Why I bought a Gravely ZT HD 52

I recently purchased a Gravely ZT HD 52” mower. I looked at just about all the other brands and models and ended up buying the Gravely ZT HD. Watch and see why I chose this one!

I bought a HDZT 52 new in 2015, other than regular maintenance and replacing the belts it has never failed me, we have a little over 2 acres of yard i can get it all done in 1.50 hours. When i was using the tractor and 6 foot finish mower and had to use a weed eater it would take me 5 hours to do it right. I haven't even started the weed eater since i bought the Gravely.

Just picked on up last week as a backup/smaller property mower for our commercial mowing operation. It’s nicely built for light commercial, good cut quality. My only complaint is that it’s a bit slow compared to our big commercial rigs but it’s hard to go wrong at the price and our 36” Gravely ProWalk Hydro walk behind has proven to be an indestructible beast of a mower.

I've had a ZT HD for about 10 years. Its been great so far. I have the FR 730 in mine. no problems. One thing I wish it had would be a more comfortable seat( like one you have.) The spindle bearings dried up after around six or seven years so I replaced those but other than that its been great. Good luck !

Bought an Ariens Apex 52 w/Kohler 23 hp. My reviews showed to have more positives especially rubber vs. plastic and forged metal instead of cast. I love my Briggs and Stratton motor on my present lawn tractor but the chassis just won’t stay together. Believe me I have been grooming this three acres for the past 20 years from rocks,prickly pears,mesquite,Johnson grass etc. into a manageable turf. In the meantime my mowers have taken their toll with weak spindles, flat tires,twisted blades,motor problems,mower deck welds , transmission problems so got tired of mowing one time and fixing 3 times. Seemed to never get through. BTW belt problems and pulleys and height adjustment. My brother has one and the only problem he had was bogging down while cutting near the barn in some virgin area and hitting a pile of flower wire wreath stands and sheared the transmission pin in the left transaxel. Replaced for >$800 so be careful with the mower it can be expensive and time consuming to cut without taking the time to police up an area.

My Zt-HD 52 5 year old. Still going Strong. I cut about 30 acres week during grass seasonal. 421 hrs as of now on my mower. I do my maintenance when needed. I replace my blade once month. If you sharper your blades make sure balance blades...i dont sharper my blades I just changes it. Blades lot cheaper then spindles. I change oil every 40 hrs and oil & air filter....take care your baby and God bless !! 😎

Thanks for the video. I just bought one and only have 9 hours on it. It's a great machine. My first experience was very scary. It was delivered in the rain and the guy just told me all about it and explained the controls. So I never tried it and never been on one before. I read the manual and with the mower in the garage I started it at half throttle. (The garage is large but has twin doors so it has a partion in the middle. Anyway, I pushed the arms forward and headed traight for the outer wall. (still at half throttle or more) I quickly jerked the other arm and now I was headed for the other wall. I'm nearly panicked and pulled hard on the left arm and did a complete circle. Thankfully I was able to get the thing out of the garage with out ripping the house down. All this and the clock only had .04 on it. My only regret is that I didn't buy the 60" that was available but I reasoned I had a lot of trees and the 52 would be better around them. I would buy this again in a heatbeat.

I purchased the Ariens zero. The rattling is from the metal shout against the deck and the scalp wheels . But the mower cuts great and turns on a dime. I’m going to upgrade the seat with a aftermarket. Overall happy with the mower .

Good deal! I had an issue with excessive vibration in the belts. They had to replace a couple of pulleys. But yes, there is a lot of rattle in the deck and the anti-scalping rollers.

Good job on the video. I wanted to point out another benefit about your mower that I did not hear you mention. That would be the front axles are offset, meaning your front tires are offset from the spindles and partially offset from the rear tires which gives a better cut. I noticed that right away with the front view of the mower. That’s definitely something I’m interested in when I’m ready to buy.

I own a 2021 and I love it.. it fits in a lot of smaller areas. But the thing cuts! Only issue is the oil sensor on the kawi. It leaks oil.. have to pull it and put some Teflon tape on it. Or it weaps oil.correction I have the zx proturn but if your getting oil leakage.. check that sensor. Just above the oil filter

@@HisWayHomesteadDue to unforeseen circumstances, I had to sell my Hustler. It was a great mower. But I just ended up buying a new 2023 Gravely ZT HD 60 on Friday, 03-22-2024. I feel like I got a good deal on it and couldn’t pass it up. My dealer gave me the Gravely “Mow the Distance” sales event price that starts next week. The Gravely ZT HD is the best bang for your buck when compared to a comparable Hustler model, which would be the Raptor XDX 60. It’s a no brainer.

From other videos I’ve watched, the rattling sound could be your spindle covers on your deck. Spartan mowers were having that problem so they went to either plastic or rubber covers.

Great video, and ribs! I'm leaning towards the ZT HD52 also. They look very well built. Those aluminum spindles will dissipate heat faster than cast iron which is great for the bearings. Are your front wheels & wheel spindles greasable?

Kawasaki had problems also eating valves. The Gravely engine has been great so far had it 5 years and 130 hrs no issues. Love my Mower has been like a tank.

I just replaced a spring used to put tension on the mechanical brake that cost about that much. A little short spring which is not hard to put on if you use the right technique but, if you don't use the right replacement method, it can be a bear. Wondering which one you had put on.

hey brother i just used My zt hd 52 went around light pole and ahhhh crap 2.1hrs a scratches on My trim SIDE now i have to get a can of primer and gravely paint tractor supply has it ive been told she started to creep foreard with break off the dealer i bought it from claims it normal i disagree at 2.1 hrs so i called another dealer and he said half and hours labor and pick up and delivery 175.00 can't beat it but at least i'tll be right ive watched the videos from ariens co the apex same thing and purging the hydros is a challenging chore but i have a long time before that happens but at 10 hrs first oil change i saw your video For the oil change i used to take a nail and hammer and tap a small hole in filter with pan under it but brother when i saw you trying to get filter off i'm like wow better get myself a strap type filter wrench the dealer we're i got it from put a 300cca battery in free of Charge original 190cca wasnt good but now she cranks like no tommarrow i'm going to get suspensión SEAT they put on Fisher barton Blades witch are awesome Even got the entry asdist handle the mower cover trailor hitch floor mat Even got tire foam mcguires wax plastic polish this thing is a beast i went to start it today on slow full choke and nothing no choke and fired up i'm going to start it from now on at half throttle and full choke with warm temps comming soon might not half to choke it as much when cold but She's also going to get the Donaldson canister air filter from power equiptment man .com 219.00 and filter minder 57.00 i'm trying to persuade the girlfriend to let me put a snowplow on and She's like no beeping way she has an Aries s snowblower but I'd rather sit and let gravely do the work for me ha ha I don't know if you remember what gravely originally was noted for was there walk behind tractors and snow cannon plus all the other attachments they have a lot of videos on them man those suckers were no joke i still want the pro 16 with the cast iron Kohler or cast iron 16 Briggs

How much land do you have and how long does it take you to mow? I have about 2 acres and I’m on the fence about 52” and the 60”

I about 3-3.5 acres and it takes me about 3 hours. Used to take me over 6-7 hours on my lawn tractor. The 52” will give you a nicer cut on non-flat lawns than the 60” because the 60” will span over the gullies. I don’t think it makes that much of a difference to be honest. Either way you can’t go wrong!

If you don't operate the engine speed high enough the deck will make more noise. I've got a Hustler Fas trak 54 and it does the same thing.

True…. This was rattling at high speed as well. The dealer replaced some pulleys and now it’s not as bad. There is a lot of retype from the deck plate.

I also had to raise my anti scalp wheels up as her lawn is 3 inches or below 1.75 the standard seat has nice padded arm wrests I wish they would put those on the suspension seats the Aries apex has flat padded arm wrests and gravely slightly different but I love that seat on yours they just went up in price again I saw one for 857.00 I'm like ouch trac seats is 700.00 man they ain't cheap what was the name of the dealer were you got yours and if so there phone number as I would like to see if they have a suspension seat in stock none around here in Buffalo NY they tell me they can't just order one it has to be a four pack hope it's nice in Tennessee oh mine has the snap on pulley covers on my deck I wanted. the 60 deck she said your out of your mind I'm used to them 52 talks a little while but originally I was going to buy a ferris 500s 52/61 but the dealers were jerks and I really wanted it because of there suspension on the chasis but content with the gravely thanks to Grandma and grampa leaving bonds rip gram and gramp there up there smiling down at me miss them and no my dad has lymphoma just hit 77 also afib and leaky heart valve prayers prayers prayers he started chemo just hope he makes it through and has a few more birthdays and he quit the pall malls at 40 and i have to quit myself at 55 not a kid so im going to do it wish i never started everyone in family excet a few all did but it time to get back to good heallth

During that time they put 2 gas tanks o it. So if you ran out of fuel you just switch o er to the other side. Now my plans are to keep it until the trumpet sounds. God bless you.

Yeah, I love it! If you have a big flat yard, the 60” would be great, but our land is not flat and there are a lot of obstacles to avoid so the 52” really is better for us.

oh forgot to mention bro go to your gravely dealer and swap out the standard Blades and get a ser of Fisher barton Blades there a comercial high lift they put on the gravely comercial modelos and fit they zt hd and ariens apex modelos marbain titanium alloy hardened Steel i have um on mine and Holly mamba wamba the cut like a razor Blades through cheese and stay that sharp For a long long long time

Maybe the HD 52 is better but I got the 2023 Gravely ZT x 42 with bagger (not power bagger). It's AWEFUL!! Do NOT get this one! The mower blows grass, leaves, debris all out of ALL sides of the mower including in front which goes RIGHT into your face and eyes as you drive right into the debris being throwing out in front of the mower! It's absolutely awful. I was advised to slow the mower engine/speed and that will fix it and it did nothing! The bagger is the 1st time Gravely did their own and it's AWFUL. The bags are WAY too far behind the mower so if you're driving along side of a structure or fence, you can't just turn away from the structure normally b/c the bags are so far behind the mower, turning normally, the bags crash up against the structure. Literally the only good thing about the Gravely ZT 42 is the Kawasaki engine. The deck lowering is lame and I often can't see the numbers when adjusting while mowing. I'm selling this mower despite having it for only ONE season!!!

theres a place on line called power equiptment man .con the have the Donaldson canister 3 stage air filter tales give minutes to install also Buy the filter minder as it tells You when they need changed you'll be happy You did i just bought the same mower as an ariens apex is the same thing a little less in price same warranty difference color but the gravely comes with the rubber collors under the SEAT sort of a little dampening For bumps but if the wife Will let You as You only live once great yourself to the full suspensión SEAT and suspensión front forks i'm doing it on mine and making My own inch thick floor mat oh and agri fab has a snowplow the mounts to castet forks we can't let that Big baby snore in the garage gotta push some snow and chains on back tires and yee haw oh and For leaves if wifey Will let You get a Cyclone rake SEE it in action on KZbin the xl and z10 night have to rake her out For the evening For a night on the Town and some lovey dovey and i'm pretty sure you'll be in like flint don't forget the roses and champagne and her favorita snacks the owned she can't live with out hmmm god bless
