Hey y'all I'm back with another video and today it's about the Nikon D3s, one of the best camera's I've ever used and an absolute workhorse for me. I own one in 2020 and I'm going to lay out the reasons why I own one and why you should consider picking one up. It makes a great second or first body and will make anyone extremely happy to own, it's a reliable workhorse that gets the job done and you can rely on it to do whatever job you throw at it. I also practiced some b-roll and I'm quite proud of this video. So let me know about what you think of the video and what I can do to improve. Constructive criticism is always welcomed and I would love to get your feedback on it. Anyways thanks for watching, comment, rate, and subscribe and I'll catch y'all in the next one.

Recently got a D3s to go with my D500. Makes the D500 feel like a toy. Not fussed about lugging around that pro body because it's a pleasure to use. He's a heavyweight boxer with killer reflexes, machine-gun shutter, and the results are always awesome. The D500 is a greyhound: Tight, light and just as fast. They both have their strengths, and feel like thoroughbreds at their own game. Great video. Greetings from Australia.

Yes the Nikon D3s is one of the best Nikon cameras. I had a Nikon D5 the picture quality wasn't better. At low ISO values, the best image quality is the Nikon D3x. The Nikon D3s is also a perfect war reporter camera. I have transported them 1000 kilometers in a backpack with a motorcycle at all speeds up to 300 kmh. No malfunctions or defects. Also in 2021 there is always a perfect camera that doesn't have to hide. And my Nikon d3 x is one of the best cameras ever. I never want to miss them again. She takes such good pictures, with the Nikon 105 1.4E it is unimaginable.

The Project Photography I’m loving this beast of a camera. I’ve been up in the mountains of Tucson AZ shooting landscapes. I love the full frame sensor. I’m purchasing the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200 f/2.8E FL ED VR next week. I only have Dix lenses at the moment, which is no problem really, they work fine with the image area set to crop, but it’ll be really nice to use that highly regarded Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 and use the full sensor. I’ll let you know how it goes!
@ImTheBlade65
@ImTheBlade65 3 жыл бұрын
So I’m still loving this Hallmark of a Nikon camera. I purchased the Nikkor 70-200 FL ED VR and it’s magical. Also added the Prime 105mm f 1.4 and that is truly a joy to use for portraits and corporate events, weddings etc. Also bought a Nikon D4 and that’s a workhorse as well. Between the two I’m well equipped for a variety of shooting situations. I still get antsy every so often about the whole techno pixel thing. So many people tell me that I should sell off my D3s and my D4 and put the money towards a D850. But of course I’d then have to buy the battery grip and a venerable ton of memory cards. I listened to one photographer talk about his first experience shooting with the D850 and he said he was swapping memory cards like magazines in an M16 assault rifle! What are your thoughts on shooting a wedding with my D4 and maybe a couple more Primes like the 28mm or the 35mm. I shot one wedding so far as the “backup” photographer. My close friends hired a photographer before thinking of me, so they ok’d it with the official “hired” photographer for me to shoot as well. They said that they liked my pics better than the “hired” photographer, but I think they were appreciating my artistic ability more than examining the photos for resolution etc. isn’t it funny, how if you capture a moment that’s moving, no one seems to notice the technical aspects. One of my favorite images ever is Robert Doisneau Hotel D’Ville,. It’s grainy and out of focus and one of the most celebrated romantic images of the 20th century. Thanks so much for the encouragement regarding these great cameras.

Great review! I still do have Nikon D3, D3s, D4s, and recently added D750. Regarding Nikon's professional cameras, there is no such thing as worries when it comes to reliability. I have never had a failure during shoots over more than a decade, and I have shot as long as 13 hours straight. I started the digital photography world with Nikon D1x. It was a great camera when it came to ergonomics, transitioning from Nikon F5, which still is my favorite film camera that I still have. However, Nikon D2x was a disappointment with the crop sensor because Canon already had a full sensor camera by then. When D3 came out, I delayed purchasing it until I realized that images from Nikon D2x were so shitty compared to a semi-pro Canon camera in low-light that I purchased Nikon D3 the next day. Ever since then, I became a happy camper with Nikon although I was really pissed at Nikon due to a representative from a Javit Center Photo Show lying to me about Nikon not going to FX format and coming out with it within three months after I purchased my Nikon D2x. I lost A LOT of money then. All because of Nikon's nonexistent reliability issue with their professional cameras, I bought used D3s and D4s. I still used them without worries unlike my newly purchased D750. I am keeping D750 because of its low-light performance, the high megapixel count, and the tilt screen. If you are starting out professionally, I strongly suggest a used Nikon D750 for its low light capability and functionality. But for reliability and low light performance, hands down Nikon D3, D3s, D4, D4s, D5, and D6.... Something that I've learned over the years is that there is no need to buy new professional digital bodies. It is because the pro bodies are all built to last, so you will not going to have an issue unless the previous owners abused the shit out of the cameras. And, you will have a ton of money left over in your pocket... BTW, there is a notable difference between Nikon D3 and D3s. Nikon D3 does not have a video function, while Nikon D3s can shoot video. If you are going to buy a cheap pro body, go with Nikon D3s or Nikon D4s. Just know that Nikon D4s has significantly better autofocus compared to Nikon D3s and better low-light autofocus performance. For a low budget, D3s.

@@mdunivanphotography3834 well from what I've read and what I've seen the d850 is way better than McGee 800 I had a D800 before it got stolen. But it was really lacking and smudging and sharpness detail at times. The d850 probably is a little bit better I would not know. You certainly have a solid camera and way better video features. The D3 which was an amazing camera might be fun but it's just too heavy and the battery tech. Has moved on. I'm trying to decide now between a Fuji xt3 or maybe a micro 4/3. I just don't have that type of budget but those cameras can definitely perform and for most work you could barely see a difference. Side note D600 and the d750 seem to both have too many problems. I would pick up a d700 for fun today. Prices are good now used

I have a Sony a6100 24mp and the D3s. Everything you said is true. I love my D3s for the same reasons you do. It is the Toyota Land Cruiser of Digital Cameras. It's ISO is so great it can practically see in the dark. It has great low ISO pictures down to the Basement as well. The camera is literally a TANK. Literally. Marine Photographers took it into battle and showered with the thing.l The camera has a body that can literally stop a bullet or take a bullet and take a picture of it after it's dug out of the body with a razor knife. The one I have has over 2 million clicks on it and it only needs an occasional Sensor Cleaning. The Live View is 920,000 pixel 3 inch display that is Razor sharp. The original SRP was $4999.99 but I bought mine for 10% of that. It loves all the old lenses that save you money and unless you are doing Billboards or Movie Posters the 12.87 MP is plenty for even the nicest wedding pictures. It truly is a camera that I love having and even if it weighs 2.75 Lbs (Body Only) or 1.240 kg. so it isn't light. But you could throw it across the street, let a car run over it and then leave it in a forest fire and then let the fire department put it out with a high pressure fire hose and still take a picture of the guy that put it out. It's a Tank. The colors are pure and the lenses fit sweet. It's was amazing in 2010 but it's still has it's magic a decade later.

The only camera on record that had stopped a bullet and saved a photographer's life (Don McCullin) was the Nikon F. Personally, I only found my D3 that was purchased in 2008, similar in size & weight as my first SLR (Nikon F2A + Motor Drive + Battery Pack) four decades ago. Although the setup is lighter when shooting with the D3, since I don't have to pair it with an external hammerhead flash & battery pack. 😊

I know some photographers have a good reason to want and need high megapixel cameras, but I still think there are a lot of photographers who don't but think they do, and camera makers push this as a selling point. I have the D500 which is my main sports camera and I can crop the files from this, even though it's only 20 mp. I also have the D700 at 12mp, but this camera is mainly used for general day to day stuff that I can frame without the need for cropping. I'm now in the market for a D3s as a second sports camera, mainly for use with a 70-200mm for action that comes close, so also no need for (much) cropping. There are probably better choices, but I've always wanted one and the price of them now is excellent. Maybe an early birthday present to self next year. 😁

In the age of phones, facebook, and Instagram (Facebook maxes out at 2048x1536 or thereabouts, Instagram maxes out at 1920x1200 or thereabouts) megapixels arguably matter less today than they ever have. You've got tons of people going back to the old 6MP APS-C DSLRs for the colors those old CCDs could provide, because megapixels matter less than they ever have. And these new extreme resolution sensors make every little detail that much more critical. Things like camera shake, lens quality, autofocus accuracy, etc. On the A7R IV, 5-axis IBIS + optical stabilization that can work in tandem has become something of a *necessity* - it's not just a gimmick anymore. And the more pixels they pack into the same space, the more ISO noise you get. Less is more. It definitely still applies today.

I have made 11x14 inch prints from a D40, 6 MP only. Only problem I ever had was water incursion from a leaking bottle when I took off the angle finder and did not replace the outside original one. It was replaced so I am back to two D3 and one D700.. D800E is incredible, but image is not better in my common 11x14 and smaller prints.

The D3/s and The EOS 1D MK4 are two great cameras I currently use The EOS 1 D MK4 but both are all you need both take older AF lenses and have last for years due to the solid construction . The sensors are good and image quality is better than any cropped sensors even today even The 1D mark 4 with it's 1.3 x crop you won't notice any difference to a full frame it had a hybrid sensor and a 102000 ISO the dynamic is great even in low light the menu may be a bit different to what you expect you just have to get used to it . The D 3s is a straightforward DSLR with a more easier menu if your not used to professional cameras and has basically the same specs . To choose one it a very tough choice I grabbed The Canon because it was available at the time used with a good PX I have no biased opinion about either camera just to let you know that I don't like to compare like other churlish remarks that "Camidiots" do on you tube.

They can be found for a fraction of their new cost and they have been looked after also a fraction of the lastest type versions . I.E Canon EOS1D mk4 new cost 3750 GBP in 2010- today you can pick one up in mint condition for between 400-1000 depending how much ego related sellers and price they are charging -I bought mine for 399 GBP with all the original supplied accessories books CD software etc in mint condition from a chain high Street retailer plus a six month warrantee.

I did that with a Nikon D300 and bought a D7200 and found out the sensor can be subject to oil from the shutter and mirror assembly. I switched to Canon not that wanted to but had a a deal at the time I would like a brand new Nikon D300 or D 3 or D 700 ( or one version of them but they don't make them now. One point I will make DSLRs from about 2009-2012 approx was actually a milestone the cameras now are too gimmickry and this dont allow much scope for the photographer to use his own skill . You get these so-called reviewers thinking that they are the cream most of them are just promoting for their own vested and marketing interests. I am convinced that 16mp on a 1.3 crop hybrid sensor (EOS 1D mk4 ) is good enough even my Old Nikon D300 put out great images on 12mp . The older high end stuff is still hard to beat I have done commercial landscapes weddings architecture using these cameras and no client have questioned what gear I used so why bother listening to the photo snobs or marketing guru

I definitely agree in the sense that KZbinrs have great motivation to sell newer equipment because they get a payday from selling these products. The only cameras do just fine and when it comes to the Nikon/Canon flagship rivalry, it only depends on what ecosystem you're in. Both cameras do pretty much the same thing (generally speaking). I think people will be glad with these older gems and it helps when people point them out to other people to give them options.

Actually the main reason I would choose the D3s over the D3 is the buffer. Nikon offered a buffer upgrade on the D3 where you would send it in and they would upgrade the buffer on the camera. There is no way to know if you are getting a D3 with a buffer upgrade unless the seller specifically knows it was serviced. I was doing some research not too long ago and I plan on picking up a D4/D4s (depending on price) because if has a far better buffer. My main working camera is a D750 and though the quality is great the buffer does not always keep up. The D3s has great output and I would pick one up if the price is right but for me I need the buffer of the D4.

@@TheProjectPhotography Definitely agree with it. I have a D800 for higher pixels. The AI-S 28mm 2.8 is the best wide angle lens I ever have. Less distortion, very close focusing distance, I can even use it as micro lens or portrait lens(quite interesting ) , extremely sharp from center to edge even wide open. Only problems is the manual control, and the aperture only can be set as 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11,16, 22 step by step, and the color is a little pale on my D800, but not a problem on my D3s. 12MP is plenty for many many situations, especially when they are the kind of high quality pixels found in the D3s. And if you need more, for an enlargement, for example? Well, Topaz Gigapixel AI will enable you to upscale your images up to 600% with pretty remarkable quality. Which breathes new life into cameras like the D3s.

Pretty much why I still use a D3s. Being able to use Topaz or even Photoshop with some work you can enlarge images with next to no artifacts and be well beyond 20x30 print sizes with a digital crop. The Z6, DF and D3s are Nikon top high iso performing cameras in that order. I'm looking to purchase the DF as my everyday camera and keep the D3s as my main shooter for event work. I'm not that big a guy and I still don't understand how many consider the D3 series heavy. Maybe with some big lenses idk.

Back in 2008 when I was shooting weddings and events, I was using a D300 with a D200 as backup. The D3 arrived then and I ordered it from Nikon directly. It was like hitting a home run for me. Later the D700 came on the market and I grabbed one. It had the same sensor and had a 95% viewfinder but made a great second body. Both are built like tanks! I experimented to see if the 3D focus tracking was as good as I had read and it was... and still is. Colors seemed to be even better than previous bodies. When I got into model portfolios, I found it to be amazing. Both bodies rest in my equipment closet since I retired in 2012. NASA, by the way also ordered a batch of the D3. Now as a geezer, I use lighter D750 and Z7 for some shooting but if I ever got back to needing the earlier bodies for something else, I would. I never got interested in the D3s and wonder what the improvements were. By the way, 12 megapixels means larger pixels and larger pixels means an ability for your sensor to gather more light. Which means that they are great in low light.

I agree with everything mentioned. I purchased a Nikon D3s on eBay in 2019 for $1,000 with 6K shutter clicks. The real take away from this is the VALUE of the camera. Some of the events I shoot are tennis and dance. Both require high shutter speed to stop the action, good low light sensitivity, high frame rate and big buffer. I was surprised how clean the pictures are at ISO 12,800. I can easily get 2,000 pictures on one battery. That's the VALUE for me. If you don't need value, buy the latest and greatest. I use other cameras for other types of events. When I'm shooting studio shots, I would nerver use this camera (I use a Canon 5DS).

Your D7100 has about the same picture quality but if you are a pro you can't go wrong with ta D3s. It has a great focus but it will be like carrying a rifle into the battle. Both camera's are great but remember that the d7100 has a 24.1 mp sensor and is lighter. But 12.3 mp is not terrible. as long as you are filling a wedding album full of full page beautiful pictures the sensor will not be a big deal but the 24.1 mp, d7100 will be better for birds and things that you will want to crop.

The focusing of the D3s is still great, just because newer cameras have better focusing systems doesn't mean the D3s doesn't have good autofocusing. With that being said for general purpose (and not sports photography) I'd choose the Z6 because it's easier to move around the focus points and the Z6 seems to be faster. The D3s doesn't have a joystick, which does suck, so it's a bit harder to move around the focusing points and that's mainly why I use 11 point selectable AF points. So pretty much the Z6 for everything else and D3s for sports. I hope that makes sense and if you have more questions feel free to let me know.

They just don't die, wheres SD cards do on a regular basis (I know from experience in my D800). There's two problems with the D3s. First: NPS dropped it. So you don't get the fast and cheap professional service any more, which really is a pity. Second: I am on my my third sleeving now. Nikon just doesn't get how to do this reliably. Apart from that: I open my beers with it. No kidding.

What are your thoughts on Z50? Are D3 and D4 a better option?

It really depends on what you're shooting, if you're more casual and want something small and compact the Z50 is a wonderful camera. If you're doing hardcore pro level work and you're on a budget the D3 is great, but if you can spend the bit extra to get a D4 I'd definitely recommend that. I'm not sure exactly what you need it for so I can't really say. If you let me know exactly what you intend to use it for feel free to let me know and I can give further clarification.

Got a question....anybody can answer this.....if there is a sale on a D3s that the owner is asking $650 estimate (he does not want to bargain or go lower).....the body is mint condition and its about 30k per his estimate of clicks......should I buy it??? I already have my boss's D500 and my D700 which I am pleased although the D700 has a hotshoe problem (flash syncing).

Honestly that's a good kit. The d700 and d3 have the same af system so performance wise you'd be cool
