These are good tips, always think about selling, in 2 years you’ll be wanting to sell as soon as there’s an inevitable upgrade available :). Also I think contents insurance is more worthwhile than AppleCare. I chose to get each base model of 14, 16 and 16 Max for best delivery time, and I’ll probably return one or two of them. If I had the time I would’ve bought the 14 with the Max chip as the 14 is a better form factor.

@@ImLeeLoi Yes, I’m really looking forward to getting it. The delivery will be between November 26th and December 4th. That’s a long wait. I’ll be eagerly watching all the reviews on my iPad during that time. I’ve already sold my MacBook Air on Yahoo Auction for ¥92,000 (US$807). Not bad considering that the Apple trade in was ¥55,000 (US$483). I’ve had the MacBook Air for a year, so it’s cost me around ¥5000 (US$44) a month. I usually change to the latest model every 2 to 3 years as I like the idea of leasing the latest technology which I always have covered with AppleCare. So your a graphics power user? I think if you are the GPU upgrade is worth it as I said but I’m never doing any graphic intensive tasks. Only photoshopping and Video which already has the decoder on the M1 Pro. My understanding was the 2nd Decoder allowed you to export two videos at once but if the 2nd decoder does double performance for H265 I will consider swapping!

@@ImLeeLoi more so for future proofing. I want to get more into davinci resolve and fusion. Or at least get better with Apple motion. But for stacking effects and color corrections. I have a maxed out 2012 rMBP and it’s lasted me 9 years. Of course no more OS updated so it had 8 years of support. If I could get 8 years and not have to upgrade again would be great. But we’ll see. I went with a similar configuration. I use mine for music and need to load many samples, so RAM size is important. I first ordered a 1TB version, but I’m already over the 0.5 TB of my current MacBook Pro, so I canceled it and went with 2TB. Don’t buy for what you need today. Buy for 4-5 years in the future.
@ImLeeLoi3 жыл бұрын
Did you go M1 Pro or M1 Max. I think emphasis is buying what YOU NEED.
@JonFairhurst3 жыл бұрын
@@ImLeeLoi - I got the lowest cost M1 Pro with 32 GB, 2 TB, and the larger charger. My main use is music, including non-live composition and live performance many sample libraries. I need good processing for real-time effects, but this does not often use multi-core. (I can add more instances of my VST/AU host to use more cores, but this increases complexity greatly. I want to use as few cores as possible.) I was hoping to get 64 GB before the announcement, but that would have cost another $900 ($500 for the Max + $400 for memory.) Graphics are not stressed at all for music production and performance. Single core performance and memory size are the big items. I might do some video editing in the future, but the projects aren’t likely to be huge and I won’t be on deadline. If I have to use proxies and my render time is twice as long as the Max, it’s not a pain point. I went for the 14-inch screen for portability, cost, size on stage, and I can use an external monitor at home. The stronger cooling of the 16-inch version would have been nice. Noise is an issue for music production. If the fans kick on later or spin more slowly in the bigger laptop, it could be good. In general, I want to not push the computer too hard, so is stays quiet. If I need more power, adding a future Mac Mini Pro could make more sense for my usage. Two quiet computers beats one loud one.
@JonFairhurst3 жыл бұрын
I think it’s what you *will* need over the next 3-5 years. I need 1 TB today. When performing live, it’s critical to have everything on the internal SSD. Some licenses require the content to be installed on the system drive. If the external drive is lost or damaged, it can kill the entire setup. While 1 TB is adequate today, I predict that I will exceed it within two years. Going for 2 TB is easy insurance. Sure, I could add a 1 TB SD card, but that costs $300, and it’s a headache to manage data. SD cards often fail. I first ordered a 1 TB MacBook Pro, but lost sleep with worry. The next day, I canceled the order, bought a 2 TB version, and I now sleep well. There’s a lesson. If you buy a version that makes you lose sleep, you probably bought the wrong version. 😴😴😴
@ImLeeLoi3 жыл бұрын
@@JonFairhurst Some great points. It really depends on what you're doing. In video for actual work (not my YT videos) we're backing up to three different places and typically the Internal drive is never used so I'm sleeping easy with 1TB. I think as you mentioned buy the config that makes you sleep easy at night, you don't want to have anxiety over if you got enough RAM - that said it's important people understand what these upgrades add to your Computer rather than blindly upselling. Fingers crossed the MacBook Pro 14 inch is all that you need, I do prefer keeping all my files in one system. I got good with a workflow of having two computers but really yeah, it's much easier just having the one.

@@ImLeeLoi - Yes, I was doing a video project recently where I used an external SSD as the fast-access, current project drive, and an external HD for backup and archive. This was in a home office. On the road, I might want a larger hard drive and an internal SD for short term back up. You could edit on a plane like that. Bring an external hard drive for longer term backup when you arrive at the hotel. The key is to understand your use case. Apple will make a lot of money selling M1 Max systems with 64 GB and 8 TB to people who just consume social media. 😉

I’m selling both machines either way. I don’t need the upgrade in graphics based on my time with the M1 Mac Mini and being happy with current GPU performance. Your ultimately spending €3K, if you need the upgrade get the upgrade but if there was no value in M1 Pro Apple wouldn’t have offered it to begin with. They don’t even have a 14 inch configuration with M1 Max you can buy off the shelve. CPU performance is the same and that’s what I use most out of a Computer as video editing uses the decoder chip!!

If that's what you want and you plan to keep it until it's last legs fall off that should be great. As long as your happy with 1TB of storage. I think if you have to ask, then it is perfect for your After Effects needs. You'd know if you needed more. If it's just to mess around in AE as a hobbyist or enthusiast, I wouldn't spend extra.

I went with almost the same configuration (but 16' instead of 14') and for similar reasons. I mostly need the fast computer power and not the extra GPU cores. Since CPU power is the same, except for the bandwidth, I saved money and went with the M1 Pro. I'm not sure yet how the unified memory performance compares to traditional RAM, but I did find myself already pushing the limits on my 16GB RAM machine so I also decided 32GB would probably be a worthwhile investment. Even though an extra $400 for an extra 16GB seems ridiculously expensive. Hope we both made a wise decision!

And even then bandwidth is about memory width more than distance so it's not like double the bandwidth means 2x faster ram it means 2x more data can be pushed but that's a lot of data to push so much so you're a 64GB ram user at that point.
