In this video I will discuss Why I decided to switch to Macro Social Work. I started my Social Work career working directly with clients on a Micro level. After 2yrs of working on the Micro level I decided that I no long wanted to create change by working with clients but instead work in the background of social work. I am so excited for this career change, i hope you all enjoy this video.

I just started my MSW and the amount of reading and theories makes me wanted to quit but it’s something that I want to do and I’m not a quitter so I’m not quitting. Do not give up! My program was very overwhelming in the beginning but I make it to the finish line and so can you. Being a MALE in a predominantly female industry will allow for many opportunities. Also black men are starting to take care of their mental health now more than ever, so we need more black men in mental health to help our black men as well. 🙌🏾

Man, you are literally voicing everything I am currently feeling in my last semester of my MSW program… I graduate in May. I focused on school social work and I’m realizing that it’s not necessary what I want long term. I have ALWAYS been interested in macro. I felt the most inspired when I was taking those courses. I love how well you balanced what's best for you while also considering what was best for the clients you'd be seeing! I totally agree that social workers are social workers no matter what their job title is. I just started my MSW this week and while right now, I'd like to focus more micro than macro, I definitely think this same change could be in my future after a while! Loved this video :)

I can tell that making that change was really hard for you, I am glad that you are following your heart. Believe it or not, self-actualization is a very important aspect of social work. I am getting into substance abuse, because I do not want to work with kids, nor do I want to work with people who's predominantly mentally unwell, because of a mental illness. Let me take care of the substance abuse and you take care of the mental part. Please and thank you.

Sounds good to me. I don’t know what areas I would like to work in. I’m all over the place. I want to keep my full time and possibly due some contract work on the side. I’m learning we can be multi faucet and not one dimensional without stressing out.

I thought I wanted to do micro level social work, but as I am considering work/life balance, stress levels, compassion fatigue, etc. I am thinking it might be better for me to do macro level social work. Do you have any suggestions for getting experience in macro level social work, even if it's volunteer/unpaid? Thanks. I appreciate your content.

If you are in a social work program I would definitely suggest that you intern and/or volunteer on the macro level to gain experience. Best way to build your resume.

When I tell people I want to be a social worker they tell me that even though you have the education it’s hard to get a job without experience. So what would you say about getting experience for this job straight out of school?

You will get some experience in your social work program. All social work programs requires you to have a internship.

Hey Kimmy, would you say macro social work jobs are more lucrative than micro. I’m not sure how this would work in the state of MS. We can’t identify as a social worker unless we are licensed.

For sure! You also don’t have to be licensed to work on a macro level

Good informative video! Thank You for your honesty. I have a lot of questions???? I live in the state of MD and we are not allowed to identify or practice Social Work unless we have a license but I hear you and others say that you see clients and I want to know how🤔 The other question I want to know is what types of work in MACRO level practice can a person do without a license..... 😀You are doing big things without a licenses.. Happy for you... please share the scoop because a lot of people has failed the license but they practicing🤷🏿‍♀️

There’s a number of different positions that don’t require an license. For instance you can do PRP, case management etc. Those are social worker jobs but do not require you to have a license…. They are also lower level and don’t pay as much. I have a playlist on different social work careers that can help you.

So you’ re saying a person with a social work degree with no license can work in the field and still help and make a difference but without the title of a “ social worker”. Good way of looking at it... thanks for the feed back.. this is encouraging to those of us who are still in school or who hasn’t passed the licensure but still need/want to work in the field.
