The fact that you lose BOTH audio inputs when you remove the top handle and they didn't even put a 3.5mm jack on the body is what kills the usability of this camera for me. At least with the FS5, one of the xlr's was on the body. Such a stupid decision by Sony.

The dynamic range depends if you have the "Noise Reduction" on or off. With noise reduction on the DR is at the level of the C70. With the noise reduction off the DR is about 1 Stop worse than the C70.

As someone who shot on Canon for a decade and owned the c300m3, c500m2 more recently I totally understand where you’re coming from. I actually bought and sold the fx6 3 times before I committed to it. Honestly, you need the camera for a month before you can really decide if it’s going to replace a system you’ve used for a decade. There’s a lot of little intricacies you take for granted but don’t realize until you try a new system. Change is hard. I had the same issue when I moved to a RED Gemini. Eventually after 3 months I was very comfortable but there’s no way I could have known after a couple weeks. The workflow is just very different.

I've been in the canon camp for a while and always end up being tempted to cross over to Sony land.. Price per feature Sony wins hands down. For me workflow wise one Canon is just what I'm used to and feels more organic to use. It's more or less a subjective reason why I would choose canon over Sony and at the end of the day. I like the Canon image so that keeps me fairly rooted.

Thanks for taking the time to do this comparison. Sounds like you have some pretty key things that prevent you from switching. I am currently a FX6 owner, but by no means do I latch on to brands (currently have Sony, Canon and Fujifilm in the cabinet depending on the job). Couple of things that stood out for me: 1. When you show the DR test you compare the much more expensive C300mkii vs FX6 instead of the C70 which is in the same price point and target audience for entry level cinema camera buyers. Do you know if the C70 with its DGO sensor and FX6 DR test are more comparable? 2. Another thing was if you tried using Phantom LUTS or Alister Chapman's LUTS? Those were the ones that convinced me right away that S-LOG3 was something that I could enjoy using, as opposed to anything pre A7sIII/A1/FX6/FX3 - those were impossible for me to work with.

The lab test was C300III but the C70 has the exact same DR. My tests were strictly C70 vs FX6 and this also confirmed it. I did try the phantom luts. Also good, I still wasn’t convinced. Personal choice for sure. The 1 stop DR was def the biggest factor by far though

The c300 III and the C70 have the same sensor. The only difference is the raw that you get on the c300.

I switched to canon exclusively for rf lenses. I have r5 c70 and komodo. R 5 image is okay but thr c70 is beautiful, great colors and very nice highlight roll off. I felt sony always was very muddy. Yes at then end you can fix all that but it just takes more time

The cameras are same in level of quality. I'm saying that it just comes out more balanced on the canon. You have to work a bit harder for better colors on sony. But at the end they give same results. Canon is just a bit more organic to start off.

The auto focus is kinda weird on c70 it is more manual to use when in auto focus. The sony auto focus is much better to use than c 70. For me leaving it in center works just fine. Face priority only looks for face and sometimes it's hunting too much. It also comes down to efficiency and what more important to you. But autofucs isn't bad it's just takes time to learn it

Sounds like you good the auto ND would work better than any other auto exposure function. It doesn't. Also there are various settings to control how it operates, did you experiment with those?

Not enough for sure. But that was definitely rather a side note than a compelling reason as I probably wouldn’t have used it much anyway as I can’t afford the camera messing up on a lot of my doc shoots

I switched from C300 mkII and C200 to FX6 and FX3 a few months ago. Pretty happy about it. The biggest things for me are how lightweight the Sony stuff is and the silent native Sony lenses. OSS (Sony's image stablization) and AF are silent unlike my old Canon EF lenses which were LOUD! This is a big deal for handheld run and gun work when I'm relying on my on-board shotgun mic and when I love using the OSS of the 24-105 f4. That is my preferred way of shooting. Curious though if Canon RF lenses are a lot more quiet than EF?

oh that makes sense! I hardly ever use AF and I rarely shoot in the dark. If I was, the FX6 would have been the one! RF lenses are dead silent. But so is my 16-35 2.8 III actually.

What are your other favorite lenses on the FX6/FX3? I’m thinking of getting the 28-135 servo zoom instead of the 24-105. Heavier, yes. But great to have servo zoom for events. In some cases the added weight could actually be helpful for the added stability. Also have to compare the 24-70 2.8 vs a super zoom? Do I need both? Tough question.

@@moc1911 I have the 16-35 f2.8, 35 f1.4 and 70-200 f4. I like them all. Love how lightweight the 35 and 70-200 are. People don't like the focus breathing on the 35 prime but it hasn't bothered my too terribly much. Not sure about the other two you mentioned. There is a "Clear Image Zoom" feature and rocker bars on both the handle and grip that allow you to basically do "servo-style zooms" without a servo lens. It's kinda cool, though I usually just do slow punch ins in post if need be.

I did use Sony and Canon and came to the same conclusion! The Sony cameras has a sort of sharpness I don’t like, love the “3D” rendering from the Canon cameras! And yes it’s personal but this is my taste, Canon looks more natural alive then flat sharp Sony.

Mainly it's the look of the footage for me, I prefer the look of Canon. The only thing though that makes it tempting is that Sony's equipment just fits together seamlessly and caters to videographers. When you buy Canon, especially the mirrorless DSLRs, you are always making compromises and having to adjust your shooting to the capabilities of the cameras. Sony's cameras just work, and don't get in your way (ie. recording limits) like the Canons do.

Its strange that it doesnt have different 10bit codec options. My a7siii is able to shoot both xavc-i(all intra) and xavc-s(long gop) in 4k50 422 10bit(maybe also in 4k100, i dont remember). I kinda expected fx6 has all the good stuff a7siii has and some extras. The long gop takes a bit more pressure on my 2 years old computer but it saves a lot of space if needed.

I have used both the C70 and the A7S III which has the same sensor as the FX6, and what you said about the dynamic range is true. The C70 has so much more dynamic range especially in the shadows. Unlike any camera I've seen before, from RED to blackmagic to panasonic. None of the cameras have the amount of shadow detail like the C70.

Tried out the FX3 and FX6 and I can replicate most of what you experienced. It is off course a matter of Workflow and what someone is used to as well i guess. @monkepixels I believe that you hit the nail on the head with this. I have shot with both systems and I have noticed that it takes more to get my Sony images to the same place as my Canon, or Panasonic. I know that it is possible but the work I have to put into it is unnecessary, relatively speaking. I really want to like the Sony brand but I just don't. They have the best features, most of the time, but lack in comparison when it comes to work flow, especially photos with people in them, than my other cameras. People are going to think this is sacrilege but do you man. Subjectively, I also agree that photo or video with people in them, you have to go another brand. Sony just doesn't cut it in comparison to all other brands, but this is subjective of course. Take care of yourself and don't let the tolls get you.

If the C70 had a full frame sensor and better build quality it would be brilliant. Then you could take advantage of the RF glass as designed. But canon fo some reason didn't. I have been looking at this camera and can't justify the price over a hybrid. With the booster it is dearer than the R3, which has everything accept NDs

Very interesting review. We shoot on the c70 and fx6 regularly and often cut footage together. I would say they both have strengths and weaknesses depending on the situation. They are both fantastic cameras and you can’t go wrong with either. Side note. Can you link me to the canon conversion luts? Thanks

-SDI, this is not a small thing -using vintage lenses without the need of a speedbooster (wide angles can touch the glass on a speedbooster) -medium format video! (with 645 lenses w/speedbooster) -easier to shoulder mount -the side handle is just so convenient -catalyst browse makes this a great camera to use on a fpv drone setup -the evND and autoexposure using ND filter (you just didn't learn to use it) -the possibility to shoot prores RAW -it becomes easier to use EVF and/or wireless transmission system apart from your monitor (both hdmi and sdi available). Still, I'm trying to make up my mind completely about these two cameras. The possibility to use affordable cine zooms in 4k is very tempting.

FX6 is a very strange (maybe shamefull for it's tier) camera in terms of DR; what is strange is that an FX6 or FX9 that are the higher tier of Sony Cinema cameras have LESS usable dynamic range than an FX3/A7SIII which is a shame for a cinema camera. C70 is the best you can get in that price range but it also has it's downsides like loosing saturation on highlights, only Eletronic stabilization and no EVF. Here's a list of DR of several cameras (from Gerald Undone tests on several videos) Canon C70 - (C-Log 2) - 13 stops A7SIII - HLG 3 (100 ISO) - 13 stops Canon C300 mkII - C-Log2 (ISO800) - 12.8 stops Sony FX9 - S-Log 3 (ISO800) - 11.5 stops Sony FX6 - S-log3 - 11.3 stops Sony A7III - S-Log2 (800ISO) - 11.3 stops Canon R5 - C-Log (ISO400) - 11 stops Canon R6 - Canon Log1 (400 ISO) - 10,5 stops Dynamic range is one of those things that can't be corrected later and gives that professional look, some other characteristics have workarounds.

They might be refering to photo DR due to its RAW capabilities or total DR of vídeo which sometimes means sacrificing image quality. Gerald undone calls it Usable DR.

Great video brother, but oh boy, you've got some heat comin' your way...lol. In my past couple videos I've called out the A7Siii for being "mediocre," and have gotten a LOT of pushback over that (even though I own one too). Dudes just can't accept that a camera they own may not be the best camera out there. It's crazy how tribal people get over this stuff. I shoot RED, Sony, and Blackmagic, and would have no problem shooting Canon either...it's just not the way my system has gone. Cameras are tools, and as you so eloquently pointed out, it needs to make business sense above all else. I don't acknowledge which label a camera has painted on it...to me, it's a hammer, and different hammers are good for driving different nails.

So on paper it wins over pretty much everything canon offers especially with the price tag. But using it, there were so many little things that would've made the switch a lateral move rather than a step up. That's why I didn't buy the camera

Canon has been good to me. I’ve entertained the idea of switching fully to Sony. That decision couldn’t be justified. Like you, I too feel like the images out of Canon are just more pleasing to the eye. Fortunately for us, we’ve been able to build our Canon arsenal of bodies and lenses, so making the switch would be a bit too daunting. Especially since we’ve already done it before by switching from Nikon to Canon. 😂

I think from a ROI perspective it makes sense to stick with Canon.You in there eco system so use it.I’m heavily invested in Sony with my GM lenses,so it’s a no brainer to stick with Sony.Is one better than the other? ehh, Just from the comments alone. Yes everyone is entitled to an opinion. but 95% of you don't have the content to back up your complaints. How much dynamic range do you need to shoot your dog running in the yard LOL no camera is perfect, everyone has their own needs. But i notice the trend of these hobbyist picking apart every detail but ya'll shoot bugs on a flower, some mediocre "dealership" video or some random person in your family staring in the lens. FX6 seems comfortable for handheld, amazing image quality, and the ease of use with internal ND filters and auto focus. At the end of the day, does you footage have a feeling? are you great at your craft? Because these cameras are just tools, that help make the the thought a reality, for yourself or the client.
