Two recommendations - you should highlight the machine you're testing somehow in the performance bar charts: use a different color for the text at least. I had a hard time finding it before the video moved on. And adding "(higher is better)" or "(lower is better)" would make the bar graphs clearer as well.

I’m not running out to get these. TBH the A12x in my iPad is no slouch and neither is the M1 in the 24” iMac I bought a few months ago. This stuff is going to trickle down anyway like it always does. I think the point of all this is to compete with the higher end intel stuff and make more conversions from windows users when they realize that these new Mac’s are some serious machines. For us non pro users though, none of this is necessary for Zoom meetings and opening up Numbers, Pages and Mail.

I had the 13 inch M1, 1TB storage and 16GB ram and I had so many issues with it. My display hinge was loose, and apple fixed it. Then, the backplate made clicking noises whenever Iifted the machine. Apple tried to fix it. Three repairs later it still had the same issue! After this, apple decided to replace my machine with a new 13inch. I asked them for the 14 inch because it was only a $100 more for the base model. They told me I didn't have to pay that $100, and I have the 14 inch and its AMAZING! The speakers blew my socks off. The display when watching movies at night doesn't have the grey bars. It's black. The promotion screen is amazing! The battery is a bit worse compared to my 13, but, If I turn pro-motion off, it gets better battery than the 13 inch. Overall, the 14 inch is a great machine!

The question you should ask is are you getting paid to work with Final Cut? If that is what you do for living then you should go for the top tier model MAX model and order as much storage as possible. There are some professional video creators who bought the MAX model and explain the benefits. Otherwise, save your money. In 3-4 years, we will have new CPUs/GPUs (M3 chip maybe) and Apple will be advertising that their laptops are so powerful that they can simulate the solar system.

Luke, what do you think about RAM options? Will the base model benefit from 32GB? The reason I asked is that I’m a casual user, so I will not realize the full power, but I like to keep my macs for at least 5 years, and I’d like to be a bit future-proof. Since ram is shared with gpu, will games play better with 32GB?

I would think this is hardly a gaming laptop. A lot of the power coming from the Computer is from dedicated Prores/h264 codec handling cores, and IIRC games tend to not take that much CPU bandwidth, generally. If you considered an apples to oranges comparison of a 3080 has 10GB of VRAM, which would mean you would have the same max “total ram” as a 6GB RAM board with a 3080 at full tilt. Of course, it’s much more complex than saying 10+6 =16. If you’re not a power user I highly suspect (with pretty much zero proof aside from anandTech’s results) that the base model is all you’ll need. If you really want to game on this then you should go for the M1 max, which is about 2x more GPU intensive and will come with a minimum of 32GB. In my personal opinion I would save the 600+ dollars and just buy a dedicated GPU for a desktop computer when you want to play games. TL;DR it’ll maybe be better for games, depending on what games you’re playing, but a wiser decision would be to go with 16GB, and save the money.
@IMAN7THRYLOS
@IMAN7THRYLOS 2 жыл бұрын
If you want gaming, buy a PC gaming laptop. We are a month away from Black Friday and you can expect to find some tempting deals from Dell. They are noisy and consume a lot more power but you will be able to play many more games. Nonetheless all laptops (PCs, MACs) are not good platforms for serious gaming because their form factor imposes limitations to their cooling and power consumption. The best option for you to play at the moment is a gaming console. If you can find a PS5/XBOX Series X, that would be the best choice. Alternatively, get a gaming PC.

When I was a kid I saved up and got the 13in mbp and loved it and still do over 10 years later… but I remember seeing the 17in and thinking how stunning it was and amazing it would be to own one… just today I went and saw the 14” and 16” in person and it really made me feel something similar it’s stunning in person Except now I have a job and can actually save and get the 16” so I might have to do that even though I had been planning on getting the 14”

FYI Andrei from Anandtech said that Geekbench doesn't run long enough to spin the GPU up to its max clock speed - seems to be some sort of boost delay. Automatic mode vs performance mode maybe?

Benchmark numbers are boring, my Intel 16-inch was a beast also in benchmarks but sucked a lot with a lot of beachballing using it. And saw numbers 53 times today

The air vents below the screen look like a throw back to the 2013 MacBooks. I have a aged but still working mid 2013 MacBook Air and the air vent grills look pretty similar.

I've got the same one today, just with 1TB SSD. For me, it is all about the screen. An M1 Air 16'' would have been perfectly fine, but as the lineup is right now, that MBP is the next best thing.

Loving the vids! Can't wait to see all the comparisons you do :) Btw I think it would be helpful if you bolded the machine you're comparing in your graphs (ie M1 Pro 16" here). Since the order isn't always the same, it can take a bit longer than I'd like to find which bar on the graphs you're talking about, which distracts from your commentary.

Really impressive ! Quite curious about how it will perform in gaming, which never was a strong point on MacBooks. After years on my 2015 MacBook Pro, it’s quite tempting, with all the ports and this level of performance.

Thanks for the benchmarks. Would love to see less confusing naming of Macs. M1 MacBook Pro sounds very similar to M1 Pro. Also you sometimes include the screen size and year and sometimes not, and not always in the same spot. How about (M1 8GPU 2020, M1Pro 16GPU 2021 etc.)

Once you have the benchmarks please compare your fully spec'd out M1 Max to what a PC equivalent would be (Desktop or Laptop). Would be interesting to know what specs (and the cost) on the PC side you'd need to match the performance of the M1 Max.

When I ordered mine, the delivery date was estimated November 5-10. It stayed a week in order processing. This Sunday, it changed to preparing to ship. The date changed to November 2. Today I checked the tracking and its on the Delivery Vehicle. So excited I get it way earlier than my estimated delivery date.

@@alexandereismar Just the base model. I still do the majority of my work on my desktop PC but wanted a good laptop after several years with a few Dell XPS 13 and 15 machines. This MBP. 14 blows away the Dell laptops in build quality. It's a much bigger form factor, especially compared to the XPS 13. I planned on getting the M2 Air next year, but wanted to try the new MBP first. I'm going to play with it all weekend and see if it's a keeper. If I can confirm that the M2 Air will have XDR, I expect I'll return this MBP.

I'm so curious to compare the base 14" vs M1 air. Thermals (it can get hot in AUS) 4K video editing, battery life. I don't know which to get! I'm using a Windows Desktop, but I'm excited to get back to a portable Mac workflow. My last MBP 2013 died a few years back.

I'm watching on my 16' 1TB MBP! It's like watching on a wide screen TV in comparison to the old design. Also it ran my Sims 4- the way my older 2013 MBP runs Roller Coaster Tycoon Classic. All the loading screens are lasting 20 seconds at most?
