘better’ than the 500? I’m sure there are lots of us who’d like to know more on this, perhaps you might want to do a more in depth review of the 10R in comparison with the 500 (and with particular regard to the drum machine section) before you flog it on eBay.

Hi Aaron! I'm a loopers lover and right now I'm doubting between Singular Sound Aeros or RC-500. Of course I know they are completely different. But I have a doubt that does not let me sleep! does the RC-500 allow you to go from one slot to another (for example from 6 to 7, then from 7 to 8 and from 8 to 6) without pauses? in other words: can I mount a song on 5 different slots? I also wonder: is it possible to change slots when you finish a loop and want to start another, without crouching to the ground? I mean, with your feet? (for example from slot 5 to 67) I can currently do this with the Digitech JamMan, but it's not a very reliable live pedal ... Thanks a lot in advance!! cheers from Barcelona :-) leo

Hi Leo! I tried this today. When you change presets (you can assign a foot switch or midi footswitch to do this) the looper does continue at the same tempo!
