The reason Wolfstar works so well is because it's not without foundation. There's no real implication that they weren't together. Their falling for each other is implied in the story, if subtly, and shipping Wolfstar doesn't contradict canon at ALL. If anything it enhances it. The Dumbledore-Grindelwald thing, which came from JKR herself, does contradict canon, as does Drarry. But with Wolfstar it keeps it perfectly intact without messing up any of the storyline.

I think that for a lot of these same reasons Sirius would choose not to label his sexuality. Throughout his upbringing Sirius was forced into certain rolls and told what he should and shouldn’t be, once he began going to hogwarts I think he’d want to be free from that and wouldn’t want to push yet another label on himself. I'm not saying that Sirius wasn't gay, but as a gay man I have to say that some of your evidence is extremely flawed because it's based on a horrible stereotype. You also don't consider the whole picture which makes some of your information false. For example, cross dressing is very common in British performing arts and had been for ages. Not just women dressing as men but vice versa as well. Queercore didn't start until the mid 80s, well after Sirius is out of Hogwarts and at that point he's been in Azkaban for a few years as Harry would be around 4/5 years old, so I doubt he knows it exists. Also, the whole "Dancing Queen" allusion is horrible because it depends on an inaccurate stereotype of being gay equating to being effeminate. Also, if you're straight, calling a gay man a "queen" even in an indirect way is wrong. That's not your word to use. Also, the idea that people were suddenly extremely open about being gay is wrong. Especially since being out often caused people to be targets of violence, people lost their jobs, families, and homes. Unless there was a protest, the community at large was still very much underground. The few people who were out often had nothing to lose because they had been disowned by their families and were homeless, had unorthodox/illicit employment, or otherwise weren't in economic danger because they lived in an LGBT co-op or something similar. This was also during the HIV/AIDS crisis so people had to be doubly careful as hospitals and doctors would often turn away LGBT patients. People would literally die in the street. Cops offered no protection since they were often also beating up LGBT folks for fun basically. If you got arrested at a protest, you had to hope that the cop didn't crack your skull open, beat you to a pulp, and in some cases rape you. Corrective rape was and still is a huge problem among the queer community. Personally, I read Sirius as gay through his interactions with Remus and James instead of relying on a negative stereotype that's used to cause harm especially at that time. In the 70s and 80s queer people started to make progress fighting for our rights and respect. However it was by no means safe for us and being LGBT was still viewed as highly negative and wrong. We just got tired of living in the shadows in fear, letting ourselves be mistreated, abused, and dependent on the mercy of others.

I mean, it became part of the fashion style of the 70s, that only shows how it popularized it. It was not common to have extremely famous and mediatised artists that cross-dressed at that time. While he was not the only one, David Bowie is known to have made a huge impact on this. And the context is also extremely important : cross-dressing in SOME arts was part of the culture, of the norm. Theatre actors would cross-dress, and put on make-up, but it was part of the show and had nothing to do with sexuality and gender norms. When David Bowie did it, the only explanation he gave was "I just want to dress like that, and I don't see why I couldn't". It was political. It's very different. And the reactions to it made it very clear : while actors cross-dressing were commonly accepted since centuries (and by accepted I mean tolerated, they still faced critics, insults etc because of it, but on a general point of view, it was integrated), David Bowie encountered plenty of insults, homophobia, and general violence because of his cross-dressing. He would be categorised as "the fag" (something he actually said in an interview).

And punk was, ever since the beginning, extremely linked to LGBT culture. Ok can I add something The reason I think Sirius dated Remus is because if you read the books you see the fact that Remus only got with Tonks AFTER Sirius died. Like it is said that she had been trying to get with him for a while but he refused but then when Sirius died he finally accepted being with her. Also the 46 line stare. The 46 line stare is in OOTP while they are sitting at the table and it is said that Remus started staring at Sirius 46 lines later Remus finally stopped staring. Lastly we have no clue what happened when they were at Hogwarts they could have been in a relationship that was so secret that no ones knew but them. People ague this by the fact that Sirius possibly dated Marlene McKinnon but what if Marlene and Sirius dating was a cover up for both of them. Sirius may have gotten into punk rock nearer the end of his hogwarts years, but I think for the most part he’d be much more into glam rock. It was around in the early to mid 70s, almost spanning the whole time Sirius was at hogwarts, and while it was just as rebellious as punk, it feels even more androgynous and almost more... elegant I guess? I think that although Sirius rebels against his family, he still retained some of their glamour and elegance that was much more suited for glam rock than for punk. Old video but I want to comment anyway: As far as I'm concerned, the reasons why JKR didn't make him gay officially is because a) She didn't flesh out his character enough to really think about it (in a lot of ways, he's presented as quite one-dimensional in the books and the 'he was too rebellious to get married' argument doesn't even adress his sexuality) b) She's a straight white woman herself who clearly modeled the character after her own life rather than thinking about making the books diverse.
