Hey hey! In this video, I'm sharing with yall why I chose not to take a research year. Many derm applicants contemplate whether or not they should take a research year and I had many reasons as to why I didn't want to. Here I share my unique journey as to why I didn't choose to do a research year and tips on how to match without one.

I’m so happy you made this video! You gave me this advice 3 years ago (!!) & I’m super happy I didn’t do a research year. 💙 I’m non traditional, which was one piece of it. I liked the research that I did throughout medical school & worked hard to crank out publications, but didn’t love research enough to take a year off + accrue more interest on these loans, lol.

Thanks! 😊In my opinion, it’s connections with leaders in derm who will strongly support your application. When it comes to research you want to focus on high quality /impactful research. I think people believe quantity is better but it’s actually quality projects. I’ll make an upcoming vid discussing this.

When I get to that point I don’t think I will. I am already 35 and hadn’t even started premed yet.

Who chooses what area or topic of study you would research and how involved would medical school be in ensuring you'd get a headstart with skills and knowledge not neccesarily a part of the medical school curriculum?

The student chooses what topic they want to do research in. Medical schools provide organizations and faculty that enable opportunities in leadership and research but it’s ultimately up to the student to take advantage of it.

Hi, I am an IMG from India, right now in my final year of medical school and I have three research projects as first author; I am very much keen on matching into dermatology in USA. I will be giving my usmle steps in 2022 and my US clinical experience in early 2023 and hoping to apply for the match in 2023. Do you think I should do a research year or not ? And are my present research papers of any importance for matching into dermatology in USA?

Hi! Congrats on your accomplishments! It'll be hard to say if you need a research year without knowing the specifics of your application, for example what kind of research you did in the past including the journals your research was published in & what your clinical experience in the US will be like. My biggest tips will be to ensure you get great mentorship from your clinical experience in the States so that they can write you a LOR and if possible try to work on a project when you get here as well.
