I've lived in Argentina and in Europe, and often I read that Argentina is a bit of Europe in South America, but immediately I think it's great that it's only 'a bit of Europe,' because it's that blend that makes Argentina special. In Argentina, there's still empathy, you still see children and lots of young people, pets are important but... less important than children, people still ask you 'How are you?'. That's the beauty of Argentina. If you're just after architecture, go to Europe. This is something else, a mix that's hard to find elsewhere.

@@Huguillon Every country in the world has people who live outside the capital city or main state/province and harbor a bias against those who live there. This bias is generally unjustified and irrational. Capital cities tend to be "nicer" for very objective reasons: more people live there, more resources are allocated there, which results in greater cultural influence and options. Harboring a bias against people living in the capital does not make you smart or special; on the contrary, it just makes you a bitter person looking for conflict where there isn't any.

Oh boy, do I relate. I arrived in BA in 1982 to teach English on a 6-month contract, and I stayed for 32 years! Every six months I'd start planning my return to the US, but there was always something holding me back, nothing I could put my finger on, some kind of magic. I didn't like the summers, but as soon as the weather got cool, I just had to stay for another fall and winter. And the men... I had three long-term (and I mean LONG term) relationships. Real men, not afraid of commitment or expressing their emotions. Such a rare gene pool and heritage mix. There was always something going on in the city. Opera, concerts, parties, cruising, art, new friends. I don't live there anymore, but I'll always cherish the memories.

You now Travis we porteños use a word to describe our relationship with BA, "nostalgia". Though every porteño will describe it differently, to me, nostalgia is a mix of sweet old memories that are gone with your confidence about good things to come, despite the difficulties of life. I think BA, maybe like no other city in the world, makes that feeling possible. I think you do not need to be born in BA to be a legit porteño, but you need to understand nostalgia. If any day of your life, you find your self leaving BA, and while you are on the cab to the airport, you start to feel a tiny sensation in your belly growing up to the heart, and that feeling tells you that maybe you don't want to leave, maybe you stayed enough in BA to feel nostalgia.

My favorite scene is to sit on 9 de julio and watch the lights come on at night, or early in the morning and watch the sun come up. Seeing the sun come up on the Rio de la Plata on the Vicente Lopez beach area is another spectacular view. Finally, other interesting things to do are to take tours of old buildings, take in all the beautiful sculptors and have a coffee every afternoon in a different neighborhood. I think most porteños will tell you they have a love-hate relationship with Buenos Aires, but every time I'm hanging out at a bar, a park or a cafe I remember why I love it. Our economic situation clearly makes things difficult, and our country is far from perfect, but it makes me sad that a lot of people from here thinks we suck because of it. I wish they knew that not everywhere in the world you can meet a stranger, tell them you're from another country, and they will welcome you with arms wide open. That not everywhere in the world you can make friends overnight without fear of judgement. Bad leaders do not equate to bad people. 👏🏽 I may have to add this to my list for the end of 2024 to early 2025. I'm still doing Europe but adding more. Curtains parts of this video reminded me of when I lived in Mexico City, yet some areas looked much newer and more progressive. As for those double decker busses that is what my everyday travel bus is like here in Scotland. It's lovely to ride along the coast on the bus or on the trains and watch nature. Train travel around other parts of Europe is so lovely and dog friendly. Safe travels Travis. 🙏🏼

Right, so if you're staying I might recommend a couple of tours. Go to Retiro train station and take the Mitre line, make a stop in Vicente Lopez and take a walk around, then stop in Olivos, same thing. Finally go to the end of the line to Tigre and take a boat tour and walk around. Maybe one day is not enough for all that, but you should check it. And since you're here you can't leave without visiting the cities of Mar del Plata, Pinamar, Cordoba, Salta and Mendoza. In that order, maybe Mendoza before Salta. Completely different vibes but as charming as B.A. Cheers

@@TravelWTravis "Thank you so much for all the recs!" - my real recs to you : i. your backpack over left shoulder only and under your left elbow, you won't look so tourist. ii. if you have a seat at a street table don't put your backpack over the seat besides you, hang it over your knee between your legs, much safer, no one will grab it and run. food places: Pizza: La mezzeta (fuggazzeta slice), Las Cuartetas, Guerrin (both the regular muzzarela) and maybe el cuartito. asado is always better with friends and family, home made empanadas in buenos aires are mid compared to empanadas saltenias or tucumanas (two other provinces), but two good places in capital federal are Fortín Salteño and Cumen Cumen

Buenos Aires is the most beautiful city I ever been. I lived here my entire life and never want it to leave. You’re more than welcome to come back. I encorage you to lear more about the dictatorship. I liked that the guided said Puerto Madero is one of the whealtiest neigborhood cause sometimes tourist only see that part and think we all live like that and that’s not it. I would recommend you to go to Agronomía, it’s a huge park open and it has a part of de Buenos Aires University (free education!) It’s lovely and the second saturday of everymonth has ferias. (It’s not in the center and it’s not turistic but I recomend it as someone who knows BS AS by living in it) I’d love to see another video of this city, greetings!

Hi Travis...glad you liked our city. Only one correction : the zoo was closed many years ago and has turned into an Eco Park. The animals that still live there are waiting to be relocated, as the case of Sandra , the orangutan who was declared as a"non human person" and sent to an animal Center in Florida, the lions and white tigers went to Minnesota, and the Grizzlies to Colorado...Have a great time...!!!
