Why I Chose Belize to Live, Invest and Develop on Ambergris Caye, Belize

I have built 2 beach homes in Belize over the last 12 years both on Placencia Peninsula. The info in this video is useful, however, I believe Ambergris Caye has its disadvantages since its an island and due to this limits the residents to very limited services, stores, opportunities, etc., that are on this small island including the limitation of getting to the mainland by boat or small airplane. Due to this, there are added costs to food, supplies, and especially building property. Placencia area which is connected to the mainland is where many big and new American and Canadian investors are spending their money on eco resorts, beach homes, marinas, and many different services. Consider this area if you are interested in Belize, especially if you plan to retire there.

That’s a bit of a complex question. It depends upon exactly what you are shipping, how much you’re shipping and with whom you are shipping. It helps if you have a smaller amount to share a container with other people. Belize is a great place to retire, especially Ambergris Caye as it has a large expat community and good medical care. There are two hospitals on the mainland and of course there is always a two hour flight to Miami, Houston, or Dallas if necessary. Medical tourism is also 1st rate and affordable in Merida. Moving to Belize can be an awesome life experience, however, you should make sure you are properly prepared for life here. Setting your expectations properly, and having enough money to live on are very important considerations. In order to work in the country you will need a work permit which can take time to acquire. Hi Omara, Depending upon which country you are coming from a visa may be necessary. If you are from the US or Canada, you simply get your passport stamped upon entry and renew every 30 days for a fee.

But do not tell people to come to Belize to invest to become rich , because of lower taxes , development , land grabs .etc. Tell people the truth 50 % of Belizians live below poverty line , minimum wage is a mere $2.50 Us an hour,, no benefit whatsoever, school is not free not even for primary grades. By all means tell people to consider Belize as a place to live but to act and behave morally . Do not suggest they flash their money with fancy cars, boats and clothing . Be modest share your money and skills liberally with the fantastic Belizian people and leave Belize no richer than when you arrived, money wise. Yes there is Medical care. Medicaid is an American Benefit, does not apply in Belize. You can purchase international insurance coverage and the prices of care here are a fraction of what we are used to in the states. You can order from Amazon, Ebay, etc. Getting it here takes some time and you will have to pay duty on your purchases. Finally, we have the GSU which are military trained personnel that deal specifically with any gang related activities. We also have the Coast Guard.
