48 years old. Also back on BMX after a 20+ year break. So cool to see so many guys our age getting back into riding. I primarily ride flat (S&M Intrikat) but I’m building a hybrid flat/street bike (WTP Utopia Hybrid) as well. Now my kids and even my wife want bikes! My only regret is waiting so long to get back on the bike.

Nice video. I hear you. I am also getting back into bmx after 30 years and also got the 2023 Kink Whip XL. I got no pegs but I changed the tires for some lighter Odyssey Super Circuit ones. Love it!

complete beginner here. bought the kink whip last year. best purchase ever. if you start experiencing squeaking overtime, try replacing the plastic cone spacer at the BB with a metal one, it fixed my issue.

49 year old here, just bought a Kink Whip myself. Bought a Jamis hybrid at first, figured it was a good start...big mistake it just fueled the feelings and memories of my old Dyno, GT and Robinson as a kid and my early 20s. Nothing in my adult life could evoke those feelings, funnily enough not even my Harley Dyna low, could. Sure I get sense of freedom on it....but its not quite the same. (Maybe it's a midlife crisis thing 😂idk) But damn i missed that feeling. My kids think I'm crazy, but my grandkids think I'm cool af, because now I can cruise the neighborhood with them.

I got the same bike (2022 model) for the same reasons. I’ve got a similar skill level too now, lost all the skills I had in my early 20’s now that I’m 40+. I was pretty impressed by the high tensile Kink frame I got for my kid years ago and when I decided I wanted to go from my 24” aluminum race bike back to a more durable 20” I was pleased to find they make a longer frame with double wall rims and chromoly everything for a decent price. A no-brainer. It’s a pretty nice bike and it’s holding up to my fat ass hopping curbs where my aluminum 24” bike would flex. Few pounds heavier but almost doesn’t seem like it, as it’s more compact. Good stuff dude.

Think I’m gonna go with the proton because I can get it cheaper without the breaks and get left hand drive side. But the kink is a beaut. Looking to buy this bike in 3 weeks. It's within my budget. Same as you, haven't ridden in a long time. Also want full crmo. If I want to upgrade parts later, it's a possibility. Love the orange, the ones we have in Australia are slate grey which looks alright. But I wish I could get the orange lol. I'm an older rider (40). I want to just stuff around, nothing serious, but learning to manual is a must for me.

I went with the same bike old guy getting back into it lol. what hub guards did you go with? I'm keeping this one as a cassette and now just ordered the Fiend type A+ bit better geometry little bit better quality and a freecoaster got it shipped to my door for under 585. You will want to replace the cranks on the whip xl they are crap just 8 spline can get the Rant 48 spline full chromo cranks for like 100 well worth it for the upgrade stronger and lighter and flat bottoms to not interfere w/grinds and such. I have also changed out to demolition momentum tires they are way lighter save like 2lbs and grip like no other on street or park. Say they are a 2.35 but are actually 2.41 best tires out imo and not expensive at all.

At your age it is extremely unlikely that you will ever advance to a level of which you truly needed full chromoly and double wall rims. Most people don't in general. Unless you are going off of high drops or stairs on a regular. It's more of a sells scam than anything. I started bmxing in elementary and I have never broke/bent a frame or rim. Even hitting dirt jumps, still never happened. But I also have never done anything really big. That's really the only way you will ever need to worry about it. Basic stuff that most people are doing, isn't going to bend or break a frame. I mean you still have brakes on and no gyro, so you aren't doing any bar spins. And if you aren't doing something that basic, you definitely won't be doing anything big enough to bend or break a frame. You could have been fine with a cheaper bike from kink. But you do you boo lol.
