Ensenada, Baja California is one city in Mexico that I´d love to live in if I had a budget of $1,000 USD per month.
Clip from this Tangerine Travels video: • BEST MEXICO CITIES to ...
The city has a population of about 500,000 people so it has all the conveniences of a big city. It´s also one of the only coastal cities in Mexico with nice weather year round.
In addition to that, Ensenada is located just a couple of hours from California, so if I were to need to go back to the US for any reason, I could easily do so.

There is awesome hiking, camping, surfing, fishing, whale watching, beautiful wine country, craft beer, amazing food, rugged beaches and even oak and pine forests that surround Ensenada. In general it is very americanized and it does not have the same colonial feel as other places in Mexico and feels very much like an extension of California, and due to the proximity to the US, prices are hyper inflated. Summers are warm but mild with almost no rain, and winters are a bit longer and cool with rain November through March. Fresh produce and especially seafood is abundant here and the people are generally friendly! The weather is nice most of the year, but when it gets cold, windy or rains, it can feel very cold, and I have never seen a house here with proper heat or insulation, so it can feel or be colder inside than it is outside, but it makes for nice cool summers inside without the need for AC. Many roads are in bad shape or simply unpaved / dirt, and even many of the well-paved roads tend to flood with heavy rains. The water quality can also be so bad that water from the tap smells like sewage, so it's best to boil tap water for washing dishes and using drinkable water for brushing your teeth and cooking. We lose 30% of our water due to infrastructure issues. Every construction or renovation project I've seen here takes forever, looks uglier and turns out worse in quality than it was before, or still ends up with problems and issues. Visiting Ensenada is one thing but living here is a different story! I've been living here for 3 years and I'm still here, so I guess it's a love hate thing at this point :)

If you didn't live there where else would you move? We're looking for another beach town/city with lots of culture and weather warmer than Ensenada (but not as warm as Puerto Vallarta/Mazatlan). Does such a place exist?

@@AlanRomero745 Not really sure if another such place exists weather wise, it’s kind of a one or a kind weather area in Mexico. Basically San Diego weather. La Paz could be an option - warmer all year but it’s even more of a desert climate and it gets extremely hot in the summer, although the temp does dip down significantly at night. Once you get over to the mainland like Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta it gets tropical. Just need to weigh your options I guess on what you really want! Not really sure where else I would live, personally I like the heat and wouldn’t mind living in a place with warmer ocean temps all year but it’s not an easy decision to make.

The water smelling like sewage! Is that everywhere or is there something we can do to never have this at home?

Great summary of Ensenada. Yes, the geography in and around Ensenada is beautiful. Better than San Diego in my opinion. However, the city itself is an overcrowded dump. And prices are hyperinflated. Every time I visit it continues to shock me at how expensive it is to eat out. You'll pay around 75% of the bill you would pay in San Diego for comparable food, but considering the workers get paid like $2 and hour in Ensenada, compared to $15-20 an hour in San Diego, doesn't add up. Not sure how the locals afford to live in Ensenada. For me a nice place to visit for a couple of days but couldn't imagine living there.

Can't hardly live in Ensenada for 1k. The first houses you showed were geared towards foreigners. Maybe as a solo person renting a room, but not renting a decent house in Ensenada.

I actually moved into the first house 3 months ago. It is not this one exactly, I am a bit higher in the hill with even nicer view. But the same looing house in the same residential. I pay $1.300 a month but it's furnished.

I live in a Mexican neighborhood and i have a 3 bedroom 1 bath for 400 usd per month. Things have gone sky high since covid. Just outside of Ensenada going south. Now if i lived in gringo landia on the beach i would be paying 1k or more but right on the beach. I have been here since 2011. When i 1st came down i bought a 1 bedroom house trailer for a littleover 5k, and my land lease was under 1k a year

@@tinamcclure7984 at the very minimum, ANYONE in the US (Especially in states like Arizona) can have easy access to a gun to defend themselves with IF there is a shooting (I've never experienced one in 15 years here) as opposed to not being allowed to have a gun in Mexico and then being executed like FISH IN A BARREL by the cartel or some demented criminals. No thanks. I love mexicans and I was going to have a vacation there next month but after reading up on the insane crime, HELL NO!

I much prefer tours of real properties to get a better feel for what you get for the money. Your video leaves me thinking you've never been to Ensenada nor do you really know what people should be paying for rent (or buying a home).

Let's face it: Ensenada is not Mexico's most beautiful city. It's a major port, a working-class town. Other than the obligatory cruise ship stop, definitely not a major tourist destination. This is the real Mexico, and if you just want to hunker down and lay low, or assimilate into the culture and learn to live within the relaxed tempo of life south of the border, well, you need go no further than Ensenada, where it still is the Wild Wild West, and I wouldn't change a thing.
