Hey Connor, I've been reliving my own unfulfilled life vicariously through your and Silas' videos, what I would have done back in the 70's when I was in my 20's and wanted to go live in Germany because I'd already taken German for 8 years by that time and spoke it pretty well. I ended up working a summer in Rottweil but my parents convinced me to go to med school because I had good grades, so poof! my dream vanished. Now as a retired doc at 70 I return every year for 4-8 weeks, drive around with friends, stay at Airbnb's, and visit my European relatives. I even took an advanced German course to update my 50 year old vocabulary along side of Arab, Chinese, Albanian, and Romanian immigrants who need to pass the TestDaF language qualification to get into the free universities in Germany. Even at the top level class many of them were still struggling with der, die, das, den, dem, und des, so don't feel bad. German is one of the hardest western European languages for English speakers. Only Finnish, Hungarian, and all the Baltic and Slavic languages are many times worse. Let me suggest a couple of things: [1] Get some formal tutoring or classwork to nail down the basic grammar rules early on so you don't make the mistake of learning constructions all wrong and keep repeating them because your followers find it cute or entertaining. For example, "alles die Leute" doesn't mean "all the people," alles = "everything" and all or alle mean "all." So alle Leute, all die Leute mean "all people and all the people." If you're saying everybody or everyone, it's just "alle." If you're sending a greeting "to everyone," Germans just say "allen" or "euch allen," not said the same as the guy's name either. That's a "dative plural" and so, ugh! you do need to learn some grammar! The meaning can be changed by using the wrong case or word gender or ignoring how the umlaut changes the pronunciation like in Eierlikör, saying "Eierlecker" unknowingly changed that eggnog to "ball/nut licker," but it did bring on a response in the comments! Remember our language 1000 years ago used to have this same hard grammar but after the Vikings (793) and then the French (1066) invaded England, two other languages came to influence Old Anglo-Saxon and to make it easier to understand each other, all the hard grammatical endings were dropped. So English is easier to learn by listening and repeating. Our extensive vocabulary from three original languages and our non-standard pronunciation not based on spelling are what make English difficult for foreigners since we haven't changed spelling very much since Chaucer's time. For nearly every silent "gh" in English you'll find a corresponding uttered "ch" in modern German. German has a table of 16 endings for 3 genders plus plural across the top and 4 cases down the side for all "the" words, another for all "a/an" words, and two more for weak and strong adjective endings. All of that went away in English but it's alive and well on a daily basis in German! Nail them down early on and you'll gain rapid confidence in your German. [2] Don't aim for a German passport but go for residency and if you stay for longer, then permanent residency. Germany would make you renounce your American citizenship for that passport and that's not a decision to be made on a whim unless you come from a country you'd never want to ever go back to again. You can get dual citizenship from Belgium after 5 years and there is a German speaking community just across the border there near Aachen. It's an area of Germany that was taken away from them as a punishment for WWI in the Treaty of Versailles, but the populace still speaks German. I enjoy visiting that area as it's beautiful. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to impart this info to you after watching this current video. Keep up the fun times!

Hi Conner, congrats on finding Germany so interesting and exciting. In 1984 I moved to Germany to improve my language skill and stayed for 10 years, but did not start a family there. Although I spoke German reasonably well before I arrived, I signed up for a language course at the "Goethe Institut" in München and earned the "Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom" in a few weeks. There is also a more extensive course that takes longer. During my sojourn in Germany, I lived in München for four years before moving to Ulm, halfway between München and Stuttgart, where I worked full-time as a computer programmer. I would have stayed longer if my step-father hadn't passed away, leaving my elderly mother alone. Since my time there was mostly before the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification, I traveled primarily around western Europe, UK, Scandinavia, Balkans, Turkey, and Morocco, plus a motor home trip with a friend through Poland and Czechoslovakia when the DDR still existed. I wish you many good experiences there too and look forward to seeing your future videos.

Welcome Connor! Great to see you back in this wonderful country, would love the opportunity to meet yourself, I moved to Germany almost 4 years ago from the UK, I have a German girlfriend and a 6month old boy, I live in Schaumburg. Your comments about speaking perfect German within a year made me laugh, its going to take a bit longer than that I think 😁 Like I said before I'd love to meet you day, all the best. I'm only 3 minutes in to your video but I totally get where you're coming from. I'm american and I've only ever lived in one city my entire life. I got so bored with the same day to day stuff and decided to spread my wings. I came to Germany last year to visit a girl I met online, and now one year later I am living here. I've only been here for 2 months, but it's been so great. I'm attending a language school and experiencing new things every day. Really a dream come true.

Conner is baaaaack!!!! So glad to see and hear from you! It makes me happy to see how much you have matured and what an inspiring attitude to life you have. I'm very impressed what your plans are and i'm very happy that you chose germany as your second home. I'm from Friedrichshafen at the Lake of Conctance (about 2 hours from Stuttgart) and i would loooove to meet you, showing you a bit of my homeland, have deep conversations about life and faith, have good food and just a great time. So let me know if you are into it!!! Lot's of loooove! 🙏🏼❤
