I aspired to own a Rolex since I was very young and finally bought a brand new Explorer 2 in 2017. I wore it every day for two years until I was in a pub/restaurant and was obviously being watched by someone who kept looking at my watch after he made a phone call and another dodgy bloke joined him, we made a strategic exit with some other customers. That watch has now been sold, and I wear a smart watch. It's such a shame as I loved it, but it was definitely not worth getting stabbed for, and I won't ever buy another Rolex.

This to me has always been the ultimate Rolex. When they re-released it in about 2018, I went to an AD to put my name down on the list. He virtually laughed at me. If Rolex won't take the £9K for a virtually all steel watch, but want me to pay more than double on the grey market so that their perception is kept high, then sod them. I think the brand has gone from being an aspirational brand for hard working watch fans, to a vulgar brand for the nouveau riche.

I had a 18k white gold Rollie day/date with factory diamond bezel when I was living in Southern Spain a few Years ago..never had a issue out there.. I did get mugged for My chain once out there though lol.. personally.. I wouldn't get another like that now I'm back here in Birmingham UK, they'd have to chop me up to get it.. but.. I'm getting too old for all that Malarkey now.. no more gold watches. unfortunately :( it ended up getting robbed in a burgulary anyways.. lost ALL My watches, had to start from the very beginning again...nightmare.

Such an iconic watch, and a massive shame about watch crime being a reason why people cannot enjoy wearing a watch they worked so hard to get. That GMT function is so cool and the fact you can even have 3 time zones by using the bezel. The cyclops, even if it does suggest wonky eyes, has almost become iconic in itself though!

Regarding the cyclops, I was once against them, then I hit my mid 40s and they suddenly made sense, I literally cannot see the date without one now🤓

Feel the same. My '96 tritium dial GMT II is mint & gorgeous yet my friendly local indy dealer is collecting it tomorrow to sell on commission. It's one thing to be wary when worn & quite another to be burgled, which is what happened last month. Makes me nervous, even now, thinking how close I was to losing it...along with my Explorer 36 & the wife's 70's OP Date. They turned the place over but didn't find them...made off with the mrs' jewellery tho + many cheap nice watches...Timex, Tag, Casio, Vostok.

What a great review! Can I say that between the "Super!", the "Click it" and "What the wife said", I do believe yours is by far my favourite watch channel. I lusted after the Pepsi for years before finally pulling the trigger in February. I freaking love it. I wear it as much as I can and still find myself gazing at it just for the shear watch porn of it. I'm lucky to be in a job and a situation where I don't have to worry about theft, but it's a very real concern for most. I find it aggravating that people can't feel safe to wear a prized possession nowadays.

Love the Rolex GMT master 2 but the only Rolex I’d ever own now is the explorer 2. It’s understated enough that it’s less of a risk then and iconic watch like the master 2, Daytona and subby Gorgeous watch and great review as always by the way!!

All of your points are spot on. I don't own a GMT, but would like to add one to the collection. Despite this being a cornerstone of the Rolex catalog, I would also never get one for all the reasons you mentioned. And don't get me started on polished center links. Although, like many Rolexs, it is a beauty.

Great review (again), Russ. Giving the crowned devil its due, the GMT has long been my fave Rolex by the proverbial country mile, but can't and won't ever own one for all the reasons mentioned. And also why I'm glad Seiko released their 5 GMT last year, which I'm *absolutely* getting. (Surprised your wife *mostly* liked the "colorful" look of the Rolex, after brutally panning your Seiko PADI mini-Turtle in your Seiko collection round-up last year, still possibly my fave video, and the one that introduced me to you and your channel.)

Prefer the affordable reviews rather than the unobtainable luxury watches, but I think there’s loads of great brands out there in that higher end bracket like Tudor, Tag, Longines, Oris, that have some great looking watches - that blue dial Tag chronograph looks the biz!, and the cherry Aquis is definitely on my list.

It is the Rolex that first springs to mind for most people, you're right... Well that or a yellow gold DayDate haha. For GMT it's difficult to argue with the value proposition of a Tudor BB Pro.

Great review of this beautiful watch. I will never have the money to spend on a watch like that, but I did just purchase the Tandorio “Batman” GMT, with the Seiko NH34 movement and I put a fully brushed stainless steel bracelet on it, because I’m not a fan of those center polished links. So I get the looks of the GMT, the use of the GMT movement, and at a cost of just over $100. It scratches the itch for me at least. Plus, I don’t have to worry if something happens to it. I’ll simply replace it.

Another way to set a GMT Master is to set the 24 hour hand to GMT or Zulu time and the hands to your local time. That way you can quickly check the time in any time zone with the bezel based on Zulu time.

That's how I set them too. In the 90s and early 2000s when I was dealing with military flight schedules I'd put Zulu on the hands and use the GMT for local time.

My friend and his wife got mugged while jogging in London on a Sunday morning. A man in a suit grab my friend’s wife and put a knife under a throat forcing them to hand over their Rolex watches. Yes, we live in a mad world, but luckily I personally live in Switzerland where this problem is not so common (yet), but I do wear less flashy watches when I travel to foreign countries. I usually wear my Panerai Luminor Marina or my IWC Aquatimer that attract less attention. My home town is a famous ski and golf resort where high end watches are all over and makes the enjoyment of wearing them not so problematic, but I can easily understand the problem with the big cities. However, don’t give up your dream for that reason. I believe that everyone can find opportunities to wear safely his GMT or Daytona a few times per year. I keep my watches in a safe even though my house was never robbed and enjoy getting them out, once in while, just to admire them in my house.

My Casio AE 3000W will track 3 time zones wich is less hassle setting up it also is more accurate but the big bonus is you can time how long it tuck to fly to the place 😅

Love the Magical Macro Montage 🤩 I absolutely love this watch and Rolex designs in general but unfortunately for me they’re so far out of my price range they might as well be a mystical creature because I’m never going to see one 😂 Additionally, as you touched on yourself, barring a major change in my personal finances I would also be worried about walking around with 20 grand on my wrist 😧 Not just because I would be worried about someone snatching it off my wrist but also if I dinged it and damaged it! I think the ultimate “anti-flex” with one of these would be to pop off the bezel and stick it on a cheap tropic rubber strap like Marlon Brando did with his personal GMT Master he wore in Apocalypse Now. Absolutely nobody would recognise it and even if they did it’s probably massively devalued 😂

It’s a completely different construction to the ratcheting. It’s more a push than a click. Very similar to my Sinn 104

I agree completely with the reason(s) to not wear it. I have I vintage Submariner and a Patek Calatrava that both belonged to my dad. To me they are worth far more than secondary market prices and the fear of someone seeing them and something happening is enough to keep them in the watch box unless I know im going somewhere totally safe. Honestly, most of the time, even now, I am wearing my all metal G-shock.

You hit a nail on the pinion there, bud. I'd love a Rolex 'Starbucks' Submariner, but I just know I'd be very wary about wearing one in public and would also worry about it being scratched or knocked. I wear a G-Shock daily and it does everything I want from a watch, so buying a Rolex would only be seen as an investment. Like you I wear the watches that I purchase but I have to agree that some models you probably should be careful about wearing in certain scenarios. It isn't worth the risk of getting harmed for the sake of a watch. I love my F-91W and really don't want to loose it so I try to hide it under a cuff or if I was fit (I'm not) under a wrist sweat band.

I just got an Explorer II (226570 black dial) for my big milestone birthday (about 4 months late, but it's not like I could time when I get it). It's not quite as under the radar as the Explorer I, but I do think it's less flashy than the GMT Master II. I'm on the wait list for a "Batman" GMT Master II as well, but was relieved when they got me the Explorer II first. Without the multi-colored spot it from a distance bezel and polished bracelet, it doesn't stand out quite so much. I did see a luxury watch retailer mention not seeing as many luxury watches when out and about in New York/California, where there's a bit an uptick in watch theft. They said it's also showing in retail sales as well, but U.S. states such as Texas and Florida (no rash of thefts there as far as I know) are seeing growth and are currently the biggest markets. It truly is a shame.

Oh, that GMT 2 is a beauty!! But I couldn't agree with you more. It's a watch that potentially draws a lot of unwanted attention. And I am in the category (perhaps most) of watch enthusiasts that want a watch to actually wear and enjoy for myself. Non-watch enthusiasts don't know much about other watch brands, "but" they do know (and often recognize) Rolex. And that can create many problems in today's world (i.e. muggings, etc.) It's wasn't always this way for Rolex. But the baggage now days.....:-( And that's why I am rooting for their little brother, Tudor!

Someone I know had the blue/black variant of these and sold it recently. He thinks he was followed for it a couple of times, and someone has tried to lift it off him in a restaurant or bar some place at least once. He lives in a shit city with loads of casual violent crime (London), so has got rid in order to reduce the odds of leaving his wife widowed.

That's the trick isn't it with some of these really high end watches. Most the target watches I want that I'm working towards luckily are relatively subtle or are brands that don't invite the kind of attention a Rolex does... or at least I don't hear many people getting mugged for a Nivada Gretchen chronograph or a Ball Trainmaster Cannonball or vintage Bulova Accutron Railroad piece... But with something like Rolex outside of certain models, I can't see myself wearing them unless I'm at a special event. Gotta admit, it does look really damn nice though. That said, I'm good on watches with time zone tracking between Casio Royale (my first and favorite) and my latest Timex 3 Time Zone chronograph (which for me hits that nice spot between utility and flash).

This watch was my grail forever. Now I could finally have one, if I stretched for it some, don't even want it. Heavy, futzing with service, worrying about scratches... nah. Frogman is as high as I go and I'm happy. I live in California and I know more than one person in LA who owns a Rollie and is afraid to wear it outside. Having had a job flying around the world maintaining aircraft where all the paperwork is done in GMT regardless of where you are. I’d have found one very useful.

A Very beautiful & iconic watch, but dangerous to wear. If I ever in my life own a Rolex, I will play it safe & not wearing it outside. I rather wear the AE-1200h & DW-291. Besides, Both are World Time watches. Really nice Review Russel. Regards

I bought a new GMT-2 in 2001 and used it as my everyday watch for more than 10yrs, I knocked the hell out of it, it did have issues stopping on the odd occasion, probably due to not having it serviced. I’d wanted one ever since I was a kid, but the thing that I didn’t like was that the anodised aluminium bezel faded. I sold it and now wear an Omega 300 Master Chronometer with the ceramic bezel insert and crystal case back, for me personally a step up, each to their own.

Love this watch but similar to your comments I doubt I’ll ever own one even if I had the dosh. Didn’t realise it was only 100m either, that is poor!!! Think I’d prefer the Tudor version. 👍

This is why own G-Shock MTG B1000, B2000, & B3000. I can wear extremely capable watches with dual times without worries.

Not all people can buy a Rolex and not all people who have the money would even want to buy one. There are now many other choices and some of them are minimalist like the ones that come from the Bauhaus designs. I just had my very first mechanical watch that I worked for and it is less than a 150 dollars and it is a Seiko 5 with a 7S26 caliber. Whenever I'm out in public wearing it, there are people who make pull certain jokes like "oh nice, a Rolex" I just smile and move on about my day. Well done with your points.

I really love the root beer, but also know I wouldn’t wear it due to being too flashy. Even outside of the mugging worry, I don’t like to be ostentatious, especially when it comes to expensive items

When some Casio watches cost £5K it really isn’t about any particular brand being a mugging magnet. You just have to wear a watch that is appropriate to whatever area or event you are attending.

Got the Tudor Pepsi GMT as can't afford the Rolex and very pleased. I wear the Tudor without any worries.
