We recently featured both Gary's planes on the channel. A Lancair 360 and Lancair IVP. These are some of the fastest piston airplanes in the world. And Gary as a private pilot built the 360 and bought the 4 seater for longer trips.

As owner of a Skystar Pulsar III, the Lancair 360 is aspirational for me. If I were willing to sacrifice some other costly interests to provision owning 2 planes, it would be these 2 Lancairs. Bravo Brother for a life well lived!

comp sci represent. It's interesting that the 4P is relatively heavy. That just means it's possible to make a plane that's even significantly better than the already top of the crop plane. At 539km/h cruise, it can basically keep up with a Cirrus Visionjet. So imagine even better. So much potential in affordable GA

Nice to see Spruce Creek again. I lived there in the mid 80s. There was a lot of home-building going on. I helped a couple of neighbours (Terry MacDonald and Bob Conn) build one of the first Lancair kits (# 15, I think). An O 225 would push it at 145 kn, no problem. The fellow in the interview is absolutely right “stall” speed was 50 mph but the sink rate below 85 was wicked. Approach speed critical for a good (survivable) landing.

1996-2006 IV-P, $275,000-$300,000. Pressurized speed machine. Maximize the performance in the low to mid 20,000' altitudes, which means an anti/de-icing system, and an instrument rating. 1550-pound useful load. 90-gallons of fuel, so with full-fuel (90-gal X 6.5 lbs/gal = 585 lbs) drop that useful load to 965 lbs. That's still an impressive payload number.

Do you have any suggestions regarding obtaining flight proficiency in the IV-P? At only 110hrs (mostly Piper and Cessna) and working towards an IFR, what was your path to being a safe IV-P pilot? Did you purchase the IV-P and train exclusively with it, or do you carry a lot of low performance aircraft hours?

When I was getting my license in the 1970's, I flew in and out of some busy airports. It seemed more normal than not that I would hear something like "9433 Uniform keep your speed up on final, sir", or "Cleared without delay". One time, I lost electrical (actually, more than once), and had to do a flapless final. Considering my history, the landing seemed a little busy, but not much different than any other day. My instructor always used to say "Speed and altitude, they're like money in the bank." Guess that's why I keep things a little hot, and/or high.

RDD Lancair LX7, has a better wing and slotted flaps, cures all that hot approach speed problems. Either way insurance on this plane is 15,000$ a year, even with that you can’t even get insurance on the Lancair IV-P “from anybody” unless you got a “thousand hours” minimum.

With now the experience of building the avionics panel is there a way to get the reliability of the wiring connections. + keep them in colour coded harnesses? + stop corrosion of plugs? + antivibration of Garmin instruments. A lot still like a six-pack. I keep telling myself Aviate, Navigate and communicate! Don't confuse with multiple visual screens. 👀🧭

I don't wish to be rude, but I have to say I don't think much of your piloting skills. About twenty years ago I did a half-hour demo flight in the Lancair IVP factory demonstrator, which went around to various airshows to promote this plane when the design was new. I did stalls, both level and in turns in both the clean and dirty configuratons and found all to be relatively benign and easily manageable. When was the last time you went up with a check pilot and stalled the airplane in all configurations for practise? I think you are approaching WAY TOO FAST! The Lancair IVP I flew stalled at 62 knots in the landing configuration (gear down, full flaps, cowl flaps open, prop full fine). While the IVP is definitely a "trim airplane" that has to be retrimmed in pitch and yaw with each configuration change, rI found it elatively easy to fly final approaches at 1.3 to 1.4 Vso with power on, or 81-87 knots in smooth air. You also should be able to configure the airpane to fly straight and level or shallow turns of about 15 degrees back in slow flight, in that same speed range. If not, take some lessons.

@@calebmiller6611 I thnk you meant to write '"seems" like an arrogant comment, since you can't hear what I wrote! Apparently you didn't read the entire post. I'm not arrogant at all ... okay ... maybe a little. But my comments aren't based in arrogance. Rather, they're the result of my experience flying the same type of aircraft. This pilot seems a bit scared of the airplane's low-speed end, which is one explanation for the higher than desired approach speeds up around 100 knots. High wind speed/gusts are another. That's part of why I suggested he fly all kinds of stalls (power on/off, landing gear up/down, flaps deployed/retracted, wings level/in turns or accelerated stalls.) And learn to recover from unusual attitudes. Oh, by the way, are you a licensed pilot like me? Have you ever flown a lancair IV, like me? Or complex single- and twin-engine aircraft, like me? Or any other airplane? Note: RC models and paper airplanes don't count. Nor does chair time in your man cave "flying" MS Flight Simulator. If the answer is no to one or all questions, then who really cares what you think, Caleb?
